Abstract

This study aimed to obtain the ultrasound image of preovulatory follicle growth in gayo mares to predict the ovulation time. This study used three Gayo mares and one gayo stallion for teaser aged 5-10 years and weighed 200-250 kg. Preovulatory follicle growth was observed using transrectal ultrasonography which was performed when the dominant follicle size was ≥ 3.5 cm. Observations were made for 3 consecutive estrous periods on gayo mares at relatively the same time. The absence of previous follicular appearance and the presence of hypoechoic area in the same ovary indicate that ovulation has occurred. The result revealed that the diameter of preovulatory follicle of gayo mares was 4.02±0.32 to 5.05±0.04 cm. There was no significant follicle growth in the last 48 hours before ovulation and the preovulatory follicle shape altered from spherical to pearshape. Many small follicles (2 cm in diameter) were observed in peripheral area of the ovary indicated the recruitment of follicles which form the first follicular wave. To conclude, the alteration in the size and pearshape of preovulatory follicle and the recruitment of small follicles can be used as a marker to determine the time of ovulation on gayo mares.

Abstract

  This research aimed to determine the accuracy of the progesterone test kit for milk and blood as means of early pregnancy diagnosis in Ettawa cross goats (PE). Five lactating PE goats were used in this study and were synchronized with PGF2α intramuscularly. The result is that all goats showed a sigh of estrus. Four goats were mated naturally, while one other was not mated. The determination of day-0 was when the females were standing heat. Early pregnancy diagnosis using dairy cow test strips performed 18-22 days after mating or post-estrus. The accuracy of the diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasound examination on day 35 after mating/post estrus. Diagnosis using the milk progesterone kit showed negative results for five days of examination in all goats, whereas using the blood progesterone kit showed positive results in four goats. When confirmed, using ultrasound showed one goat was diagnosed as not pregnant, and four other goats were diagnosed pregnant. It can be concluded that the use of progesterone dairy cow pregnancy test strip kits is effectively used to diagnose early pregnancy in PE goats with high accuracy in blood samples (100%) and low accuracy in milk samples (20%).

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan memberikan wawasan dan pengetahuan kepada peternak tentang observasi berahi yang benar sehingga ternak tepat untuk di IB dengan tingkat keberhasilan kebuntingan yang tinggi. Kegiatan ini dilakukan pada 2 kelompok ternak di Desa Lam Ilie Tengoh Kecamatan Indrapuri, Aceh Besar yaitu kelompok ternak Mandiri dan Jeumpa Kemireu. Pelaksanaan pengabdian dilakukan dalam 5 kegiatan utama: 1. Tutorial tentang sinkronisasi dan observasi berahi pada ternak, 2. Pelaksanaan sinkronisasi berahi pada sapi dan kambing, 3. Pelatihan observasi berahi, 4. Aplikasi IB pada hewan ternak, 5. Pengenalan dan diagnosa kebuntingan menggunakan ultrasonografi. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah telah terbentuknya kader peternak yang terampil dalam mengobservasi berahi pada ternak sehingga tepat pada waktunya untuk dikawinkan, dan diperolehnya hasil positif bunting yang lebih besar (70%) pada ternak yang di IB dengan waktu observasi berahi yang akurat, sehingga dapat meningkatkan populasi jumlah ternak di Desa Lam Ilie Teungoh. Hal ini telah berdampak terhadap peningkatkan sumber pendapatan ekonomi masyarakat desa tersebut.
