Abstract

Blotong as one of the wastes produced by sugar industries up to now has not been processed and managed adequately and so that raise people concern. Actually the waste can be utilized as biocharcoal briquette and be used as alternative fuel. Based on this, the purpose of this research is to know whether various shapes (i.e. spherical, cylindric, and cube) of the blotong briquette has diferent water boiling time and smouldering time by conducting an experiment which was following post test only design. The blotong were taken from Madukismo sugar industry in Tirtonirmolo Bantul. The study results showed that the average time for water boiling observed from the cylindric briquette (454,70 seconds) was the fastest compared with the other two; and the average smouldering time recorded from spherical briquette was the longest (i.e. 1805,30 seconds). Both of the results, when analyzed with one way anova test gained p-value lower than 0,05 which can be interpreted that the time differences between the three shapes were significant. Based on the results, the sugar industry as well as the people living nearby are advised to utilize the blotong. Further study to reveal if fresh and old blotong has different briquette quality is needed to carry on.

Abstract

Schools are educative institution whose function is for building, fostering and improving the qua-lity of human resources. The application of clean and healthy living behavior is very important to maintain the health of school aged children. One example of the application of that behavior is hand washing, nonetheless there are many schools that lack of hand washing facilities. Beside hand washing, hand sanitizer which has two types, i.e. gel and spray, is a material that can be used to reduce hand microbe number. The education on how to use the sanitizer among ele-mentary school students may be through their peer “little doctor”. This study was aimed to know the effect of information dissemination about hand sanitizer by the little doctor towards the de-crease of hand microbe number of SDN Demakijo I students in Gamping, Sleman. The study was an experiment which followed pre test and post test only design. There were 70 respon-dents who were sampled from grade III, IV and V of the school, and then they were divided into two groups so that each type of hand sanitizer had 35 respondents. The paired t-test yielded p values < 0,001 for both types of sanitizer, and therefore it was concluded that the two types significantly capable in reducing the microbe number. Furthermore, the independent t-test yield-ed a p value < 0,,001 which is meant that the microbe reduction between the two types was significantly different. Spray hand sanitizer was more effective because it was able to reduce 89,54 % of the microbe compared with only 69,90 % of the gel type.

Abstract

Restaurants appear and develop in line with consumers needs. Therefore, if they are not sup-ported with good application of sanitation, the existence of restaurants may contribute to health problem such as food poisoning as well as the spread of gastrointestinal disease, for example, diarrhoea. The study was aimed to understand the relationship between the application of sani-tation among restaurants in Depok Beach of Bantul and comsumers’ satisfaction by conducting a cross sectional survey. A hundred visitors of five chosen restaurants in the beach were interview-ed as the respondents. The results showed that three out of the five restaurants had reach the good quality of sanitation and the majority of the respondents (61 %) satisfied with the sanitation condition. The chi-square statistical test revealed that there is a relationship between the applica-tion of sanitation and consumers’ satisfaction (p value < 0,001). Based on the those results, it is advised for the owners of the restaurants which were already healthy to maintain the good condi-tion and for those whose restaurants were not, to make an improvement. For tourism agency and health officers, it is advised as well to do and to up-level a periodical health education which consist of the importance of providing good sanitation and periodical sanitation inspection by should also be scheduled.

Abstract

Working in shift is an alternative for organizing work-load and is created because of the need in maximizing productivity for fulfilling consumers demands. One of the healthy drinking industries which are applying work-shift is PT Air Mancur which s located in Wonogiri. Based on a preli-minary survey conducted in packing division of the company, some complaint related with work fatigue were found among the workers. The study was aimed to know the influence of work-shifts on work fatigue and to know, as well, which shift has the biggest effect, by conducting a cross sectional survey. From 127 workers as the study population, 97 people were selected as the sample, and were randomized proportionally into three different work-shifts. The fatigue was me-asured by reaction timer and the data collected were analysed by using one way anava and LSD test at 95 % level of significance. The results of the study showed that in the morning and after-noon shifts, work fatigue in moderate level were occured in most workers (78,1 % and 93,7 % respectively), meanwhile in the night shift, all workers were experiencing heavy levelled fatigue. The subsequent statistical test confirmed that the difference of fatigue level among the three shifts were significant and the night shift had the biggest influence. Based on the results, the company is advised to give breaktime for workers to have relaxation, to control temperature of work environment, and to provide extra meal for night shift workers. On the other hand, night shift workers were suggested to manage their sleeping time and to spare some times for resting sufficiently.

