Abstract

This study aims to determine the structure of the mangrove community on the coast of Peunaga Rayeuk, Meurebo District, and West Aceh District. The method used in this study was line transect, making transects/plots for each observation station with a size of 10x10 m2 with 3 replications so that each observation station has an area of 30x10 m2. This research was conducted in October 2022. There were 2 types of mangroves included in the observation station, namely Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia alba, while the associated mangrove was of the type Acrostichum speciosum. In addition, there are also associated mangroves that are not included in the observation station but are located around the observation station, namely Nypa fruticans, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and Pandanus odoratissima. Stations 1 and 2 were dominated by sandy and muddy sand substrates, which respectively showed a diversity index of 0.054 and 0.149, a uniformity index of 0.078 and 0.215, and a dominance of 0.478 and 0.252. The most abundant species was R.apiculata with a relative density of 0.949 ind/ha, followed by S.alba of 0.051. Relative cover of R.apiculata and S.alba respectively with the range of 0.302 and 0.698. The results of this study concluded that over all the structure of the mangrove community on the coast of Peunaga Rayeuk is still classified as low, so it requires greater attention in the restoration and management of mangrove ecosystems

Abstract

Marine debris has become an increasing environmental threat in the world. West Aceh's coast is designated for tourism and fishing activities. This study determines the composition, characteristics, and abundance of waste on two selected beaches with economic activities for fishing (daily activities of coastal communities) and tourism activities. Garbage collection was carried out on two beaches on the coast of Johan Pahlawan District, West Aceh Regency, namely Pasar Baro Beach and Ujung Karang Beach. Pasar Baro Beach and Ujung Karang Beach were chosen because they are near fish market activities and recreational beaches, respectively. Determination of the sampling area by distance, from the low tide line to the first vegetation or concrete on the beach. The sampling length was measured using a 100 m roll meter parallel to the coastline. The results showed that the total weight (%) and frequency of waste per category were highest in the household category at Pasar Baro Beach. While at Ujung Karang Beach, the highest frequency of garbage is found in the variety of plastic drink bottles. The difference in abundance at the two stations is due to differences in visits and activities of the surrounding community. In addition, due to the lack of local cleaning efforts and facilities that could be more optimal, piles of garbage are still found along the coast

Abstract

The ability to adaptation  and change the behavior of fish is a physiological response that occurs naturally in fish in waters which is strongly influenced by aquatic environmental factors.   This research aimed to the  test  of adaptability and behavioral changed of fish as a resulted  of physiological responsed  to the changed in salinity. This research was carried out in March 2023 at the Environmental Productivity Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Teuku Umar University. The research procedure was carried out by inserting 5 test animals (catfish and goldfish) into an aquarium filled with 10 liters of water. Table salt was added to each aquarium with salinity treatment, namely 5 ppt and 10 ppt gradually over 7 days. Based on the research resulted, it showed that catfish and goldfish had different responses to physiological and behavioral adaptations with different salinity treatments (5 ppt and 10 ppt). Giving 5 ppt salinity to the test animals (catfish and goldfish) the operculum movement at 20 minutes still looked normal, the operculum movement began to slowed down as time increasing to  25 minutes and further slowed down at 30 minutes. Treated with 10 ppt salinity in the test animals ( catfish and goldfish) showed unusual changes in physiological behavior with high leveled of stress. In the 5 ppt and 10 ppt treated  with added salinity on the second to seventh day the catfish experienced mortality with a survival rated of 60%, while in the 5 ppt and 10 ppt treated  with added salinity the goldfish on the first to the seventh day experienced mortality with a survival rated of 0%.

Abstract

The reaserch on variation analysis of the nutrients (N, P and Si) consentration in waters of Meulaboh Bay was conducted on Mei-July 2014 in Meulaboh Bay. Sampling Location on each observation sampling points as purposing sampling at 10 sites, wich consist of river, mouth river, bay waters, middle of bay to outer of bay. The purpose in this research was to analysis variation of the nutrients (N, P and Si) consentration in waters of Meulaboh Bay. The result in this research to nutrients (N,  P and Si) consentration values at the observation sites consecutive among them were, ammonia (sites A-E = 0,074-0,276 mg.L-1  and sites F-J  0,045-0,199 mg.L-1 )  nitrite (sites A-E = 0,002-0,127 mg.L-1  dan  sites F-J  0,001-0,021 mg.L-1 ),  nitrate  (sites A-E = 0,014-0,646 mg.L-1  dan  sites  F-J  0,020-0,193 mg.L-1 ), ortophosphate  (sites A-E = 0,001-0,693 mg.L-1  dan  sites F-J  0,001-0,013 mg.L-1), dan silicate  (stasiun A-E = 0,604-4,520 mg.L-1  dan  stasiun F-J  0,803-4,132 mg.L-1 ). As for variation of the nutrients (N, P and Si) consentration showed that the values deacreased toward the outer of Bay which far from coastal and increased toward the river waters wich near from tersterial land. This matter was caused presence fresh water input from teresterial land trough river that carried hight nutrients to the waters

Abstract

This study was undertaken in September 2023 in the West Aceh Coastal area with the goal of identifying and analyzing the distribution of marine creatures discovered at the two research sites. The sampling of marine debris was determined using a transect length of approximately 100 m. Transect distances were separated into four categories: 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 m. Marine debris was detected using Lippiat et al. (2013) categories and NOAA (2013) size classifications. The data on the identification and distribution of marine debris was analyzed descriptively. The results revealed that organic waste (wood and its derivatives) was in the highest quantity and composition at both research stations, with 1386 (73%) and 8953 fractions (97.1%). This is followed by the number and composition of inorganic waste (plastic) at the two research stations, which are 492 fragments (26%), and 205 fragments (2.2%). The lowest amount and composition of inorganic waste (non-plastic) were found at both research stations, such as metal/metal, glass, rubber, and clothing/other fibers, namely (metal: 6 and 11; glass: 2 and 1; rubber: 2 and 28; clothing and other fibers: 18 and 24) with respective compositions ranging (metal: 0.3% and 0.1%; glass: 0.1% and 0.0%; rubber: 0.1% and 0.3%; clothing and other fibers: 0.9% and 0.3%). A one-way examination of the spatial distribution of marine debris at each research substation (Substations 1, 2, and 3) revealed no significant differences (p value > 0.05) between the two research stations.  Keywords: coastal, debris, marine, West Aceh
