Abstract

One of the teachings and the difference between philosophy and other sciences is the importance of rational and objective thinking. The implication of this teaching is the birth of an open-minded, inclusive view and acceptance o the truth from wherever it comes, including from different religions and cultures. Openness and acceptance of differences are the indicators of religious moderation. Therefore, there is an inherent relationship between openness and religious moderation. Without an inclusive view, there is no religious moderation. Likewise, a person's inclusive and moderate view will be present only if he thinks rationally and objectively. This article aims to analyze the meaning of religious moderation from the perspective of Muslim philosophers and its implementation in history, either in the global or Indonesian context. This research answers and seeks an alternate solution to the problem of extremism and radicalism in the name of religion. The method used is philosophical and historical-hermeneutic. In addition to library data, the research sources also use field data obtained through observation and interviews with students, alumni, and lecturers of Aqidah and Islamic Philosophy (AFI) in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to prove that Islamic philosophy can present alternatives to overcome intolerance, radicalism, and extremism in Indonesia. This suggests that the teaching of Islamic philosophy in the country has succeeded in changing student perspective and mindset which tends to be closed-minded, exclusive, and extreme in nature in seeing differences in religions, sects, and beliefs to be open-minded, inclusive and moderate. With rational, critical and comprehensive teachings, students and alumni from the Islamic Theology and Philosophy (ITP) study programs have a more positive attitude in understanding plurality and diversity. Such change in mindset and attitude results from a curriculum design which offers moderate values, critical-dialectical teaching methods, and direct experiences in diversity. This study uses field research with qualitative technique and applies purposive sampling with snowballing technique to decide the study subjects. To collect the primary data, the data collecting-instruments include in-depth interviews with 28 resource persons comprising of lecturers, students and alumni in 5 ITP study programs in Indonesia, field observation and literature.

Abstract

This article explains and analyzes the position and function of the soul for humans and its relationship to the Supreme Being in Ibn Sina’s interpretation of the Qur’an, Q.S. al-Nur [24:35]. According to Ibn Sina, the soul is the same as light, nur, and non-physical being that becomes a source of knowledge, enlightenment, and truth. The method used by Ibn Sina in interpreting this verse, Q.S. al-Nur [24:35], can be classified into rational or manhaj al-ijtihad al-’aqli. Meanwhile, the scope of the study focuses on the existence, potential, and actualization of the human soul, which originates in the Universal Being, Allah SWT. The analysis concludes that Ibn Sina’s rational-psychological interpretation is the first in the history of tafsir. This conclusion also responds to the accusation that Ibn Sina’s interpretation is misleading, distancing Muslims from the Islamic creed. This qualitative library research applied a rational and historical approach and analysis.

Abstract

Abstract

This research is motivated by the weakness of the existing self-transformation methods. Whereas self-transformation is part of management science which is very important in helping companies and knowing the process of change in humans. Even so, the presence of various methods of self-transformation is still felt to be a weakness—especially the need for external influence from the self. In fact, self-transformation should also be driven by awareness in humans. By using descriptive qualitative analysis method, it is found that self-transformation can be seen from the point of view of Ibnu Sīnā 's philosophy of the soul which directs the soul to be completely transformed. Although there is no explicit discussion of Ibnu Sīnā 's theory of self-transformation, Ibnu Sīnā 's formulation of self-transformation theory is better than Aristotle's implicitly and provides an alternative method of self-transformation.
