Abstract

 Introduction: Antibacterial effectiveness is the level of an antibacterial agent’s ability in controlling bacteria through growth-inhibiting or killing activities. A natural antibacterial agent that has the potential to be used as an alternative is beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) because it contains phenolic compounds, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and betalains. Antibacterial agents have been widely used as preventive for dental caries in children with the main causative bacteria being Streptococcus mutans. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of beetroot extract against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This study was in vitro experimental laboratory study with a post-test-only control group design. The maceration method used to obtain beetroot extract which will diluted into various concentrations, 12,500 μg/ml, 25,000 μg/ml, 50,000 μg/ml, and 100,000 μg/ml. Antibacterial effectiveness was tested by measuring the inhibition zone using disc diffusion, determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) using broth dilution, and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) using agar dilution with 0,2% chlorhexidine gluconate as the positive control. Analysis of inhibition zone data was performed statistically using one-way ANOVA and Tukey Post Hoc. MIC and MBC tests were analyzed descriptively. Results: The results show all concentrations of beetroot extract were able to form an inhibition zone with the largest mean was 0.40 ± 0.05 mm, but still lower than the positive control. MIC and MBC of extract were 25,000 μg/ml and 50,000 μg/ml respectively. Conclusion: It can be concluded that beetroot extract has antibacterial effectiveness against Streptococcus mutans, therefore it can be used as a natural alternative for dental caries prevention.

Abstract

Bleaching is a dental procedure to repair tooth discoloration by using chemical agents such as 35% hydrogen peroxide. The bleaching agents may cause a side effect, such as a decrease in shear bond strength of composite resin. This can be overcome with the use of antioxidants such as 10% sodium ascorbate which can reduce residual oxygen from the bleaching agents. Antioxidants are also found in a rosella flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rosella flower extract on shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached teeth. A 35% hydrogen peroxide was applied to thirty premolar teeth. The teeth were divided into three groups: group I (without an antioxidant), group II (using 10% sodium ascorbate), and group III (using rosella flower extract); then a composite resin was applied on the teeth surfaces. The shear bond strength was measured by Universal Testing Machine. The data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and post-hoc LSD. The mean of shear bond strength (MPa) for group I was 17.74±1.49, group II was 23.25±1.64, and group III was 19.31±1.01. The results of stastitical tests showed significant differences among the groups (p<0.05). The conclusion of this study is the rosella flower extract increased the shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached teeth, however it showed lower shear bond strength compared to 10% sodium ascorbate.

Abstract

Latar belakang: Produksi limbah cangkang kepiting bakau yang mencapai 75% dari total produksi memiliki kandungan kitin. Kandungan kitin yang ada di dalam cangkang kepiting dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan baku kitosan. Kitosan yang dikombinasikan dengan pengental gelatin dan xanthan gum dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan film periodontal. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan karakteristik film kitosan (Scylla serrata) dengan pengental gelatin dan xanthan gum sebagai media penghantaran obat dalam terapi periodontal. Metode: penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif dengan subjek berupa film dari kitosan (Scylla serrata) dengan pengental gelatin dan xanthan gum. Sampel terdiri dari 1 jenis film kitosan-gelatin dan 1 jenis film kitosan-xanthan gum yang dipotong dengan ukuran sesuai standar alat uji karakteristik film. Hasil: karakteristik film kitosan-xanthan gum lebih baik dan memenuhi standar dalam penilaian karakteristik film periodontal, sehingga disimpulkan bahwa film dari kitosan (Scylla serrata) dengan pengental xanthan gum memiliki nilai karakteristik film yang lebih baik dan memenuhi syarat dibandingkan dengan penggunaan kombinasi bahan kitosan dengan pengental gelatin sebagai sediaan dalam sistem penghantaran obat khususnya untuk terapi periodontal. Abstract

Background: Gingival hyperpigmentation is a physiological pigmentation genetically, appearing with brown to black pigment on the gingiva and oral mucosa which is an aesthetic problem for patients. Purpose: This case report aims to discuss gingival depigmentation procedure using scalpel surgical techniques in patients with gingival hyperpigmentation. Case presentation: A 27-year-old female patient reported brown discoloration on the gums of her upper and lower front teeth which she had noticed ten years ago. Gingival depigmentation using scalpel surgical technique is performed to remove the pigment. Conclusion: Gingival hyperpigmentation is an aesthetic problem that is of concern to patients and requires surgical intervention to remove the pigment, one of them are gingival depigmentation with a scalpel surgery.
