Abstract

Interactional feedback as a means of helping second language (L2) learners to focus on form has received increased attention recently in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). Moreover, feedback is also considered as an effective way to help the students improve their ability in learning L2. Subsequently, as teachers encourage use of the target language in their classrooms, they must consider how to provide feedback to their students concerning the accuracy of their utterances. This paper attempts to reveal the answers for the research question which is “what does interactional feedback mean to the students?” There are two participants who were willing to share their lived experiences. The data are in a form of texts and gathered from an in-depth interview in which the data are then extracted to be the themes for the discussion. For the themes, there are two major themes appear in the study namely motivation and self-improvement. Motivation was the first theme that appeared from the study. The comments and feedback could motivate the participants to perform better in their next speaking practices. Additionally, motivation indeed becomes one of the positive effects which could make the participants feel motivated in improving their speaking ability through the feedback from their lecturers. Self-improvement became the second major theme from the study. Self-improvement was derived from the participants’ consciousness when they encountered the mistakes that they often committed when speaking. Contextually, the interactional feedback that the participants gained from the lecturer made the participants aware of the mistake that they had committed. Therefore, after gaining the feedbacks from their teacher, they are triggered to improve their performance in the next speaking assignments.

Abstract

Inspired by personal experiences during the study time in the Graduate Program in English Language Studies (ELS) Sanata Dharma University Yogyakarta, this research focused mainly on investigating the ELS students’ lived experience of project-based learning implemented by the ELS lecturers. This study employed hermeneutic phenomenology since it described and interpreted the meanings of ELS students lived experience. The participants of this study were the three ELS students considered to be illuminating from the three different streams batch of 2015. In this study we used one-on-one in depth interview to gain the data. The findings of this study consisted of four prefigured meanings and two emergent meanings namely a) authentic learning, b) learner autonomy, c) cooperative learning, d) multiple intelligences, e) understanding others, and f) personal development. The findings of this study gave implications not only to the ELS students and lecturers, but also to the audience. Lastly, recommendations were also addressed to the ELS students as their habit formation, to the ELS lecturers as their inputs to give more feedbacks to their students, and to the future researchers. Keywords: Lived experience, project-based learning.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal teachers' reflections in teaching English during the pre-pandemic period and during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, a teacher's English instruction might have focused more on direct interaction in the classroom, with an emphasis on oral communication and group activities. Teachers can easily provide real-time feedback to students, facilitate live discussions, and provide open-ended materials directly. However, during the pandemic, English language teaching has faced new challenges by maintaining distance learning. By using the theoretical concept of Baker (1996) regarding Self-Reflection combined with Kentnor (2015) regarding the Online Learning System, it becomes the right composition for implementing learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic. This study uses a qualitative method. The results of this research reveal about (1) Teacher Reflections in Teaching English in the Pre-Pandemic Period (2) Teacher Reflections in Teaching English During the Pandemic. This research is important as a reflection that can be used by teachers and lecturers in the teaching and learning process before and during the pandemic.

Abstract

Proficiency in the practice of interpreting refers to one’s ability to effectively translate a source language into a target language while ensuring the meaning is conveyed accurately. This research specifically focused on the use of Indonesian as the source language and English as the target language, which is crucial in the tourism industry, especially in Sungailiat City. This research used a survey-based approach and uses supporting theory as a research methodology to investigate the effectiveness of translation practices from Indonesian to English. Data collection includes interviews and observations. The primary data obtained was analyzed to reveal the challenges faced by tour guides or shoreline security officers in implementing these practices, as well as the potential opportunities available to them through continued implementation. The results of this research can increase the awareness of professionals directly involved in the tourism industry and provide educational insights for tour guides and local communities managing tourist attractions. Additionally, it can contribute to improving the skills of guides, thereby expanding their knowledge to encourage socio-economic growth in the Sungailiat tourism sector.

Abstract

This paper examines the presence of Chinese descendants on Bangka Island, focusing on assimilating the Khek language, spoken by the Hakka community, by studying the hybridization across four sub-districts: Pangkalpinang, Sungaliat, Muntok, and Belinyu. Using the qualitative methods, including interviews and recordings of daily conversations, this paper analyzes the linguistic choices and semantic shifts in Khek by discussing the characteristics of the Khek language. This study has two main objectives: (1) to identify the lexical patterns and meaning of the Khek language in everyday use, and (2) to explore the socio-historical factors influencing Khek’s development on Bangka island. Findings show significant language assimilation between Khek and Bangka Malay, shaped by the socio-historical interactions. This research contributes to understanding the linguistic assimilation process and the mutual influence of speech communities in a multilingual context, shedding light on the mutual influence of language communities and the preservation of linguistic identity amid assimilation.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a scaffolding-based English coursebook for 3rd-grade elementary students in Indonesia. The research was conducted in response to the challenges faced by teachers and young learners in , English language education, such as lack of contextualized materials and student engagement. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving a needs assessment, coursebook design, and a quasi-experimental study with 120 students from two schools in Purwokerto, Central Java. The experimental group used the scaffolding-based coursebook, while the control group used existing materials. The results revealed significant improvements in English proficiency scores for both groups, with the experimental group outperforming the control group. Qualitative data from classroom observations and interviews indicated increased student engagement, motivation, and positive perceptions of the scaffolding approach in the experimental group. The findings suggest that the scaffolding-based coursebook effectively enhanced young learners' English language proficiency and engagement compared to existing materials. The study highlights the potential of scaffolding techniques in designing contextualized language learning materials and supporting English language education in Indonesia. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects and applicability of scaffolding-based coursebooks across different grade levels and regions.

Abstract

This research mainly focused on discovering the application of literary theory in literary texts. Literary theories and literary texts were the same as two sides of a coin. They could not be separated or segregated. In addition, they both also helped people or the readers understand the application of them. However, even though literary theory and literary texts were interrelated or interconnected, they both shared different concept. Literary theory referred to on this basis, a set of assumptions or principles in which they could be used to explain, criticize, and interpret particular aspects, situations, or conditions in literary texts. Whereas, literary text, to some extent, referred to a created story in which it was based on people’s experience such as novels, poems, and many others. The method used in this research was the library research or library studies in which the data were gathered through reading literatures and taking important notes. The primary and secondary data were used to analyze the study. The primary source was some of the literary theories in the literary works such as novel and short stories. The secondary source was gathered through reading journals, articles, and books. The findings of the study referred to four main theories, namely, structuralism, post-structuralism, post-modernism, and psychoanalysis. The application of structuralism theory in literary texts gave some insights which showed that although a thing had its structure that shape or form, it is still standing a single unity. It also happened to the literary works. Even though a literary work had its structure, it was still seen as a unity eventually. The application of post-structuralism theory showed that in reading a literary text, one might had different interpretation toward it. One might say A, but the other would probably say B. However, it was rather difficult to have the same interpretation as what the author of the texts really wanted to say without referring it to another related source to help people understand and be able to do certain analysis. The application of post-colonialism theory in literary text showed that the post-colonial theorist entered the literary texts or works through a specific critical lens, or a specific way of reading them. That critical lens, post-colonial theory or post-colonialism, asked the reader to analyze and explain the effects that colonization and imperialism, or the extension of power into other nations, had on people and nations. The last theory, the application of psychoanalysis theory in literary text showed that this theory was not the only theory that people could use to analyze or criticize the characters in literary works or texts. It might be possible if one wanted to use this theory to reveal what is intended by the author or what the characters’ motivations were. Key words: Literary theory, literary text.
