Abstract

This paper studies the theoretical structure of financing for Islamic philanthropy in the form of waqf or endowment by looking at the past and present forms of waqf. Waqf is expected to play a more important role to tackle current social and educational issues, where financial sustainability has become one of the greatest challenges faced by waqf institutions. Using the content and thematic analysis approaches, this paper reviews the practice of successful waqf institutions and summarizes the features that are significant to a successful waqf fundraising and management. The paper analyses three models that are suitable for innovation and management of waqf fundraising: Venture Philanthropy of Waqf Model (VPWM), Value-Based Capital Model of Waqf (VBCM), and Social Enterprise Waqf Fund Model (SEWF). The paper then investigates the possibility of applying the Management by Objectives (MBO) framework to improve the overall management of waqf institutions. The discussions are hoped to be able to contribute towards developing a better fundraising and management of waqf institutions.

Abstract

Background: The degradation of character among students has become a critical issue in many educational settings, especially within Islamic schools, where moral and spiritual development is paramount. Character education, particularly in religious contexts, plays a crucial role in shaping students into responsible and ethical individuals. Purpose: This study examines the strategies employed by Madrasah heads in Bandung to develop the religious character of their students, addressing the challenges posed by the ongoing degradation of character among youth. The cultivation of religious character is central to creating morally responsible and spiritually grounded individuals. This research aims to explore the policy formulation, implementation strategies, and evaluation processes employed by Madrasah leaders to foster religious character development. Method: Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The data analysis followed an interactive model consisting of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. Result: The findings reveal that religious character formation is supported by habituation programs, such as Madrasah literacy, extracurricular activities, Qur’an recitation, prayer routines, and the 5S method (Smile, Greetings, Politeness, Cleanliness, and Orderliness). These activities, alongside regular evaluations, contribute to creating a disciplined and respectful environment. Conclusion: The research highlights the importance of leadership commitment and collaborative efforts in effectively implementing character education, suggesting that a strategic approach to character development can lead to positive changes in student behavior and spiritual growth.

Abstract

This research examines the istijrar contract as a potential solution to the operational and Shariah compliance challenges commonly encountered in murabahah-based financing, particularly in scenarios involving continuous and repeated purchases. Such flexible purchasing arrangements often generate complexities and elevate compliance risks. To address these issues, the study adopts a structured literature review methodology, implemented in three stages. First, it reviews scholarly debates concerning the Shariah compliance of the istijrar contract. Second, it assesses existing global practices. Third, it analyzes Turkish practices and legal regulations, critically examining the discussions and models at each stage to identify the most suitable adaptation for implementation in Türkiye. Key findings highlight the absence of standardized frameworks in both global and Turkish contexts, along with the limited practical application of istijrar in Türkiye’s Islamic banking sector. In response, this research synthesizes these insights to develop a structured and independent istijrar model specifically tailored to the Turkish Islamic banking environment. It is anticipated that this model will enable Islamic banks to more effectively finance customers engaged in production and trade activities, thereby supporting the growth of the real economy.
