Abstract

Exposure to Instagram Fitspiration images creates negative perceptions toward one’s body. Drawing on third-person effect (TPE) theory, this study aims to explain such feelings among viewers and examine the effect of appearance self-schema as an underlying cause of negative body image and the perceived impact of Fitspiration images on the self and others. A total of 301 university students who were viewers of Fitspiration images were recruited to complete a survey on demographic characteristics, body image, appearance self-schema, and the perceived impact of Fitspiration images on the self and others. Results show that the perceived effect of Fitspiration is greater on others than on the self. Appearance self-schema and the perceived impact of the media on others are negatively correlated with body image. Moreover, appearance self-schema positively counts for the perceived impact of Fitspiration images on the self and others. The robustness of TPE theory was confirmed in the context of Fitspiration images. Theoretically, TPE theory was expanded by introducing appearance self-schema as a predictor of first- and third-person perceptions. Some practical recommendations were made for young viewers and educationalists about the physical and mental health education related to the findings of this study.

Abstract

The translation of song lyrics is challenging for translators primarily due to the intricate poetic and musical elements, which often compel them to employ specific strategies for effective translation. This study was an attempt to investigate the translation strategies in selected translated movie song lyrics and explore the challenges in translating the lyrics. In this qualitative study, the songs were purposefully selected from “Mulan” (1998) and “Aladdin” (2019) movies. Low’s (2013) translation strategies were applied during the process of translation. The “Translation” (transfer of material with a reasonably high degree of semantic fidelity), and “Replacement” (a re-creation of text by only preserving the music element) strategies were found as the common strategies in the translation of song lyrics. The use of a replacement strategy could be due to technical difficulties in translating songs, such as the constraint of rhythm, hence a total replacement of meanings to match the rhythm of the song. A significant challenge in translating song lyrics from English to Chinese was in translating the concept of face-saving, which is an eminent process in social interactions in Chinese culture. It was concluded that the use of a translation strategy depended on the lyrics, translators’ creativity, melody, rhyme, and the differences between the languages and cultures, while the “skopos”, i.e., the correspondence of aim/purpose in the source and target cultures should play the key role.

Abstract

Although China’s teacher education policies have achieved significant progress in improving teacher quality, they have also undergone substantial changes and encountered new challenges. It is necessary to systematically analyze policies from the past decade to achieve a prudent balance between the immediacy and foresight of policymaking. This systematic analysis paper examines China’s teacher education policies from 2012 to 2023, reviewing relevant policy documents from authoritative sources. The study reveals a strategic shift towards fostering comprehensive and innovative teacher talent, promoting professional development, and addressing urbanrural education disparities. Emphasis is placed on strengthening professional ethics and creating a societal atmosphere of respect for teachers. However, challenges arise, including the “de-normalization” of teacher education in higher education institutions, regional disparities in teacher resources, and issues in in-service teacher education. These findings have profound implications for the future of teacher education policies, both within China and globally. They underscore the need for ongoing policy review and adaptation, the importance of balance between research and teaching in teacher education programs, and the need for a more integrated and streamlined approach to in-service teacher education and professional development. The study provides insights for policy development in the field of teacher education.

Abstract

Private university instructors in Malaysia faced obstacles in their adaptation to the online learning mode while holding their pre-existing academic duties. This research aimed to explore those obstacles, and observe how the instructors tailored their pedagogical approaches. The research employed a qualitative research design. We used convenience sampling to select eight instructors from three private universities in Malaysia using semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that the main challenges were instructors’ own workload and lessened time for professional development, the incompatibility of the provided multimedia with their teaching approaches, as well as the problem with their students’ readiness and participation. It was found that the instructors adapted their pedagogical approaches with a main focus on learners’ cognitive development, and this was hoped to be achieved through their choices of learning tools and multimedia, instructional strategies of collaborative and reflective learning, and consideration of learning outcomes and objectives. The instructors also incorporated their students’ feedback into their content development to increase the engagement. Interestingly, some instructors initiated their own content and approach, while receiving support from their institutes, peers, and other resources. The findings may contribute positively to instructor’s efforts in providing and maintaining an interactive, productive and stable learning environment.

Abstract

In this paper, the Chinese to English literary translation of Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) published between 2019 and 2024 is analyzed. Different types of CSIs, such as idioms, historical references, proverbs, and culturally specific phrases, are among the most difficult items to translate because of their deep cultural meaning and the challenge in finding appropriate English equivalents. Although exploration of cultural factors and their translations has become increasingly popular, particularly in Translation Studies, systematic reviews of CSIs especially in Chinese to English literary contexts are limited. We employed a qualitative content analysis to synthesize the findings of 25 selected and refined articles. Among them, 18 were empirical articles, while seven were reviews, mainly focusing on the theoretical and conceptual features of CSIs, collected from Google Scholar, JSTOR, and PubMed databases. Three major themes were identified: (1) definitions and typologies of CSIs, (2) translation strategies, and (3) translation errors. We found that among the various strategies and procedures involved in translating CSIs, domestication, foreignization, annotation, adaptation, and literal translation were the most popular, each acknowledging their context-specific efficiencies and limitations. Furthermore, the identified translation errors included cultural misinterpretation, loss of style, omission, and loss of functionality. These errors could often hinder reader comprehension and negatively influence the narrative. Based on the findings, we recommend maintaining a balance between linguistic and cultural faithfulness, emphasizing genre sensitivity, recognizing the significance of translator visibility, and in-depth exploration of the context, and functional equivalence. Conducting empirical reception studies, in addition to further examination of genre representation, integration of human evaluation, and exploring the potential role of translation technology in translating cultural items could offer theoretical and practical guidance to literary translators dealing with cultural items.
