Abstract

Discussions on moving the State Capital (IKN) in early 2019 became one of the hot topics in the country and media attention in Indonesia. Framing is the framing of information used by a media. The selection of the news portals Republika.co.id and Kompas.com is not without reason. kompas.com occupies the 9th position and Republika.co.id occupies the 34th position, included in the category of the top 50 sites in Indonesia. This research intends to identify the framing of national mass media coverage of the decision to move the State Capital (IKN) to Kalimantan. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research, using the Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki framing analysis model which has four analytical tools, namely syntax, script, thematic, and rhetorical. Data collection techniques in this research use techniques through primary data and secondary data. This research was conducted through observing online news texts on the media Republika.co.id and kompas.com by selecting 5 stories in each media for the period March to April 2022. Based on the data that has been found from 5 news stories in both media, there are each one news that does not meet the elements of completeness of the news. The comparison of framing in the information that sticks out by Republika.co.id and kompas.com is most often seen in the way the facts are presented and the selection of sources. The results of this study show that Republika.co.id constructs more of a government figure in following up on issues in the process of transferring IKN.

Abstract

Blasphemy is a significant and sensitive topic in the news, prompting mass media to allocate coverage to religious issues. This study utilizes qualitative methods, employing the framing model analysis of William A. Gamson and Andre Modigliani. The objective is to examine news concerning alleged blasphemy cases involving Panji Gumilang, the head of Al-Zaytun ponpes, as reported by Republika and Detik during the period from July to August 2023. Researchers scrutinized six news articles, three from Republika and three from Detik. The findings reveal that both Republika and Detik distinctly highlight ongoing investigations by law authorities into the blasphemy case attributed to Panji Gumilang. Republika's coverage primarily focuses on evidence exploration to gather information, reinforcing the report on the alleged blasphemy case for a smoother legal process and justice. In contrast, Detik examines the societal influence and impact of the blasphemy case. Meanwhile, Detik discussed the influence and impact of this blasphemy case on society. The reason for choosing the two media is because both have different backgrounds, Republika is a media born from the Muslim community that is more in-depth in news related to Islamic religious issues while Detik is a popular media whose reporting is neutral.

The spread of false information or hoaxes on social media has become a serious issue, disrupting public trust and causing confusion. In an era where information is often questioned and twisted, the post-truth phenomenon has become increasingly prominent. This study aims to analyze comment interactions on the Instagram account @turnbackhoaxid within the context of post-truth, focusing on emotions and personal beliefs regarding netizens' responses to information verification. The research employs a netnographic approach and qualitative descriptive methods, with data collected from comments on several hoax clarification posts uploaded by @turnbackhoaxid. The analysis reveals that comment interactions are significantly influenced by users' emotions and personal beliefs. Findings include various patterns such as supportive comments, sarcasm, emotional responses, and accusations against @turnbackhoaxid. These interactions often reflect the echo chamber phenomenon, where individuals are more likely to seek information that reinforces their own beliefs. This study underscores the importance of digital literacy in combating hoaxes and misinformasi. The results indicate that although interactions are predominantly supportive of the provided clarifications, skepticism, distrust, and information manipulation still color the comment interactions. Therefore, this research suggests the need for more effective educational strategies to enhance individuals' ability to critically assess information in the face of challenges in the post-truth era.

Abstract

Abstract

Bengkulu is an area that is prone to natural disasters in terms of its geographical condition. In addition, Bengkulu is currently facing non-natural disasters, one of which is the global COVID-19 pandemic. In dealing with disasters, it is necessary to have effective communication from the government to the community. With the current social restrictions, the use of media is one of the important things in communication. This study aims to analyze the communication carried out by the Bengkulu's Regional Disaster Relief Agency in an effort to provide disaster information and education to the community. In the study of Agenda Setting, the media has ability to show audiences the things that are important for them to pay attention. This study observes and analyzes the content shared by the Bengkulu's Regional Disaster Relief Agency on its social media pages (Facebook and Instagram). The research findings that the content displayed on the agency's social media is generally the form of reporting. The information shared is information when a disaster occurs, such as the magnitude of the earthquake and the number of COVID-19 cases. This information is not followed by pre- and post-disaster information. The content produced also does not open up space for interactivity to the audience. Other content is in the form of ceremonial activities. This shows that the Bengkulu's Regional Disaster Relief Agency has not made disaster education efforts through social media. The media agenda that is prepared only aims to show the performance of the agency to the public. Keywords: Bengkulu, Disasters Communication, Information and Education, Social Media

Abstract

Taylor Swift’s song “Seven” recounts the childhood of a seven-year-old who watches a friend live in fear under a father figure’s abusive parenting. This study examines six lyrical units from the song using Roland Barthes’s semiotics to trace the child’s response to the abuse witnessed. A qualitative desk study drew primary data from close textual observation of the lyrics and secondary data from dictionaries and family-psychology literature. Commutation test isolated six analysis units, five from the bridge and one from the chorus. Denotative and connotative readings show that the first three lines mark the friend’s house losing its function as a safe communication space, through a haunted house, the father’s persistent anger, and a secret promise that closes the communication channel with adults. The next three lines show the narrator taking over a protective role through an invitation to live together, a fantasy of becoming pirates, and a promise to protect the friend from crying and hiding. Tracing the myths behind these six meanings reveals long-standing narratives about parents frightening children with the word “ghost,” a father’s authority under patriarchal culture, popular narratives of children building their own refuge outside the home, pirates as a symbol of freedom, and true friendship as an unconditional protector. These myths make “Seven” easy to recognize across cultures and languages, including for Indonesian listeners. The findings show the child playing an active role in constructing meaning and seeking protection through peer bonds when the family fails to serve as its first safe space.
