Abstract

The Santol fruit (Sandoricum koetjape Burm. f. Merr.) is one of the most important fruit trees in Meliaceae. It possesses seeds with sticky white aril that cannot be stored for a long term because of its characteristic as recalcitrant seeds. The aim of this research was to study the storage period of the santol seeds in the room temperature. Measurements were conducted on seed characteristics such as weight, length, seed thickness, water content, seed viability, and germination rate. The result shows that santol seed can be stored maximum for 40 days. Between 30-40 days the seed can still germinate but the seedling is in normal strong and normal weak category. Based on water content measurement and viability observation, santol seed can be grouped as recalcitrant.

Abstract

A study on seed germination of Kedawung was conducted in the Bogor Botanic Garden using seeds collected from living plant collection of the Purwodadi Botanic Garden. The purpose of the study was to reveal dormancy characteristics of the seed and to search for the effective method of enhancing seed germination of the species. Overall, seventeen treatments of scarification and application of chemical stimulants were tested. The result showed that scarification treatment is critical for promoting Kedawung seed germination. Nicking of the seed testa provided the best result with 80 % seed germination. Soaking the seeds in boiling water also helped the seed to germinate up to 62 %, especially when the time of soaking was appropriate. Meanwhile, the effect of chemical stimulants, i.e. KNO3 and GA3, was evident only if the application was preceded by a scarification treatment. Seed germination was enhanced with the application of either 500 ppm KNO3 or 1500 ppm GA3. These results suggest that the majority of kedawung seeds have physical dormancy (PY), but some may also have physiological dormancy (PD), and only a very little portion of them are evidently non-dormant seeds.

Abstract

Buah avokad mempunyai kandungan nutrisi yang sangat baik bagi masyarakat khususnya kandungan lemak tidak jenuh dan protein yang tertinggi bila dibandingkan jenis buah lain. Untuk tujuan komersial, tanaman avokad perlu diperbanyak secara vegetatif untuk memperoleh bibit yang telah terbukti kualitas dan kuantitas tinggi, serta berbuah lebih awal. Keberhasilan penyambungan sangat dipengaruhi oleh kesegaran entres. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keberhasilan dan pertumbuhan sambungan tanaman avokad dengan menggunakan entres yang disimpan dalam pelepah batang pisang selama dua hingga sembilan hari. Parameter pengamatan meliputi persentase tingkat hidup sambungan, pertumbuhan panjang, jumlah daun, jumlah cabang, dan panjang percabangan batang atas setiap bulan sampai enam bulan. Data pertumbuhan dianalisis secara statistik dengan ANOVA dan uji lanjut Duncan. Lama penyimpanan entres berpengaruh terhadap tingkat hidup hasil sambungan dan pertumbuhan batang atas avokad. Rerata tingkat hidup bibit sambungan avokad terus menurun dari 99,5% pada umur satu bulan sampai 71% pada umur enam bulan setelah penyambungan, tetapi tidak mengalami penurunan setelah lima bulan penyambungan. Penyimpanan entres avokad dalam pelepah pisang dapat dipertahankan kesegarannya selama sembilan hari, yaitu tingkat hidup sambungan 60% - 84% enam bulan setelah penyambungan. Ada kecenderungan bahwa makin lama penyimpanan entres, makin menurun pertumbuhan batang atas avokad; sebaliknya makin lama umur penyambungan, makin meningkat pertumbuhan batang atas avokad, kecuali jumlah cabangnya yang relatif tidak meningkat setelah dua bulan penyambungan.

Abstract

Karst ecosystem in Bogor is currently threatened by mining activities. Restoration of the disturbed karst areas is urgently required. Seed banks are considered as an important potential seed sources for restoration. This study was conducted to quantify the composition and species diversity of the aboveground vegetation and the seed bank. The study determined the correspondence between the seed bank with the aboveground vegetation in relation with ecosystem restoration. Twenty 6 m × 6 m vegetation plots were established. A total of sixty soil samples were taken from the study sites. The seed bank was studied using germination experiment. All plant species in the vegetation plots and seedlings growing from all soil samples were identified and the number was counted to determine the composition, index of diversity, and index of similarity. There were 80 species from 41 families found in the seed bank in Mt. Nyungcung, dominated by Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae), whereas 50 species from 29 families found in Mt. Kapur with Cecropia peltata (Urticaceae) dominated the site. Diversity index of Mt. Nyungcung and Mt. Kapur seed banks were 2.09 ± 0.21 and 1.78 ± 0.47 respectively. The similarity index between seed bank and the aboveground vegetation in the two study sites were 32.86% and 27.66% respectively. Mt. Nyungcung seed bank was more diverse than Mt. Kapur. The similarity between the seed bank with the aboveground vegetation in the two study sites were low. Further assessment is needed to determine the role of the seed bank of Mt. Nyungcung and Mt. Kapur in the restoration of the ecosystems.
