Abstract

This  article  examines  gender  discrimination,  and  investigates  the  relation  between  gender  and social  class  relation  experienced  by  the  main  female  character,  Carla,  in  the  short  story  entitled Bob Darling by Carolyn Cooke. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative applying the  concept  of  gender  discrimination  by  Mansour  Fakih  and  the  concept  of  intersectionality  by Kimberlé Crenshaw about the connection of multiple dimensions, such as gender and class in making discrimination. This study aims to find how the main female character that lives in the patriarchal culture is depicted in the story. Moreover, it is to show how social segregation strengthens the gender discrimination.  Gender  discrimination  is  unjust  treatments  and  assumptions  against  someone, particularly based on a person’s sex that leads to the role that he or she should play in the society. The  different  role  however,  leads  to  the  harm  and  the  loss  of  person’s  right  in  life  especially  for woman who lives in patriarchal culture. The results show that stereotype, subordination and violence against woman are experienced by the main female character in the society as the effect of gender discrimination. Then, social class as a division of individual classes based on levels of individual’s position in society that can be determined by wealth, education, occupation, and others has a part in gender discrimination. When the woman is on lower class, she has less power and authority so that  it  makes  a  stronger  discrimination  against  her.  In  conclusion,  in  the  patriarchal  culture,  the discrimination against woman is not only influenced by the gender itself, but also the social class.DOI: 10.15408/insaniyat.v1i2.4345

Abstract

This  article  discusses  the  identity  construction  of  a  Jordanian  Muslim  woman  through  the  main female character named Najwa reflected in Willow Trees Don’t Weep novel (2014) by Fadia Faqir. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. It is supported by the concept of identity by Stuart Hall and that of patriarchy to analyze the text. The aim of the study is to point out how Najwa, as a Jordanian Muslim woman who lives in a strong patriarchal culture without male figure in her family,  constructs  her  identity,  particularly  when  travelling  to  some  different  countries  including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and England just to find her father. The way Najwa Lives in a new country, where she interacts with new people and be immersed in new culture, has an immense impact on her.  Subsequently  self-identity  construction  is  definitely  inevitable.  Here,  Najwa  herself  strives  to negotiate  and  articulate  her  identity  through  her  appearance  and  behavior,  especially  in  Islamic practices and rituals. Consequently, the negotiation and articulation turn out to be the two major things  in  her  self-identity  construction.  Culture,  however,  becomes  a  crucial  mean  to  identity. Different culture represents different identity, and it keeps changing relaying on place where she lives.DOI: 10.15408/insaniyat.v1i1.4169

Abstract

This  study  is  aimed  at  finding  gender  relations  between  male  and  female  character  as  they  are depicted  in  Willow  Trees  Don’t  ’Weep  (2014)  novel  written  by  Fadia  Faqir.  This  study  employs descriptive qualitative method on feminist literary criticism as a theory to find and reveal gender issues. The text is analyzed by using feminist criticism “woman as reader” to give the evaluation and  interpretation  on  how  woman  writes  about  woman.  The  result  shows  that  there  are  three significant points in which gender relation in patriarchal culture is portrayed in the novel. They are male  domination,  discrimination  towards  women,  and  violence  against  women.  The  results  were evaluated  by  examining  female  character’s  condition  in  a  patriarchal  society  through  woman’s point of view based on her social life and experiences. Moreover, the country where women live is influenced the gender relation. Jordan in this case, has the strongest patriarchal system compared to Pakistan, Afghanistan, and London (the countries where Najwa lived while searching for her father).DOI: 10.15408/insaniyat.v2i1.6586

Abstract

Masculinity is recognized as a social value that regulates how a man should or should not behave. Those who do not meet the ideal characteristics such as strong, powerful, dominant, aggressive, and others, in some circumstances, will be considered as toxic masculinity. This article aims to explore how masculinity traits and toxic masculinity are presented in a short film directed by Michael Rohrbaugh entitled American Male (2016). This film looks at the gender norms which are emerged in a society by showing a muscle-up man who portrays masculine standard traits. The main character in the film is portrayed as a man who is strong, competitive, and violent. The method used is a qualitative content analysis based on the concept of masculinity by Janet Saltzman Chafetz. The results show that American Male is a medium used to convey how masculine norms has ruined the society. As it is socially and culturally constructed, men must be engaged with it. Men must be masculine. Even more, men who do not fulfill the traits are considered either losers or gays. Toxic masculinity subsequently forces men to fulfill masculinity. The traits are socially regressive and lead to violence, patriarchy, domination, and homophobia. In conclusion, the main character becomes depressed, violent, and stereotyped as a result of toxic masculinity.

Abstract

This study is important due to the fact that Jakarta urban society keep consuming commodities without any consideration on what should and shouldn’t be consumed. The development of cultural capitalism in postmodern era has led to a serious problem on how consumer behaviour is intentionally constructed in a such way and seems to be natural. In fact, this is caused by a false consciousness which is placed in the human mind through capitalism in Indonesia consumer culture. False consciousness in not defined as a disability of human mind to distinguish right and false, but the consciousness is counterfeited by a certain mechanism, so that human reserves wicked  information through a reality.

Abstract

This research aims to show how women’s bodies and their functions shape the role of women in dystopian society reflected in Blade Runner 2049. Cyborgfeminism theory by Donna Haraway and postgenderism theory by James Hughes and George Dvorsky with a qualitative method are used to analyze the corpus. The results show that the role of women in the dystopian society functions as a human’s reproduction while women’s body is viewed as sexual commodities and valued for its sexual pleasure. In conclusion, this research can be used as a foreshadowing of how women and their roles will be in a dystopian society where the near-future capabilities of Artificial Intelligence and robotics may provide men as the superior gender which can dominate over the bodies and existence of women.

Abstract

This paper discusses the power relation and gender in the novel Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed (2018). This study focuses on the four main characters, Amal, Abu, Jawad, and Baji, in which  Abu, Amal ‘s father, has a relationship that puts her as a subordinate one as well as Jawad, who has the power from his economic aspect. The restriction experienced by a female character, Amal, became a gender issue regarding the oppression of women, which must be surrendered to certain power circumstances. This research explores the power relations between female and male characters and their effect on gender. This study uses a qualitative method and applies Michel Foucault's theory of power relations and the concept of gender. The results show that Amal’s resistance is echoed in the desire to destroy the power structure that put Jawad as the highest authority holder. Amal prioritizes resistance to free her choice in her gender identity, and power relations are obliged to change with the resistance. Power in this discourse installs itself and produces real material effects, which social power structure and the prescribed gender norms also affect the relationship between characters. Power relations exist as the main female character, Amal has a certain relationship with the other main male characters and another female character. The power comes from the relation then brings oppression toward women. Power is compiled, established, and realized through certain knowledge and discourse. In addition, Amal’s appearance, which represents her gender identity, also indicates resistance toward the oppression she experienced. To conclude, subordination and oppression toward women are undeniable, as men are socially and culturally designed to be powerful. Meanwhile, women are powerless.
