Abstract

Higher education institutions conduct strategic planning to attain their goals and enhance their operations. Aiming for improved institutional efficiency, the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) conducted SWOT analysis to help establish an effective strategic plan. This quantitative-descriptive study, contributes to the understanding of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) affecting the operations of PMMA as a maritime higher education institution. Using a Likert Scale survey questionnaire, the data gathered from 767 respondents revealed that deliberate changes must be made to facilitate institutional growth. The PMMA’s strengths showed that the academy is meeting its objectives and its weaknesses are primarily process driven issues that need attention. The academy’s opportunities are external essentials that provide better chances and options for midshipmen to progress through their academic and training experiences. Most of the respondents agreed that the Academy has threats related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other future health crisis. To face many challenges brought by the globalization and the pandemic, PMMA has to develop a strategic approach based on the SWOT Analysis leading to improved efficiency. This initiative is meant to institutionalize SWOT analysis at the PMMA and encourage the practice of SWOT analysis in other higher education sectors.

Abstract

Meaning relations are semantic connections or connections between words, phrases, or concepts that appear in a text. The aim of this research is to describe the types of meaning relaxation in the novel Harga a Confidence by Tere Liye and to integrate it into semantic learning in higher education. This research uses a descriptive method. The data for this research are quotations from sentences in the novel Harga a Confidence by Tere Liye which contain meaning relationships, documentation and interviews. The research procedure uses six steps. The data analysis technique uses six analysis steps. The conclusions of this research are 1) Tere Liye's novel Harga a Confidence found the types of meaning relations of epizeuksis repetition, synonyms, antonyms, equivalence (equivalence of words), and collocations (comparison of words), and 2) forms of integration in semantic learning in higher education can be carried out through 9 steps, namely (1) Identifying the Concept of Meaning Relations, (2) Preparing Learning Modules, (3) Linking it to Semantic Concepts in General, (4) Introduction to Case Studies, (5) Active Learning, (6) Text Analysis Tasks, (7) Reflective Discussion, (8) Presentation of Results, (9) Evaluation.

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the extension services in terms of community needs specifically economic, health, socio-cultural, and environmental needs of Sitio Aldea, Barangay Natividad in San Narciso, Zambales. The findings were used as basis in formulating a community extension program towards community development. The needs assessment, conducted by Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), through its Department of Research, Development and Extension (DRDE), is important in identifying extension services that can effectively meet the priority needs of selected barangays in Zambales, which in this case, 3 barangays are selected dividing the research into three phases, and this is phase 1. This descriptive study used a survey questionnaire which consists of parts identifying the demographic profiles, economic, health, socio-cultural, and environmental-related needs of the community. The data gathered from 559 respondents revealed that Sitio Aldea is ‘highly in need’ of environmental, health and socio-cultural aspects and it is only in ‘need’ of economic aspects. Given these, an implementable community extension program and activities has been proposed. Its implementation is recommended, as well as an in-depth study on specific findings such as unemployment, education, and source of income. Finally, the replication of the study, to be conducted in another barangay for phase 2, is advocated.
