Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify higher order thinking skills (HOTS) among Malay language (ML) teachers through a lesson study. Two aspects were explored in order to answer the research questions, namely the nurturing of HOTS and the teaching attitude towards the implementation of the lesson study at school. Qualitative research is the research design used by the researchers. A total of seven ML teachers acting as participants in the research. Information is obtained through triangulation methods which cover interviews, observations and analysis of documents. The data interviews were analysed and transcribed verbatimally with study participants. The findings showed that there is a deepening of teacher’s HOTS through a variety of student learning activities during teaching. The participants in the study were positive and prepared for study of the lesson. Study lessons would be more effective if the workload of the teacher is decreased. Meeting time between teaching staff involved in the study of lessons should be included in the teaching schedule. The findings of this study are therefore important to consider the development of HOTS, which can be used by all teachers in teaching to make learning more relevant to 21st century learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe: 1) the results of the pre-test of prophetic short story reading skills; 2) the learning process of prophetic short story reading skills using innovative strategies based on Google Forms integrated with online journal scientific articles; 3) the results of the post-test of prophetic short story reading skills; 4) the role of innovative strategies in improving prophetic short story reading skills. This study uses a quantitative method through a single short case study through a quasi-experiment on new students of the Language and Arts Education Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in the 2024/2025 academic year. The study population was 33 students who took the pre-test, learning activities, and post-test. 31 students were designated as samples. Pre-test and post-test data on prophetic short story reading skills were collected using test instruments. Learning procedure data were collected using observation guidelines. Pre-test and post-test data were each analyzed using a one-sample t-test. Pre-test data analysis used a relatively low mean expectation while post-test data analysis used a relatively high mean expectation. The comparison of pre-test and post-test data was analyzed using a paired sample t-test procedure to determine the role of innovative strategies in improving prophetic short story reading skills. The results of the study: 1) the pre-test mean was only 39.87 (49.84%); 2) the learning procedure was carried out according to plan; 3) the post-test mean was 64.97 (81.21%: A); 4) innovative strategies were able to improve prophetic short story reading skills.

Abstract

In ensuring an effective and successful teaching session, teachers must be wise in selecting teaching approaches that meet the needs of students in this age of information evolution. The thematic approach is one of the methods that offers engaging and realistic learning. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to explore teachers’ understanding of the thematic approach in the Malay language subject for primary schools. This qualitative study used a case study approach, specifically a multi-location case study. The study participants consisted of 5 Malay language teachers from 5 primary schools located in 5 different states in Malaysia. Data collection methods included interviews, observations, and document analysis, with the data analyzed thematically using Nvivo14 software. The findings of the study show that Malay language teachers are able to describe the features of the thematic approach in detail, indicating a strong understanding of the thematic approach. The results also show that Malay language teachers are capable of effectively applying the thematic approach in their teaching and learning sessions. This proves that primary school Malay language teachers are well-prepared in terms of understanding the implementation of the thematic approach in schools. In conclusion, empowering teaching and learning through the thematic approach can ensure the effective delivery of knowledge and language skills. Furthermore, to enhance the application of the thematic approach in improving teachers’ pedagogical practices, future studies could explore the effectiveness of the thematic approach in both teaching and student learning.
