Abstract

This study examined how students’ scientific writing skills changed over as they participated in the Reading Project Based Learning (RPjBL) model. This action research was conducted by Biology Teacher of Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in SebelasMaret University. The results show that the scientificwriting level increased on the last writing activities. It was suggested that RPjBL could have a positive impact on students’ scientific writing. Students who experienced the RPjBL emphasized the sentences reflecting the application and used high cognitive level sentences.

Abstract

This research was aimed to improve the students’ argumentation skill in X MIA 1 SMA Batik 2 Surakarta Academic Year 2014/2015 through the implementation of problem based learning. This research is a classroom action research which consisted of three cycles. Each cycle contained planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this research were students in X MIA 1 of SMA  Batik 2 Surakarta Academic Year 2014/2015. The data was collected using test, interview, and documentation. The data validation used triangulation technic. The data were analyzed descriptive was based on three components, they are: data reduction, data presentation and drawing the conclusion or verification. The research procedure is using spiral method. The results showed that argumentation skill of students increase from pre cycle, cycle I, cycle II, and cycle III. The average of students’ argumentation skill increase from 28,96% to 50,06%. Claim aspect increase from 61,62% to 82,49%; evidence aspect increase from 15,66% to 37,37%; and reasoning aspect increase from 9,60% to 30,30%. Based on the result of the research, the conclusion is there are improvement of argumentation skill through implementation of problem based learning in X MIA 1 SMA Batik 2 Surakarta.

Abstract

This study aims to design a Scientific Reading-based Inquiry (SRbI) model that supports argumentation skills development. The assessment of these skills refers to the Toulmin Argument Pattern (TAP), and the participants were Biology Education students in a state university. Furthermore, the Design-based Research (DBR) approach was adopted by combining exploratory studies, trials, and case studies as part of an iterative process. The intervention was formed based on design principles derived from literature review and findings from exploratory studies. Also, observations were made during the trial and intervention process. Data in assessments and observations of written and oral arguments were collected and descriptively analyzed. The study, in three iterations, produced a framework as the basis for the SRbI learning model, with five phases: Reading Orientation, Recapturing, Processing, Communicating, and Reviewing. Therefore, the application of this learning model had a significant impact on the development of students’ argumentation skills.
