Abstract

Abstract: This current research focused on identifying the contributing factors of students’ anxiety and to describe the type of anxiety that faced by low and high speaking achievers. This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The result of this research showed that both categorized students placed at “anxious” (low speaking achievers) and “mildly anxious” (high speaking achievers). It also gives a description that anxious students do not have a low score and mildly anxious students may not always have a good score. In this research, 2 anxious students are having a bit lower score from the other students, meanwhile 2 other students with mildly anxious having satisfactory score. The percentage of students’ response was also classed into three type of anxiety. 33.3% of students experienced communicative apprehension, whereas 30.3% feel anxious in test anxiety, and 36.4% of them were getting anxious in fear of negative evaluation. The last type of anxiety got the highest percentage. Keywords: anxiety, low speaking achiever, high speaking achiever

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to describe the vocabulary learning strategies used by high achievers. The research design used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects in this study were fourth semester students who were high achievers in the English Education Department. The subjects in this study were 10 students. To collect data in this study, the researcher using questionnaires to get validity of the data and interviews as supporting instruments. The questionnaire consisted of 25 multiple choices which included 6 kinds of vocabulary learning strategies according to Oxford (1990). The results of this study are high achievers using memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategy in learning vocabulary. Meanwhile, the strategy most often used by high achievers is the compensation strategy. The researcher offer suggestion as follows: 1) For teacher, this research can provide information related to various strategies in learning vocabulary so that it can be used to improve vocabulary skills in students also it can facilitate the teaching and learning process. 2) For students, the students are suggested to use more strategy in learning vocabulary especially compensation strategy. 3) For readers, this research can help readers to increase knowledge about vocabulary learning strategies. 4) For the other researchers, this research can be a reference and can help other researchers to develop similar research so that it is expected to find new findings from the research conducted.Key words: High achievers, advanced vocabulary, vocabulary learning strategies

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to know the learners’ perception on their online reading comprehension learning at the English Education Department at the second semester of University of Islam Malang. A qualitative approach research design was used in this study. The participants are 30 students from second semester of English Education Department, class 2A and 2B. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 30 statements. Google Form was used to obtain the data and the result was used to analyze the data. As a result of the study, the researcher concluded that the benefits of online reading have had a substantial effect on the knowledge of learners' comprehension, and that students have strongly focused on the educational evaluation they read. The are advantages; the convenience when you understand the text because of the design/facilities, save print paper, transparent screen without bad printing quality, improve online translation, helpful to understand information, important to improve reading skills and the disadvantages; Incapability to leave a mark and make a notation, exhaustion of read many sentences on the light screen, and the distractions.Key Words : Learners’ Perception, Online Learning, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to reveal students’ listening comprehension difficulties and strategies to overcome the listening comprehension problems by high achievers. The strategies were necessary to improve the listening skill and counter the difficulties in listening comprehension. The research method was qualitative research method. The participants of this study were four students. The researcher was asked for recommendation to the listening lecturers, then the researcher met them personally, then the researcher conducted the open-ended interview session to collect the data. The researcher was used familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and organizing to analyze the collected data. The findings of the research explained that the difficulties included limited vocabulary, speed of native speakers’ speech, natives speakers’ accent, classroom environment, lack of concentration and motivation. However, the students’ strategies were the use of media as the learning tool, practicing listening material continuously and reading short stories to get new vocabulary. The students suggested applying the strategies provided to overcome their difficulties. However, this research was expected to be developed by the future researchers who had the same interest.

Abstract

ABSTRACT : This research aimed to improve students’ writing ability of narrative text at the first grade of SMA Islam Nusantara Malang. Joint construction is a teaching technique that can be used to help teacher in improving students’ writing ability. This study used a classroom action research design. This classroom action research design was conducted in one cycle which consisted of three meetings and last meeting for test. Subject of this study was on the first grade of SMA Islam Nusantara Malang in first grade of IPA with eleven students. Researcher did a pretest to know students’writing ability. Results of students’ score were lower than standard minimum score. Lesson plan was designed as a teaching instruments to reach criteria of success in SMA Islam Nusantara Malang. Criteria of success is 75.00. Besides implementing a joint construction, field notes helped this study to know the process in improving students’ writing ability. Based on result of test and field notes, this study stopped in one cycle because the criteria of success were achieved.In conclusion, joint construction helped the students improve their narrative text writing abilty by 1.) Teacher’s defining narrative text to the class 2.) Putting the student in groups of four 3.) Sharing with students about ways of writing narrative text 4.) Asking the students to have group discussion on narrative text writing 5.) Asking its group to make presentation on narrative text writing 6.) Teacher giving feedback to students’ narrative text writing 7.) Student’s revising their narrative text writing in group. This study suggests that teacher should use steps of joint construction in writing class. The researcher hopes that future researcher can add and complete this study from different research design. Keywords: writing ability, narrative text, and joint Construction.