Abstract

Fly is insect which can play role as vector in the transmission of several diseases. Based on the preliminary survey in a food stall at Depok Beach of Parangtritis, the density of flies was obser-ved 10 per 1 m2 dining table which was categorized as high population and therefore need to be controlled. This study used clove leave oil, a plant-based repellent, for controlling the flies as it contains 80 – 85 % eugenol which gives pungent scent and has function to repel flies. The oil was mixed into liquid wax made from used cooking oil. The research method was an experi-ment which followed pre-test and post-test with control group design. The study was conduc-ted at four food stalls which were selected by using purposive sampling method, because they were the closest to the fresh fish market of the beach. In the first three sampled food stalls, three experimental groups, i.e. three variation of clove oil concentration (10 %, 12 % and 14 %), were applied; meanwhile the fourth food stall was for the two control groups (i.e. solid wax and not-burned clove leaf oil). The fly densities were measured before and after the treatment in each group were carried out and the study was held in 20 days observation with five-day place-ment rotation. The results showed that the average decrease percentage of fly density yielded from the three clove oil concentration, were 47,32 %, 57,18 %, and 69,93 %, respectively. The one way anova statistical test obtained ? value less than 0,001; which means that those per-centages were significant. The post-hoc test with LSD concluded that the most effective con-centration was 14 %, i.e. the mixture of 7 ml clove leaf and 43 ml used cooking oil.

Abstract

In Indonesia, almost 75 % of waste is dominated by organic type that if is not handled properly will cause unpleasant odor and become the breeding sites for bacteria that can potentially inter-fere public health. Jenang Mirah Industry in Josari Village, Jetis, Ponorogo, East Java produces ± 1.2 quintal of organic waste in form of coconut (Cocos nucifera Lin ) pulp that has not been yet treated adequately. The crude fiber content in coconut pulp can be utilized as flour to sub-stitute wheat flour in food making, such as wet noodles. The purpose of this study was to deter-mine the differences of organoleptic test and shelf life among wet noodles produced from four different formulations of coconut pulp flour and wheat flour, by conducting a post-test only with control group designed quasi-experiment. The formulations used were: Formulation I, 300 gr coconut pulp flour and 200 gr wheat flour; Formulation II, 250 gr coconut pulp flour and 250 gr wheat flour; Formulation III, 200 gr coconut pulp flour and 300 gr wheat flour; and Formulation IV or the control, 500 gr wheat flour only. The experiment was using five panelists and the data were statistically analyzed by Kruskall-Wallis test at 5 % level of significance. The results show-ed that Formulation III is the most accepted by consumers (the average score was 3.98 with ra-ting category "favour"). That Formulation also produced wet noodles with the longest shelf life in plastic package, i.e.12 hours.

Abstract

Coliform bacteria is an indicator of fecal water contamination. The number of coliform bacteria in water can cause illness in humans who consume the water. One of the efforts to decrease it is by using disinfectants. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of natu-ral disinfectant made from the mixture of pine-apple peels powder and activated charcoal for decreasing MPN Coliform in water. The study was a pre-experiment with one group pre-test post-test design. There were three variation of the disinfectants, i.e. 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 ratios, in two exposure times, and each was applied to 5 liters of coliform contaminated water, in three replications. The examination of water were conducted in Microbiology Laboratory of Environ-mental Health Department of Yogyakarta Polytechnic of Health. The result of statistical analysis by using paired t-test at ? 0,05 obtained a p value of 0,003; which means that the pre-test and post-test of the MPN Coliform were significantly different. The subsequent results by one way anova test at same ?, for 30 minutes exposure the obtained p-value was 0,249; and for 60 minutes exposure the p-value was 0,724. It means that the post-test examination of MPN Coli-form among the doses and time variations were not signifcantly different. Based on the results it can be concluded that the mixture of pineapple peels powder and activated charcoal as natural disinfectant affects the decrease pf MPN Coliform in water. However, the reduction differences among the three doses and the two exposure times under study were not significant.
