Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores the integration of Islamic Social Finance (ISF) with environmental sustainability, aiming to evaluate the potential and challenges of using Islamic financial tools like zakat, waqf, and sukuk to support green projects. The research employs a narrative literature review methodology, analyzing over 200 studies, and categorizing them by thematic areas such as the role of Islamic finance instruments in sustainability, the incorporation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, and the barriers to effective implementation. Key findings indicate that ISF can play a significant role in addressing sustainability goals, particularly in funding renewable energy, climate change mitigation, and social development projects. However, the study also highlights several challenges, including regulatory inconsistencies, lack of awareness among stakeholders, and insufficient institutional capacity. Additionally, the integration of Maqasid al-Shari’ah principles with modern sustainability frameworks has been proposed as a way to enhance the ethical alignment of ISF with environmental goals. Despite these opportunities, the paper points out that regulatory gaps and the limited understanding of ISF’s potential for environmental impact are major barriers. The study concludes that enhancing regulatory frameworks and promoting the use of technology, such as blockchain and fintech, can improve the transparency, accountability, and effectiveness of ISF tools. The findings provide valuable insights into how Islamic finance can support sustainable development, while suggesting further empirical research to evaluate ISF's real-world impact and potential for scaling green finance initiatives.

Abstract

This research explores the evolving role of mosques in contemporary society, particularly focusing on their functions beyond religious observance. The purpose is to examine the various aspects of mosque management, including disaster response, community engagement, health initiatives, financial sustainability, and environmental stewardship. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzed literature collected from Scopus database, emphasizing articles published between 2015 and 2025. Findings indicate that mosques have significantly expanded their influence, transforming into key community hubs. They are increasingly recognized for fostering social cohesion through educational programs, health initiatives, and economic empowerment activities. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, mosques adapted quickly by implementing health protocols and providing essential services, thus reinforcing their role in public health management. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of transparent financial practices and the integration of environmental sustainability efforts in mosque operations. The implications of these findings suggest that mosques, when effectively managed, can enhance community resilience, promote socio-economic development, and contribute to environmental sustainability. Future research should investigate the long-term impact of mosque-based programs on community well-being and explore strategies for overcoming barriers such as limited resources and resistance to change. By embracing these roles, mosques can continue to serve as pillars of support and transformation within their communities.

Abstract

This article explores recent developments in the study of the history of Islam in Indonesia, highlighting methodological shifts and thematic expansions among scholars. Contemporary historiography has moved beyond traditional emphases on political and institutional narratives to embrace more nuanced explorations of Islam’s social, cultural, and local manifestations. Recent research reflects a paradigm shift from grand narratives toward micro-histories that capture the diverse expressions of Islam across regions. The increased utilization of local sources—such as manuscripts, colonial archives, and oral traditions—has enriched the understanding of Islamic dynamics in Indonesia. Employing interdisciplinary approaches that draw on anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies, the study of Islamic history has become more complex and inclusive. These trends not only advance academic discourse but also contribute to shaping a dynamic and context-sensitive Islamic identity within the Indonesian archipelago. This study adopts a qualitative literature review method by analyzing peer-reviewed scholarly articles published between 2015 and 2023, primarily sourced from the Scopus database. The analysis employs thematic coding to synthesize key findings across four main domains: historical foundations, Islamic organizations, education, and legal frameworks. This approach enables a comprehensive understanding of contemporary historiographical trends in the study of Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

The trend of digital nomadism has increased for several years, but limited studies examined digital nomadism from a work ethic view. This study explores the possibility of the Malays being digital nomads using Weber’s Work Ethic and Cultural Adaptationist approach. This study used a qualitative approach with a library research design. A qualitative study was conducted by scrutinizing literature related to digital nomads and Malays’ work ethic. Two primary keywords for obtaining data were “Digital Nomads” and “Malay Work Ethic”. After searching for these keywords, 127 articles, books, and reports were received and sorted again according to research purposes. The selected sources were subjected to thematic analysis to identify patterns, concepts, relations, and meanings gathered from the data. The results show that the Malays will potentially join the digital nomadism trend in the future, but they will preserve Islamic values as their work ethic principles. Digital nomads in the Malay region should adapt to local values to be accepted in local communities. This study contributes to the Malay World study in response to the globalization of the workplace.

Abstract

This study explores the potential integration of Islamic Social Finance (ISF) within the circular economy framework, aiming to contribute to sustainable environmental and social development. The research investigates how instruments such as zakat, waqf, and infaq can be utilized to finance projects that promote resource management, waste reduction, and renewable energy initiatives. The methodology employed is a narrative literature review, focusing on high-quality academic sources from Scopus to synthesize existing knowledge and identify gaps in the current literature. The findings reveal that ISF, particularly zakat and waqf, can play a crucial role in financing sustainable projects. These instruments are shown to have significant potential in supporting environmental sustainability efforts, such as waste management and energy solutions. Furthermore, the integration of financial technologies, such as blockchain, is highlighted as a means to improve the transparency and efficiency of managing ISF funds for green projects. However, challenges such as insufficient regulatory frameworks, limited public awareness, and low participation in sustainability initiatives remain barriers to fully harnessing ISF’s potential in the circular economy. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by developing a conceptual framework that connects ISF with the circular economy. The study underscores the importance of enhancing policy support and increasing societal engagement to maximize the effectiveness of ISF in achieving environmental and social sustainability. Further empirical research is recommended to validate the proposed models and explore practical applications in diverse regions and sectors.

Abstract

This study explores the intersection of the Gig Economy, algorithmic management, and Islamic work ethics within Indonesia’s halal economy governance. Using a narrative review approach based on the Scopus database with the Boolean string “GIG ECONOMY” AND “HALAL INDUSTRY,” it synthesizes multidisciplinary literature to evaluate how digital efficiency aligns with maqāṣid al-sharīʿah principles. Findings indicate hat while the platform economy expands employment opportunities, it also generates ethical challenges regarding worker autonomy, algorithmic transparency, and fair remuneration. Algorithmic control often contradicts Islamic values of ‘adl (justice), amanah (trust), and maslahah (public welfare). The study proposes sharia-based governance, Islamic social protection instruments, and blockchain-enabled algorithmic audits to enhance ethical digital labor systems. Contributing to the integration of Islamic ethics and digital governance, this research underscores the need for future empirical studies to develop measurable indicators of sharia-based algorithmic fairness for global application.

Abstract

This study investigates the importance of Islamic philanthropy, particularly zakat and waqf, in combating child stunting in Indonesia. Islamic philanthropy can work as a long-term and effective way to reach this goal by combining ethical frameworks, institutional progress, and policies that have been proven to work in the real world. The study uses a narrative review method that is based on looking at history. The process entails methodically gathering literature from the Scopus database utilizing Boolean search strings such as Islamic Philanthropy, Stunting AND Indonesia, Zakat, and Waqf. The findings indicate that Islamic social finance has transitioned from traditional charitable donations to a system focused on impact, integrating religious principles with national development objectives. Faith-based financing can help improve nutrition, sanitation, and maternal health outcomes, as shown by programs like Zakat Community Development and Cash Waqf Linked Sukuk. However, integrating Islamic philanthropy into public health frameworks encounters obstacles stemming from regulatory ambiguity, fragmented governance, and inadequate impact evaluation. The study stresses the importance of having standardized performance metrics, working together across sectors, and making progress in digital technology to make sure that developmental outcomes can be measured. This study fundamentally enriches both theoretical and practical comprehension of Islamic philanthropy, reconciling the intersection of religious obligation and enduring human advancement. It offers a culturally attuned approach to achieving health equity and social justice in Muslim-majority contexts.
