Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Javanese teenagers of Desa Pamuktaran preserve. It uses qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to desescribe what language maintenance do the Javanese people of Desa Pamuktaran preserve. The subjects were 15 participants of the third generations that have selected as the source of data in this study. The use of instruments in this study were observation,interview and documentation. The observation were used desescribe what language maintenance do the Javanese people of Desa Pamuktaran preserve. The interview was used in depth data. The theories of Fasold, Fishman and Holmes are used in this study. The data were analyzed Miles and Huberman and Saldana’s technique. The data from questionnaire will be analyzed by using the following steps; (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) verification and drawing conclusion. There are four types of language maintenance of Javanese language in Desa Pamuktaran they are low maintenance, medium maintenance, strong maintenance and extreme maintenance.Keywords: Language Maintenance, Javanese, Teenagers, Javanese Language

Abstract

In today’s world, shopping on Instagram is quickly becoming the preferred way for consumers to not only learn about new brands and products on Instagram, but also purchase them in just a few simple steps.One of the top issues of online shopping is its security concerns.Online shopping fraud is one of a cybercrime which often occurs lately.  Fraudsters usually manipulate their victims through their language used. In order to manipulate their victim, a fraud should be able to use the speech function or linguistic function in the proper context of conversation to build trust of their victim. This study was aimed at investigating the speech function used by online shopping frauds on Instagram. This research was conducted in a qualitative research. The data were clauses consist of speech functions used by online shopping frauds on instagram. Five chats of online shopping fraudsters with their victims taken from Indonesia Online Shop Blacklist has taken as data sources by using purposive sampling. In order to identify the types of speech functions used by the fraudster, Halliday’s theory of Interpersonal Function was used. The findings showed that the types of speech functions found used by online shopping frauds in instagram are statement, question, command, and minor.  In which statement is more often used by fraudster in instagram, followed by command, question and minor. It indicates that the fraudster use statement for giving information about the product which they sell, they also tend to use statement to answer the questions from the consumer about their product, delivery process, payment method, etc.Keywords: Speech Functions, Fraudster, Instagram, Online Shopping, Discourse

Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the cognitive process manner of different gender in writing argumentative text. The population of this study was grade XII of Free Methodist Senior High School Medan in 2019/2020 academic years and the sample was three males and three females. The sample was taken by snowball technique. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design of which data were the transcript of think aloud protocol and retrospective interview. In analyzing the data, this research used model of Miles and Huberman, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification. Based on the data analysis was found that male and female had difference manners in writing argumentative text. The male students generated the ideas by brainstorming, and then they outlined the thinking ideas orderly as a guide in writing. In the translating process, they tended to transform the ideas based on the generic structure of argumentative text referred to the outlines which were made before. In the process of writing they did reading and editing words and sentences have been arranged well. In the end of their writing, they tended to read their writing result to make sure. While the female students had different way with male students where in the planning process, they generated the ideas by brainstorming then, they developed the points by outlining the ideas and the ideas were improved the quality by reading and revising the ideas. In the translating process, they tended to develop their writing by structuring it based on the argumentative generic structure without reading and editing because they tended to write it fluently. In reviewing, they did reading the text to check all words and sentences. In addition, they revised the error words and sentences which were found.Keywords: Cognitive Process, Different Gender, Writing, Argumentative Text

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to help teachers to enrich their knowledge about Letterland strategies in teaching English vocabulary to young learners. The objective of this research was to investigate the types of problem faced by teachers while using Letterland strategies. This research applied descriptive qualitative design and the data gathered from the sentences of four teachers in Nursery class at a Singapore Pre-School, Medan. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. Then, the techniques in analyzing the data were condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were two types of problem faced by all the teachers; an internal disturbance (54.55%),  and an external disturbance (45.45%). It was concluded that Letterland strategies were good for young learners in learning English vocabulary because it provided some fun activities that contained of multi-sensory based learning which they were able to see, hear, do, and touch it.         Keywords: English Vocabulary; Letterland Strategies; Young Learners

Abstract

This study investigates the types of grammatical errors produced by Arabic learners in English. Bilingual program is a condition that the students speak both English and Arabic languages in their daily communication. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research in conducting this study. The data are bilingual students’ utterances consisting of grammatical errors in daily communication. The utterances consisted of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. The prior aim in this research is to describe the types of grammatical errors since there are two kinds of grammatical errors namely morphological errors and syntactical errors.Keywords: Grammatical Error, Bilingualism, English, Arabic language, Speech
