Abstract

Students require confidence in order to use language they are learning, yet self-confidence remains a challenge for them in language learning. This research examines Video Project-Based Learning (VPBL) which is a video learning method as an educational process of delivering knowledge and skills. In this study, the researchers focus on students’ perception on the use of project-based learning using video as a method to promote students’ confidence in learning English. The study was conducted at the fifth semester of 2019-2020 academic year in English Education Department of a university in Bogor. The data was collected by qualitative approach with open-ended questionnaire and semi-structed interview for ten students as the respondents. This research found that the use of VPBL can facilitate student information processing faster, retain knowledge and remember materials accurately, encourage students to apply and develop their creativity in learning, promote students’ confidence in speaking skills and enhance speaking skills with their own understanding and creativity with the lesson. This research advises taking a broader view of students' self-confidence as the implication of video project-based learning in individual project is really needed.

The first grade of one of the Islamic senior high schools in Pandeglang was the participant, there were 31 students tested and surveyed. Pre-experimental (one-group pretest-posttest design) was used to gain students data. The research findings indicated that students’ reading comprehension improve greatly. It showed from the finding results that the value of t(count) was (= 3,77) from significant standard of (α) 5% and 1% of t table was 2,04 and 2,75 then the data analysis showed that t(table) = (2,04) was lower than t(count)= (3,77.) It was marginally estimated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and Guide Note Taking strategy had positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. Abstract

The purpose of this research was to design and develop teaching material in the form of an electronic book using the Book Creator application for the Grammar in Written Discourse course. Design-based research was the method chosen which had 4 stages, namely problem identification and need analysis, program prototype development, testing and implementation, and reflection to obtain the expected design principles and overcome various problems that arise. This research was taken at a private university in Indonesia. There were 50 students voluntarily participating in this study. The data was collected from questionnaires, individual interviews, focused-group discussions, and document analyses. The research data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings revealed that students felt so enthusiastic with the presence of this grammar in written discourse E-book as their handbook which uses multimodal approach moreover the use of the multimodal approach in this E-book not only can assist students’ comprehension but also dig and train students’ autonomous learning. The findings and the design-based research approach adopted are applicable to tertiary students in other educational contexts as well as other areas of research interest.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' engagement experiences in hybrid listening class. Three experiences of engagement were dig by the researcher those were behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. The qualitative research method with a narrative inquiry was used in this study. The participants were 8 students from the fifth semester of a university in Indonesia. The data were collected through interviews and student reflections. The thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The finding revealed that experiences related to behavioral engagement: noticing the lecturer’s explanation, and class participation (asking questions, learning practice) were more active in offline sessions than in online sessions. In addition, students showed their dominant engagement during offline sessions in cognitive activities like learning planning, efforts, strategies, challenges, and student achievements. Meanwhile, for emotional experience, students were enjoyed and happy with both sessions (online/offline), one of the reasons is its flexibility, especially for the listening material which allowed students to slowly grasp concepts and ensure full comprehension in both sessions. In essence, although students have an interest in hybrid learning, students still have a preference and a high tendency for offline sessions.

Abstract

Recently, designing a digital multimodal learning media is a must for interesting and effective teaching. Likewise, this study aimed to explore students' experience in designing digital multimodal learning media. A narrative study was conducted to dig into eight students' experiences in a private university in Banten Province. Data were collected through interviews, students' reflective journals, and documentations to gain deeper insights and were analyzed using Thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The finding revealed three students’ experiences: 1) Most students have a variety of backgrounds related to the use of digital media, such as having taught using digital media in school and having knowledge of designing digital media projects from lecturers in class, but they rarely attend any digital learning seminars or workshops that can help them operate digital media. 2) The majority of students used and experienced the Canva application; 3) From the 12 multimedia design principles, only 7 were implemented by students, including multimedia, coherence, personalization, spatial contiguity, segmentation, pre-training, and modality. These findings suggest that educators and learners should consider digital media design principles when creating content, highlighting the importance of a multimodal approach.

Abstract

The formerly studies regarding the effectiveness of teaching using a mobile phone on students’ vocabulary mastery are widely discussed. While the process of how students acquire that vocabulary from a mobile phone is barely touched. That’s why the purpose of this study is to investigate the process of students acquiring English vocabulary from mobile phone use and whether the students comprehend the meaning of the vocabulary that they acquire or not. The design of this study employed study case design. The subject of this study was 7 students at a fourth-grade elementary school. The observation and interview were used for data collection. The research results demonstrated that mobile phone has great potential as an instructional tool for acquiring English vocabulary. The findings also indicated that the process of acquiring English vocabulary is caused by two factors. The first is psycholinguistic factors and the second is social factors. The finding indicated that the psycholinguistic factors hold the significant one. It can be seen from the repetition and exploration done by their own self in acquiring the English vocabulary. While the social factor such as people around them (their parents and friends) have less contribution in assisting them in acquiring the English vocabulary. Regarding the comprehension of vocabulary that they acquired, the findings suggested that three students understand and know the real meaning of most of the English vocabulary that they gained from daily mobile phone use. While the rest (four) students knew the words only based on words function without knowing the real meaning of each English word. Generally, findings clearly showed that mobile phones facilitated students in acquiring English vocabulary independently.
