Abstract

Abstract

Proficiency in the practice of interpreting refers to one’s ability to effectively translate a source language into a target language while ensuring the meaning is conveyed accurately. This research specifically focused on the use of Indonesian as the source language and English as the target language, which is crucial in the tourism industry, especially in Sungailiat City. This research used a survey-based approach and uses supporting theory as a research methodology to investigate the effectiveness of translation practices from Indonesian to English. Data collection includes interviews and observations. The primary data obtained was analyzed to reveal the challenges faced by tour guides or shoreline security officers in implementing these practices, as well as the potential opportunities available to them through continued implementation. The results of this research can increase the awareness of professionals directly involved in the tourism industry and provide educational insights for tour guides and local communities managing tourist attractions. Additionally, it can contribute to improving the skills of guides, thereby expanding their knowledge to encourage socio-economic growth in the Sungailiat tourism sector.

Abstract

Effective technology integration in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching requires teachers to develop strong Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). In Indonesia, where teacher education programs increasingly emphasize digital learning, understanding pre-service EFL teachers’ self-concept of TPACK is crucial for assessing their readiness before entering the profession. This study examines the TPACK profile of Indonesian pre-service EFL teachers, identifying their strengths and areas for improvement in applying technology to language instruction. The study involved 111 final-year undergraduate and first-year master's students who had completed teaching practice but had no formal teaching experience. Data were collected using a TPACK survey and analyzed through descriptive statistics to identify patterns in their TPACK mastery. Findings reveal that pre-service teachers are confident in their content knowledge (CK) and basic technological skills (TK). Still, they struggle with the full integration of technology into pedagogy (TPK), pedagogical adaptability (PK), and leadership in TPACK. While they acknowledge the importance of technology in teaching, gaps persist in their ability to select and apply diverse technologies effectively in classroom settings. Additionally, they face challenges adapting teaching strategies to different learners and assessing student understanding in varied ways. Their leadership in supporting peers with TPACK integration was also limited. These insights underscore the need for curricular enhancements in teacher education programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, focusing on practical applications of TPACK, deeper technological and pedagogical training, and leadership development to better prepare future EFL educators for technology-enhanced instruction.

Abstract

In Bangkanese society, politeness is a crucial social component measured by how individuals treat one another in social situations. Here, being polite is understood to include having decent manners, which include saying hello, recognising, and thanking people. This study looks at the interactions between traders and tourists in Pantai Matras, taking its inspiration from the Bangka government, which places a strong emphasis on manners. The utilisation of openings and closings in 20 transactions that were retrieved over a week through attentive monitoring was the main focus of the study. The data were then transcribed. The Bangkanese concept of good manners, which includes greeting and thanks, and Brown and Levinson's (1987) idea of politeness in illocutionary acts were employed as a framework. According to our data, the traders in Pantai Matras used more semi-polite beginnings but more polite closings to wrap up their deals. A more thorough examination of the data shows that this politeness was frequently offered in reaction to the visitor's requests. Even though our results are not as significant as others, we think they will be helpful to researchers and practitioners because they show that professional communication skills must be taught and used when having transactions in Pantai Matras.

Abstract

This community service program entitled “Basic English for Fishermen’s Product Marketing in Baskara Bhakti Village: Export Readiness through Beginner-Level English Proficiency” was designed to address the limited English competence among local fishermen that hinders access to international markets. Using a participatory approach involving the village head and fishermen groups, the program developed learning materials in the form of a Basic English module, conversation worksheets, and short instructional videos tailored to the context of seafood product marketing. The implementation showed that fishermen were able to practice simple sentences such as introducing products, describing quality, stating prices, and responding to buyers’ questions, which significantly enhanced their confidence in using English. Positive responses from both participants and community partners confirmed the relevance of the materials, and indirect benefits were also observed as family members, including women and children, engaged with the learning process. The strengths of this program lie in its contextual design, accessibility, and participatory method, while weaknesses include limited vocabulary coverage, short training duration, digital infrastructure constraints, and lack of long-term evaluation. Overall, the program proved to be a strategic solution to support fishermen’s readiness for export by equipping them with practical English skills for global communication
