Abstract

Dental plaque is a soft deposit consisting of a collection of various kinds of microorganisms, and is a major cause of caries and periodontal disease. One way to control plaque is by chewing xylitol gum which has been proven to be quite effective in cleaning teeth from plaque, increasing salivary pH, and stimulating saliva production. Xylitol is also able to reduce the synthesis of extracellular polysaccharides that can lead to the attachment of plaque bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of consuming chewing gum containing xylitol on the plaque index in class V Sdn 71 Mibo children in Banda Aceh City. This research method is a quasi-experimental (quasi-experimental) method using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique is the total population, which is 33 students. This study was conducted on February 15, 2022. The data analysis in this study is quantitative data using a parametric statistical test Paired Sample T-test. The results showed that there was a significant difference between before and after chewing gum containing xylitol on plaque index scores in graders. V SDN 71 Mibo Banda Aceh City p=0.001. It can be concluded that there is an effect of consuming chewing gum containing xylitol on plaque index in fifth graders at SDN 71 Mibo, Banda Aceh City. Abstract

Plaque is an organic deposit that is an indicator of dental and oral hygiene. The emergence of dental plaque can be prevented by taking preventive measures, namely by brushing teeth accompanied by the use of toothpaste. In the market, there are various toothpaste products with various brands with various compositions. Among them is toothpaste with ingredients that contain herbs and toothpaste that does not contain herbs. The herbal content in toothpaste is expected to inhibit plaque growth because it is related to the ability of herbal ingredients to inhibit microbial growth. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of herbal and non-herbal toothpaste in reducing plaque index. This research method is quasi-experimental with pretest and posttest. A sample of 46 respondents was obtained using the Slovin formula and divided into 2 groups, namely group I for herbal toothpaste with 23 respondents and group II for non-herbal toothpaste with 23 respondents. The plaque index was measured using the PHP-M (Personal Hygiene Performance Modified) method. Paired t-test was used to determine differences in dental plaque index before and after treatment. Results The average plaque index after using herbal toothpaste and after using non-herbal toothpaste was 30.35 and 34.78. Dependent sample t-test analysis showed that the mean difference in plaque index in the two groups was 4.43. Conclusion: there is a big average difference between the two variables above or the use of herbal toothpaste is better than non-herbal toothpaste based on the PHP-m index value and the use of herbal toothpaste is better for lowering the PHP-m index. (CI 90% p= 0.092).

Abstract

Rampant caries is a multifactorial disease that interacts with each other. Factors in the incidence of dental caries include factors from food, oral hygiene, and habits that are not in accordance with health such as eating food and feeding through bottles. In addition, parents' misunderstanding of the causes of caries, such as using milk, further exacerbates the occurrence of rampant caries in children. This study aims to determine the relationship between mother's behavior regarding bottle feeding with rampant caries in TK Negeri 7 Sabang City. This research is analytic with cross-sectional approach. Sampling used total sampling, namely all 45 children of TK Negeri 7 Sabang City and their mothers as respondents, by conducting dental examinations on children and interviews with mothers. The research instrument used a diagnostic set and a questionnaire. The results of the study were tested statistically using the SPSS program with a chi-square test (a = 0.05). It can be concluded that there is a relationship between mother's behavior about bottle feeding and rampant caries in TK Negeri 7 Sabang City. It is recommended to further improve good behavior towards children when giving bottle milk to avoid rampant caries.
