Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan menulis esei mahasiswa kelas A semester 4 di mata kuliah Essay Writing  di program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto tahun akademik 2013-2014 melalui Peer Review. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan pada bulan April hingga Agustus 2014 dalam dua siklus yang tiap siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, tindakan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes (pre tes, pos tes 1, dan pos tes 2), observasi, dan angket dianalisa secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif.  Setelah data dianalisa, hasil penghitungan diketahui adanya peningkatan 28% dari nilai rata-rata pre tes yang sebanyak 59 dan nilai rata-rata pos tes ke 2 yang sebanyak 76 sehingga indikator keberhasilan penelitian yang berupa peningkatan sebanyak 20% telah tercapai. Hasil tersebut juga didukung oleh hasil angket yang diketahui bahwa 65% mahasiswa memberikan respon setuju  dan 34% berpendapat sangat setuju terhadap kelebihan dari penerapan strategi Peer Review selama proses pembelajaran. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi peer review mampu meningkatkan kemampuan menulis esei mahasiswa. Kata kunci: Peer Review, kemampuan menulis, menulis esei

Abstract

Learning needs a medium to help learners learning. The medium can provide the learners sources of knowledge and practice. Learning English essay writing subject required its learners to understand and to have essay writing skills of English as a foreign language. The essay writing is a subject conducted by English Education Department, Faculty of teacher training and education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, in Central Java province in Indonesia for preparing its learners to academic writing in the next semester. Blog which can be a learning medium for learning English Essay writing was necessary to be developed for fulfilling the learners’ need. Conducting a research and development was chosen to develop the blog. This study involved 21 students in the fourth semester who took the English essay writing subject. This study took eight months from March to October 2016 in two academic years 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. Questionnaire was used to investigate students’ need on learning media; to know feedback on blog’s content, structure and navigation, and visual design from experts and students; and to find out students’ perception toward the blog developed. Documentation was also used to describe the processes of developing the blog in this research. The results showed that the blog was successfully developed regarding to the learners’ necessity for learning the subject and to the procedure passed in this research. Moreover, the blog was perceived positively (100%) to help the learners to learn the subject of English essay writing.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the effectiveness of peer review for teaching English sentence writing skill to university students in Central Java, Indonesia. An experimental group was treated by implementing peer review, but a control group was not treated. For collecting the data, both groups were given test: pre test and post test. After analyzing using t-test formula, the result showed that t-value (2,890) was higher than t-table (2,048). Therefore, peer review was effective for teaching English sentence writing skill. Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the writing strategy of the second semester students of University Muhammadiyah of Purwokerto in the academic year 2015/2016. The method was qualitative descriptive. There were 57 students of the second semester  students as the subject of the research. However, the data collection was collected through questionaire. The result was likely about the percentage from the questionaire. In preparation step, 49% respondents admitted that they use cognitive strategy, they looked for the information they wanted to write and also collected some vocabularies before writing. In the second item, there were 60% respondents who have social strategy. Therefore, if they have problem in their writing, they will ask their friends. Cognitive strategy is also used by 67% respondents, it happened when the students said that grammar was the part from their writing in which it was the most often to be corrected. Moreover, cognitive strategy again was used by 84% and 54% when they did not know about grammar and word from their writing, they would open grammar book and dictionary. The last, there were 46% respondents had cognitive and social strategy, that was about to use internet or social media as the additional source outside class.    Keywords: writing strategy, cognitive, metacognitive, social

Abstract

Abstrak: Pengabdian bagi masyarakat ini mengambil topik “Pengenalan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK).” Pelatihan tersebut diperuntukan bagi Guru-Guru Sekolah SMP Muhammadiyah Rawalo, Kabupaten Banyumas, Provinsi Jawa Tengah, Indonesia yang berjumlah 18 orang. Kegiatan tersebut dilakukan pada hari Senin,7 Januari 2019. Selama kegiatan pelatihan ini, para guru diberi bekal pengetahuan tentang metodologi penelitian secara umum, metode penelitian jenis PTK, dan alasan yang melatarbelakangi perlunya dilaksanakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Melalui kegiatan-kegiatan tersebut, diharapkan adanya peningkatan kesadaran dan motivasi untuk melakukan penelitian PTK, pengembangan kualitas pembelajaran, dan adanya peningkatan pemahaman tentang PTK. Kata Kunci: landasan penelitian, metodologi penelitian, PTK Abstract: This community service took a topic “Introducing classroom action research (CAR).” This training was for eighteen (18) secondary school teachers of Sekolah Menengah Pertama Muhammadiyah Rawalo in Banyumas district, Jawa Tengah province, Indonesia. The community service was conducted on Monday, 7th of January 2019. During the activity of this community service, the teachers were given the knowledge of research methodology, CAR, and the foundation of doing CAR. After conducting this service, the teachers hopefully have the awareness and motivation to do CAR, the awareness of improving learning quality, and the comprehension improvement of CAR.
