Abstract

This sociolinguistic research analyzes code-mixing occurrences in the Indonesian novel entitled A Very Yuppy Wedding. This research aims to find (1) the types of code-mixing and (2) the factors influencing code-mixing in the studied novel. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method through library research. The results show that the types of code-mixing in the conversation within the novel are insertion, alteration, and congruent lexicalization. Meanwhile, the factors influencing code-mixing done by the characters in the novel are (1) participant roles and relationships, (2) situational factors, (3) message intrinsic factors, and (4) language attitudes, dominance, and security. This research finds that insertion code-mixing dominates the types of code-mixing found in the novel. The characters in the novel often insert an English word or phrase into their utterance, which is in the Indonesian Language, especially when they talk to their coworkers. The characters also tend to mix their Language depending on situational factors such as settings and topics of discourse. For example, they will insert English words or phrases to discuss business and sports.

Abstract

This is linguistic research of translation that presents an analysis of translation shifts in the novel entitled “Menuju Titik Nol,” which is the Indonesian translation of an English novel “Towards Zero.” The purpose of this research is to find out the types of translation shifts and the most frequent type of translation shifts that occur in the translation. The method that is used in this research is a descriptive qualitative research method. From the translation, the researcher takes the first 100 data of translation shifts and then analyzes the data to identify the types and the most frequent translation shifts in the target text using related translation shifts theories. The results of this research show that the types of shifts found in the Indonesian translation of Towards Zero are level shifts and all types of category shifts, which are structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. The occurrence of all types of translation shifts in the translation is due to the difference in some linguistic systems of both languages. The most frequent shifts that occur in the translation is structure shifts. The structure shifts are found in the translation of noun phrases and the translation of active sentences into passive or vice versa.

Abstract

This is sociolinguistic research that analyzes code-switching occurrences in the Indonesian novel entitled A Very Yuppy Wedding. The aims of this research are to discover the types of code-switching and the factors that influence code-switching in the studied novel. The researcher in conducting this research used a descriptive qualitative method which is done through library research. The results of this research show that the types of code-switching in the conversation contained in the novel are intasentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and emblematic switching. Meanwhile, the factors that influence code-switching in the novel conversation are participant roles and relationships, situational factors, message intrinsic factors, and language attitudes, dominance, and security. This research found that inter-sentential switching dominates the types of code-switching in the novel. The characters often switch their language mostly because of language attitude, dominance, and security. It means that code-switching is viewed positively so that people tend to code-switch in their daily communication, and the switching is smooth.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the semiotic analysis contained in the lyrics of a song entitled "Wijayakusuma" by Ardhito Pramono. This research method uses descriptive analysis. The results of this study reveal that, based on the results of a semiotic analysis of the lyrics of the song, the first trichotomy that often appears is the meaning of the index and also the symbol. The first trichotomy, namely Denotatum, has 12 data. There is 1 data which includes an icon, 4 indexes, and 7 symbols. Overall, the lyrics of the song semiotically mean love and longing for the beauty of nature so that its sustainability is maintained. After conducting research, it is hoped that this research will provide benefits in the development of semiotics. In addition, it is hoped that this research will provide benefits for writers who are interested in semiotics and know how to apply it.
