Abstract

This research examines navigating polygamous family dynamics: family communication and mindset in an Islamic context using a mixed methods explanatory model. Quantitative data from respondents to measure the correlation and influence of family communication, family structure, and religious orientation on the resilience of polygamous families. In contrast, qualitative data from informants were used to analyze navigating polygamous family dynamics: family communication and mindset in an Islamic context which includes communication in building family meaning, relationship maintenance, and problem-solving in polygamous families. The results showed that the resilience of polygamous families can be maintained if family communication, family structure, and religious orientation used are in line with or well accepted by all family members. The calculated F value of 51.331> the F table value of 2.73 and the sig value is 0.01 <0.05 then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, meaning that the variables of Family Communication (X1), Family structure (X2), and Religious orientation (X3) affect family resilience (Y). Islamic Da'wah, when applied correctly and contextually, can play an important role in strengthening the resilience of polygamous families by improving effective communication and using the right Islamic mindset.

Abstract

Rapid advances in digital technology have led to a significant increase in the intensity of online gaming among children, particularly at the elementary school level. This study aims to examine the psychological impact of online gaming addiction on children in Sidorame Timur Village, Medan Perjuangan District, North Sumatra Province, identify the contributing factors, and explore the response patterns exhibited by parents. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving in-depth interviews and direct observations of eight children aged 11–12 years who exhibit symptoms of online game addiction, along with their parents. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic approach. Findings indicate that online game addiction has negative effects on children's psychological well-being, such as learning concentration disorders, anxiety, sleep dysfunction, and reduced social interaction. Key factors contributing to addiction include poor communication between parents and children, the diversity of evolving game types, and peer social pressure. In response to this situation, some parents have begun to adopt open communication patterns, establish more structured schedules, conduct active supervision, and encourage their children to participate in social and physical activities. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening digital parenting capacity at the family level as a preventive measure against online game addiction. These findings provide practical contributions to the development of digital literacy-based education policies and community-based intervention programs. The uniqueness of this study lies in its in-depth exploration of addictive behavior and parenting strategies in a local context, offering contextual insights into the study of child psychology and education in the digital age.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) in North Sumatran society, particularly among Generation Z, in relation to self-esteem and social media usage. The research employs a quantitative approach with a correlational survey design, involving a sample of 150 respondents aged 12-24 years from various regions in North Sumatra who are active users of social media platforms. The study utilizes three main questionnaires: FOMO scale, social media addiction scale, and self-esteem scale. Multiple regression analysis is used to determine the involvement of each independent variable (self-esteem and social media usage) in the dependent variable (FOMO). The results reveal that both self-esteem and social media usage have a significant positive influence on FOMO. Interestingly, higher self-esteem is found to be associated with increased FOMO, suggesting that self-esteem in this context may be contingent on social validation and can strengthen the desire for digital existence. The high use of social media platforms also reinforces a sense of connectedness and a desire to socialize, which, if unfulfilled, can lead to anxiety due to the fear of being left behind. The study highlights the importance of understanding the quality of self-esteem in the current cultural and digital context and the need for digital literacy based on Islamic values to promote critical awareness of social expectations manipulated in digital spaces. The findings have practical implications for creating strategies to improve the identity and psychological resilience of young people amidst the digital culture in North Sumatra.
