Abstract

This research aims at exploring the dynamics of Islamic politics during Suharto’s New Order Regime, particularly when the regime simplifies political parties into merely three parties. This political shift, then, caused Muslim figures in Palembang, who were initially involved in Islamic political parties, to move their political vehicles and began to take a role in the management of Golkar party in one side, andremained consistent with the struggle of Islamic political parties in another side. This involvement was a middle ground for bridging the political interests of Muslims in Palembang and in the same time following the political flow of the central government.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Civil Islam within the context of identity politics in Indonesia and Malaysia, focusing on its impact on the democratization process and public policy formulation in both countries. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research gathers data from primary and secondary sources to analyze how Civil Islam, through its interactions with the state and society, influences and is shaped by local political dynamics. The findings indicate that Civil Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia plays a crucial role in strengthening democracy through active participation in identity politics, directly responding to socio-political challenges emerging in the post-reform era. In Indonesia, the movement contributes to the consolidation of Pancasila as the foundational national ideology, while in Malaysia, it strives to harmonize ethnic and religious differences within a constitutional democracy framework. This study enriches our understanding of Islamic social movements not only as responses to social injustices but also as significant actors in the formulation and implementation of inclusive national ideologies. The findings have important implications for policymakers and social activists in designing strategies that promote social integration and political stability in culturally diverse regions.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the underlying factors, resolution strategies, and impediments concerning the land dispute on Kemaro Island between the Palembang City Government and the descendants of Kiai Merogan. Methodologically, this research employed a qualitative approach, utilising data collection techniques such as observation, document analysis, and interviews with key informants including descendants, government officials, and island managers, selected for their direct knowledge and involvement. Findings reveal that the conflict, stemming from government tourism development plans clashing with the descendants' historical land claims, initially escalated when development proceeded amidst ongoing litigation. However, subsequent dialogue successfully de-escalated tensions, leading to a shared vision for development. Key agreements included joint management oversight, the relinquishing of exclusive ownership claims by both parties, and a commitment to expedite the development process. The Mayor's withdrawal of legal proceedings and the family's advocacy for religious tourism were significant factors. Crucially, the proposal for an Islamic Centre, integrating religious, educational, and community functions, proved instrumental in reconciling the parties' interests. The study concludes that effective land dispute resolution in such contexts necessitates approaches that account for complex socio-cultural and religious dynamics, prioritising collective welfare and dialogue over purely legalistic frameworks.

Abstract

This article investigates the complex relationship between civil society, democratization, and civil Islam in Indonesia, focusing on the Reformasi era. It argues that civil society plays a vital role in promoting democratic governance and is crucial for the establishment and sustainability of democratic institutions. The study explores whether Islam can act as a driving force for progressive political change. Through a qualitative case study approach, the dynamics of civil Islamic movements and their interaction with Indonesia’s democratization process are examined. The findings indicate that civil Islam serves as a counterbalance to state power, advocating for justice, tolerance, and social rights. The study highlights how Indonesia’s interpretation of civil Islam, shaped by local socio-political contexts and cultural values, differs from Western notions of civil society. While civil Islam has significantly contributed to democratization, it continues to face challenges, including the threat of co-optation by political elites. The article emphasizes the need for a robust civil society that promotes autonomy and public participation, enabling civil Islam to play a critical role in supporting democracy and ensuring governance that reflects the aspirations of the Indonesian people.
