Abstract

Collaboration between craftsmen and product designers is one of the solutions for sustainable development of IKM products. Craftsmen need to be introduced to the creative process in producing new products. One that can be applied is Design Thinking. This process is considered in accordance with the way the craftsman works which generally "learning by doing" and not theoretical. Design Thinking process introduced in a workshop activity. The process of finding ideas begins by stimulating empathy to produce new ideas that are different from what they have been doing so far. Through this workshop several solutions were produced in the form of prototypes. This activity also produces a better work pattern that is more creative and productive in generating new ideas. The usage of story-telling in expressing ideas or thoughts is also preferebly and effective as a medium of discussion among craftsmen.

Abstract

Abstract

This research is an evaluation of the learning of the Design Thinking course. This evaluation aims not only to improve the quality of the curriculum and learning process, but also to find ways to strengthen the interdisciplinary approach so that learning is more easily understood by students outside of product design. This research was conducted through a survey using a questionnaire to assess the attractive, challenging, and beneficial aspects of learning, as well as students' understanding of the principles of human-centeredness and collaboration. The results show that the product design discipline has popular and challenging materials, such as ideation with brainstorming and prototyping stages. This indicates good acceptance of learning materials that are not too focused on this discipline. Students feel that this learning is relevant to career development. This research recommends improving teaching materials and methods according to the needs of the world of work and increasing active involvement in group collaboration. These results also strengthen the scientific contribution and role of the Design Thinking course as a distinctive feature of faculty graduatesKeywords:Design Thinking; Learning Evaluation; Product Design

Abstract

AbstractThis Community Service Program (PKM) centers on product design mentorship for Jepara’s Furniture industry through the Jepara Design Collection (JDC) initiative. The program is a collaboration between the Indonesian Furniture Designers Association (HDMI) and the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Industry Association (HIMKI) Jepara, aiming to strengthen local industry capacity in creating original and competitive furniture products. The activities covered participant selection, industry visits, collaborative design development, prototype production, and a final exhibition at the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX) 2025. In total, 12 designers and 12 Furniture companies participated actively. The program outcomes include improved understanding among local producers of the strategic role of design, stronger partnerships between designers and manufacturers, and the creation of new furniture pieces that reflect Jepara’s local identity. Despite time constraints and coordination challenges, JDC has proven effective in enhancing innovation capacity and offers a replicable model for sustainable collaboration between designers and small- to medium-scale furniture industries. Abstract

This study aims to discover how design-oriented community interventions can enable women artisans to transform plastic waste into increased economic value. The study was performed using a participatory methodology with Komunitas Pengrajin Rasyid, a collective of female artisans in Setu, Cipayung, East Jakarta. The program included five phases: socializing, training, technology implementation, mentorship, and sustainability planning. Data collection methodologies include observation, interviews, and documentation. Findings indicate that the implementation of suitable technologies, specifically the gas oven and pressing machine, markedly advancement from earlier single material weaving techniques, demonstrating the potential of material fusion to improve product stability, durability, and aesthetic value. The community developed three novel product prototypes; coasters, tableware holders, and tissue boxes exhibiting improved durability and aesthetic appeal. The introduction of clearer organizational structures, bookkeeping processes, and visual branding improved managerial and marketing capabilities. The results demonstrate that even minor technology and design modifications can yield significant social, economic, and environmental effects, hence enhancing the viability of community-based circular organizations. Future research should focus on longitudinal market testing of the new visual branding to assess its effectiveness, alongside consumer perception studies that evaluate how recycled products are interpreted in different market segments.
