Abstract

Abstract

The ability to recognize phonological patterns is essential for comprehending language and word formation. The issues are brought on by the absence of an English sound in other languages, particularly in Indonesia. This study looked into the connection between oral language competency and phonological awareness in adult English language learners. Although additional in-depth studies on the relationship between phonological awareness and oral language ability in adult EFL learners have not been widely conducted, this is based on a curiosity about whether phonological awareness still has a relationship with it. Researchers employed a correlation design and quantitative approaches. Sixty-two respondents from the third-year STKIP PGRI Jombang students in the English Education department program participated in this study. Purposive approach was employed to choose the responders. The information is derived from the midterm exam assignments. The phonology and speaking lecturer created the tool for a semester four course on academic settings. With the use of SPSS version 25, non-parametric Spearman's rho was used to examine the data.According to the outcomes of the data analysis, the value of the 2-tailed sig. is 0.463, which is greater than 0.05.Therefore, the researchers draw the conclusion that there is no meaningful relationship between spoken language ability and phonological awareness. They assumed that the outcome was due to the disparity in emphasis between the speaking test scoring criteria and the course materials for Speaking for Academic Setting.

Abstract

Accommodation theorists argue that speakers use different varieties of language to express solidarity with or social distance from their interlocutors (Howard Giles et al, 1991; Mukenge &Chimbarange, 2012). The studies of code-switching nowadays use various medias such as novels, movies, or short videos. In this research, the researchers uses movie to analysed the code-switching used. The purposes of this research are to find out the linguistic types of code-switching used by the characters in Eat, Pray, Love Movie and to explain about how the characters’ use of code-switching to express solidarity. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative because the data taken by the researchers is in the form of dialogue in Eat, Pray, Love Movie. The source of the data is Eat, Pray, Love Movie by Ryan Murphy released in 2010. Data collection was done by downloading the Eat, Pray, love Movie transcription, watching and coding the data using Nvivo. Data analysis is done by analysed the data in Domain Table, Taxonomy Table, and Componential Table. The findings of this research shows that there are 30 data of code-switching which divided into 9 of Inter-Sentential Switching, 11 of Intra-Sentential Switching, and 10 of Tag Switching. Then, from the total 30 data of code-switching there are 14 data which express solidarity. These data are divided into 2 of Switching in Situational Change, 3 of Switching as a Signal of Group Membership or Shared Ethnicity, and 9 of Switching because of Participants Identity or Relationship.

Abstract

Abstract This study discusses the determination of the direction of the Qibla using the azimuth of the cumulonimbus cloud as an alternative to determining the direction of the Qibla in the perspective of the integration of astronomy and meteorology. This research is motivated by the importance of the direction of the qibla in prayer and the need for alternative methods of determining the direction of the qibla when modern tools or astronomical observations cannot be used optimally. Therefore, this study aims to find out: 1) how to determine the direction of the qibla using the azimuth of the cumulonimbus cloud; 2) How is the accuracy of the azimuth of the cumulonimbus cloud in determining the direction of the Qibla. Cumulonimbus clouds are chosen because they have the characteristics of vertical growth and a specific direction of movement that can be visually observed in the atmosphere. This study uses the library research method with a normative sharia and descriptive approach. Data were obtained through literature reviews in the form of books, journals, scientific articles, and relevant sources that discuss the direction of the qibla, astronomy, meteorology, azimuth, and characteristics of cumulonimbus clouds. The analysis was carried out by examining the relevance between the concept of azimuth in astronomy and the movement pattern of cumulonimbus clouds in meteorology. The results of the study show that the azimuth of cumulonimbus clouds can theoretically be used as an alternative indicator in determining the direction of the qibla, especially when the position of the sun and other celestial bodies cannot be observed directly. However, the accuracy level of this method is influenced by atmospheric conditions, wind direction, cloud stability, and the geographical position of the observer. Therefore, this method cannot replace the main astronomical method, but it can be used as an alternative approach based on natural phenomena. This study shows the relevance between astronomy and meteorology in the development of adaptive and contextual Qibla direction determination methods. The implications in this study need to be positioned as a supporting alternative in the analysis of the falak, while the astronomical method that has a better level of precision, stability, and validity of measurements remains the main foundation in determining the direction of the qibla.
