Abstract

Though blended learning has been applied in nursing schools in Indonesia, the number of studies with regards to students’ motivation and self-readiness in their courses is still lacking. In addition, many student nurses claimed that the Research and Statistics course was more difficult than other nursing courses. This study aimed to assess the nursing students’ motivation and self-learning readiness of blended learning in a Research and Statistics course of the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Pelita Harapan. The preliminary study recruited forty nursing students for validity and reliability test purposes. Two questionnaires were translated and tested including the adapted Academic Motivation Scale and the adapted Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale for Nursing Education. Both Cronbach’s alphas of the questionnaires were above 0.8 (good reliability), however some questions were revised based on its validity test results and its readability. A total of 181 students were involved in the study and descriptive statistics were applied in the data analysis. The findings showed that nursing students had relatively moderate self-directed learning readiness (mean 90.18). With regards to academic motivation, students’ intrinsic motivation to know (mean 3.35) was higher than in other subdimensions of academic motivation. It also means that most of the students felt happy while learning and exploring something new in the course. In conclusion, motivation and self-learning readiness of students are important when applied to a blended course. It is recommended that nurse educators should identify students’ motivation and self-learning readiness to provide student-centered learning especially in a Research and Statistics course.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the number one cause of death for women. Many women realize they have breast cancer after being in the final stage, as experienced by two church members who are currently undergoing breast cancer treatment. The interview results revealed that some church members had a family history of breast cancer, underscoring the importance of implementing prevention education and breast self-examination within the church. One of the causes of breast cancer is an unhealthy lifestyle, a lack of awareness, a lack of information, and the feeling that they are fine. No family history of the disease makes women too lazy to do breast self-exam. This activity was carried out in March 2024 with the target of women aged 15-55 years totaling 33 people. This activity is in the form of providing education on healthy lifestyles and how to prevent them by doing breast self-exam. At the beginning and end of the activity, participants were given a pretest and posttest to measure their level of knowledge, then continued with a demonstration and redemonstration of breast self-exam practice. The results of the pretest were 66.1% and the posttest was 79.5%, where there was an increase in knowledge about healthy lifestyles and breast self-exam. This increase is expected to be followed by the routine implementation of breast self-exam practices every month, correctly and appropriately, so that the mortality rate of women due to breast cancer can decrease.

Abstract

Abstract

Burnout syndrome is a serious occupational health problem among hospital healthcare workers and affects the quality of healthcare services. This study aimed to identify and analyze factors influencing burnout syndrome among healthcare workers in hospitals through a systematic review. The research method followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines with literature searches on PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest databases. Of the 755 articles identified, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Results showed burnout prevalence ranging from 15.1% to 62%, with emotional exhaustion as the dominant component. Factors influencing burnout were categorized into five groups: (1) workload and shift work, with high workload and night shifts increasing burnout risk; (2) social support and good interpersonal relationships functioning as protective factors; (3) job satisfaction and adequate rewards reducing burnout risk; (4) demographic and personal factors such as age, gender, education, and lifestyle; (5) organizational factors including value conflicts, workplace violence, and resource constraints. Comprehensive multi-level interventions encompassing individual, interpersonal, and organizational strategies are needed to prevent and address burnout among healthcare workers in hospitals. Keywords: burnout syndrome, healthcare workers, hospital, risk factors
