Abstract

Background: Teenagers are influenced by their surroundings, and this may also include their sexual behavior or societal responses to this type of behavior. It is important to understand the complexity of religious mandates and sociocultural disapproval of premarital sex from the perspectives of healthcare professionals. Methods: This qualitative study aimed to explore the influence of religion on healthcare professional’s beliefs toward providing sexual and reproductive health information and treatment. An interview topic guide was used in the in-depth interview of 32 healthcare professionals in several health clinics in Malaysia. The data were transcribed and entered into the NVivo 11 software. Thematic analysis was used to evaluate the data. Results: The findings show that some healthcare professionals positively incorporated Islamic beliefs into sexual health education session but excluded the contraception information. This study also highlights the strategies used by healthcare professionals (discourse on risk, being selective, maintaining their own honor) when providing sexual health services to teenagers. Conclusion: These findings revealed how religion perpetuates a “moral” approach in the provision of sexual health services that potentially affects teenagers’ access to healthcare.

Abstract

Background: Parents have an important role in delivering sexuality education to their children. However, Asian parents are reluctant to discuss sexual matters with their children owing to the sensitivity of the topic and their lack of sexual health knowledge. This study aimed to examine Malaysian parents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices in providing sexuality education to their children. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was used to conduct this cross-sectional study featuring 200 Malaysian parents. Descriptive and univariate analyses were performed using Statistical Package for Social Study (SPSS) version 23.0. Results: Among the majority (79.5%) of the parents having good knowledge, 82% agreed that sexuality information helps their children recognize and avoid sexual abuse. Most (91%) of them perceived that they have good practices in providing sexuality education to their children. There is no association between the parents’ gender and their knowledge of sexuality education. However, there are no links between age groups, educational level, and the parents’ knowledge of sexuality education. Conclusion: Malaysian parents believe that sexuality education should be provided by the parents to their children at an early age. Hence, a comprehensive sexuality education program for parents consisting of sufficient information, motivation, and strategies, is needed to develop children’s sexual literacy.

Abstract

The Malaysian COVID-19 hospital admission rate and the intensive care wards usage are now declining as the health service system enters a stage of recovery in the endemic phase. This study aimed to explore the barriers to and facilitators of infection prevention and control (IPC) compliance among staff nurses and nursing students and to observe their IPC compliance when attending to the patients in the respective wards. Qualitative study using in-depth interviews was conducted with staff nurses and the nursing students as primary data collection methods and supported with direct observation in the wards. A total of 21 staff nurses and 14 undergraduate nursing students from multiple wards were purposively sampled from April to December 2022. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis in Nvivo software. Four key themes were emerged in this study such as the partcipants i) Narrating IPC compliance; ii) IPC compliance adherence; iii) Perceived barriers for noncompliance to IPC; iv) Empowering staff nurses and nursing students on IPC compliance. The study findings served as key evidence for the hospital top management and the nursing faculty in planning the strategies to improve the IPC training and monitoring by empowering staff nurses and nursing students at their teaching hospitals.
