Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement of students' mathematical reasoning abilities by applying the Geogebra-assisted Project Based Learning learning model in class VIII-1 MTs Nurul Islam Indonesia Medan in the 2022/2023 academic year. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII-1 MTs Nurul Islam Indonesia Medan, amounting to 20 people. The data collection techniques used were teacher observation sheets, tests of mathematical reasoning abilities and documentation. This research is a classroom action research (CAR) which consists of 2 cycles, each cycle consists of 2 meetings. Before taking the action, an initial test is given and at the end of each cycle a student's mathematical reasoning ability test is given. The results of the students' mathematical problem reasoning ability test increased from the initial test, cycle I, and cycle II. In the classical initial test, 4 students (20%) completed and the average initial test ability was 56.29 with a very low level of ability category. In the classical first cycle test, 4 students (20%) completed and the average ability test was 57.22 with a very low level of ability category. Then in the second cycle test, classically, 17 students (85%) completed and the average ability was 89.44 with a high level of ability. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the project based learning model assisted by the geogebra application to improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities at MTs Nurul Islam Indonesia Medan.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the presence of mistakes in solving Algebraic Structure problems, particularly on the topic of Ring. The purpose of this research is to analyze the mistakes made in solving Algebraic Structure problems, specifically on the topic of Ring at Universitas Negeri Medan. Mistakes are classified into conceptual errors, data usage errors, language interpretation errors, technical errors, and conclusion errors. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, involving three sixth-semester students of the academic year 2024/2025 with prior knowledge of the Ring topic. Data collection techniques included tests and open questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction and categorization of error types. The results show various errors such as conceptual errors, technical errors, and conclusion errors. This research can serve as a recommendation for educators to be more proactive in assisting students in understanding the material through more effective and engaging teaching methods, as well as providing more in-depth training.

Abstract

This research seeks to create legitimate and practical teaching materials in the form of a module utilizing a realistic mathematics education approach focused on the topic of systems of linear equations in two variables. This study utilizes the research and development (RD) approach, specifically the Thiagarajan 4-D model, which consists of four stages: (1) definition, (2) design, (3) development, and (4) dissemination. We conducted the research at MTsN 1 Central Aceh. Two classes, each with high and moderate abilities, participated in the research. The trial analysis yielded the following findings: (1) Validity, as two experts validated the teaching materials; (2) Practicality, as demonstrated by an average implementation of the learning syntax exceeding 75%, an average student activity exceeding 75%, extremely positive student and teacher responses to the module, and a classification of the developed module as practical. According to the results of the students' learning tests, 15 students completed the requirements out of 19 students in the high-ability class, and 14 students completed the requirements out of 19 students in the medium-ability class. Consequently, we categorize the percentage of students who have met the requirements as excellent. The module created utilizing a realistic mathematics education technique for the topic of systems of linear equations in two variables for eighth grade is deemed viable, indicating it is both valid and practical.

Abstract

One strategy to improve students' mathematical competence in education is to train them to use High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS)-type questions. HOTS is an expertise in the process of critical, reflective, metacognitive, logistical, and creative thinking possessed by students. Mistakes made by students in working on High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) type math problems need to be analyzed; one that can be used is the Newman analysis procedure error. Therefore, this study aims to analyze students' errors in solving HOTS problems using the Newman procedure. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of the study were 59 students of SMA Negeri 7 Medan, class XI IPA. The researcher selected 6 students, comprising 2 high-category students, 2 medium-category students, and 2 low-category students. The data collection techniques used by the researcher were essay tests, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study obtained 4 types of errors, namely errors in understanding the problem (comprehension) made by students of 79.10%; transformation errors (transformation) made by students of 43.37%; process skill errors (process skill) made by students of 24.29%; and errors in writing the final answer (endcoding) made by students of 74.01%. Therefore, the most common errors made by students are errors in understanding the problem (comprehension), made by 79.10% of students. This study is expected to be useful for teachers to provide information about the location of student errors in working on HOTS-type math problems.