Abstract

Abstract: Microteaching is one way to prepare pre-service teachers to teach perfectly when practicing teaching. However, in microteaching there are unexpected problems by pre-service teachers, such as procedural, managerial, psychological, instructional, and professional. From some of these problems the researcher has the aim of the study of enriching strategies and overcoming problems encountered by pre service teachers when teaching practice. The research study design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The population of the study was students of eight-semester in University of Islam Malang.The participant were 60 pre-service teachers. The instrument of the research was questionnaire and interview. The questions of the test were made by the researcher. For getting valid test, the text of the test was measured by using data triangulation. From the difficulties above, some of pre-service teachers getting problems in preparing mentally, teaching materials, and knowledge so that pre-service teachers feel nervous while in front of the class. Therefore, there are four strategies that suitable to deal the difficulties that encountered by pre-service teacher at UNISMA are cooperative learning, setting up classroom management, interesting media, student-centered. For future researchers who are interested in discussing teaching difficulties and the strategies used can add quantitative data to get more results of lecturer, students, and course that are detailed and support qualitative data.Keywords: Microteaching, Teaching Practice, Problem of Teaching Practice, Strategies used

Abstract

Abstract: Descriptive text is a crucial text that must be learned by the students. This article aims at knowing the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text and the strategies that used by the students  to overcome their difficulties in writing descriptive text. The population of this research was the second semester students of English Departemtn at University of Islam Malang. The participants consisted of 34 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire as the instrument that covered the difficulties and strategies in writing descriptive text. The finding of this research showed that the students’ biggest problems in writing descriptive text were lack of vocabulary, poor grammar knowledge, organizing idea, developing idea, and generic structure. To overcome these problems, there are some strategies used by the students in writing descriptive text included decide a topic before writing, use a dictionary to chek vocabulary, make an outline, revise a sentence, and share writing with one another.Key Words: Students’ Difficulties and Strategies, Writing, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Facing students’ difficulties in grammar acquisition, different teaching technique is introduced. Classroom based online game is one of the technique that can be used to improve students’ grammar mastery issue. This techique is an instructional activity that uses online platform for learning games which can be utilized to introduce, test and revise variety of material including language lesson. The objective of this study was to find out whether the use of classroom based online game technique in teaching English could improve grammar mastery of the first semester students of English Department, University of Islam Malang. The research design of the study was classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in one cycle consisting of four meetings. The subject of this study were 25 first semester students of English Department. In this study, the researcher used some instruments; those were: field note to take the information of the students’ activities in the classroom and grammar test to know the students’ achievement. The findings indicated that the application of this technique improved the students’ grammar mastery. It was proven that 76% of students got the score above the minimal mastery level criterion. It was higher than the preliminary study that only 24% of students achieved the minimal mastery level criterion.

Abstract

AbstrakThe aim of this research is to describe the speaking difficulties faced by good speaking achievers, and to explain learning strategies used by good speaking achiever of English department of University of Islam Malang overcome their difficulties. Here, good speaking achievers are the forth semester students who can speak English very well in which they get A score in every semester and participated in competition related to English. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher took two selected participants from the fourth grade of University of Islam Malang. The researcher used three instruments; interview guide, document and documentation. The finding of the study explained that mostly good speaking students had difficulties in learning speaking. The problems faced by the learners were lack of vocabulary, difficult in pronunciation, nervousness and less confident. The participants also had some strategies to overcome their problems. To encourage new vocabularies, the strategies that good speaking students used were watching the movie and listening to music. Then, practicing speaking often was strategy that the learner applied to overcome heir difficulties in pronunciation. Moreover, the strategy that participant used in solving their nervousness and their less confidence was talking to the lecturer and their close friends. Key Words: Speaking skill, speaking difficulties, learning strategies.
