Abstract

In Western literary tradition, alienation is a common theme. This theme has been identified since the Shakespearean era. Yet, in Indonesian literary tradition alienation is a novelty. This paper aims at analyzing the emergence as well as the significance of this theme in the Indonesian context. In Western context, alienation occurs within the absence of God or within the materialistic society while in Indonesian context, in this case in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban, it occurs in a strong religious atmosphere. The main character, Anisa experiences alienation caused by the interpretation of religion by patriarchal society. The psychological conflict between religious rules and free will is so intense that the main character is trapped in a deep confusion. Therefore this research is intended to examine how the religious alienation can be explained in Indonesian context. This paper provides the explanation on how this movie—Perempuan Berkalung Sorban—fits into the category of the movie that criticizes religion. The emergence of a new theme in a popular culture mainstream can be seen as a new awareness in Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Contestation of dominant masculinity in Indonesian Popular Culture influenced by the New Order can still be seen in its cinematic production. The legacy of The New Order echoes through themes of state’s violence and masculinity. The Raid: Redemption, as a huge international success, depicting vulgar violence done both by the state and the gangsters is very important to be analyzed. As the form of collective dreams, the contestation of masculinity and violence of the state and the gangster in the movie reflects the real social condition. Through historical perspective the state and the gangster are more like binary opposition; inseparable but opposing each other. The Gangsters became the state’s Frankenstein monster. On one side the state cannot allow the crime the gangsters do, but on the other the state keeps in creating the gangsters to the dirty jobs that state cannot do. Psychoanalytically speaking, their relationship resembles a father and a bad son. Those gangsters are “the son” and the state is “the father”. The effect of the state’s treatment to the gangsters can still be identified long after the down fall of the era that created it.

Abstract

This article aims to compare and investigate the movie Yuni (2021) and He Named Me Malala (2015) in terms of how the sociocultural environment affects the main characters' psychological conditions. Despite the differences in their sociocultural conditions, both characters experience some similarities with the recurring trauma, dissociative effect, and reorientation of consciousness. The phenomena is crucial to investigate because Franz Fanon has attempted to prove that psychoanalysis is not a universally applied theory. The purpose of this study is to find out the form of traumatic feelings experienced by the two main characters and identify how dissociative effects and reorientation of consciousness are presented due to traumatic events. The theory of literary trauma by Caruth is employed as the theory to be used in this research. The impact of Malala's and Yuni's traumatic experiences are significantly different. Yuni tends to have the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), while Malala tends to have a Post Traumatic Growth (PTG). PTSD is regarded as a severe condition that needs expert care to manage and recover from. PTG, on the other hand, describes the positive psychological improvements that certain people may experience after a traumatic occurrence.

Abstract

The two films The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and Doa yang Mengancam (2008) as the representations of Protestant and Muslim communities both demonstrate significant implications toward the dynamics of work ethics. The problem addressed by this comparison of two cinematic works is the influences of two different religious values on personal work ethics. The foundation of comparative literature paradigm is the idea that by studying literary works from various cultural and linguistic contexts, we can better understand how historical and cultural situations form human experiences--in this case, religious work ethics--occur. The aim of this research is to compare the representation of work ethics within the two main characters in the films as influenced by their respective religious values. The theory used for solving the case is Stuart Hall's (1997) representation theory by using the constructivism paradigm (symbolic, image, discursive, and myth function) with qualitative research method. The findings show that Chris, as a Protestant, has higher work ethics than Madrim, a young Muslim, according to Max Weber's Protestant Ethic principles. However, this situation has an impact on the Protestant’s attitude which is more materialistic than that of the Muslim which shows an equality between worldly wealth and good deeds in the afterlife.

Abstract

This research aims to compare and investigate the trauma that affects men's masculinity in two different movies from America and Indonesia. This research compares two male characters who both experienced traumatic experiences but, in contrast, have different masculinities due to the influence of the trauma as well as the socio-cultural context they experienced. The objects of comparison for this research are the character Juno from the movie Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku (2018) and the character Chiron from the movie Moonlight (2016). The two characters share similarities in the causes of trauma, but they express different masculinities. To analyze this research, the comparative literature method, the theory of trauma by Levine (2008) and the theory of masculinity by R.W. Connell (2005) were used. The research results show that social-cultural influences play an important role in dealing with a person's trauma which can ultimately affect their masculinity. Juno does not receive social support from the people around him. He remains in subordinate masculinity. Meanwhile, Chiron, who received social support, experienced a change in his masculinity from subordinate masculinity to hegemonic masculinity.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how gender and narrative correlate to each other. Traditionally speaking, gender is only related to one of the intrinsic aspects, the character, which is usually inside the plot. Although in this short story the narrator is character-bound narrator, the narrator is not in the fabula or plot. The implication is that it can be assumed that gender plays its role. The narrator in this short story obviously gets involved in the contestation of masculinity of the characters. The method of narratology is employed to dig out all of the masculine contestation, among the main characters (Ajo Sidi and Sang Kakek/the Oldman) and the narrator. The result shows that the masculinity of Ajo Sidi belongs to the hegemonic masculinity and the masculinity of the Oldman belongs to the non-hegemonic masculinity. The contestation of masculinity represents the binary opposition between active and passive masculinity. In this respect, the masculinity of the Oldman, which is passive, can be binarized as the feminine rather than masculine one.

Abstract

Identifying the correlation between masculinities and piety in Abidah El-Khalieqy’s Perempuan Berkalung Sorban [A Woman in a Turban] is a way to understand how gender works within a particular culture. As masculinity is not a monolithic concept, the mode of its correlation with piety varies. Based on the analysis of the characters and their characterizations in the novel, it is found that, from the perspective of the female narrator, the practice of piety leads to victimization and oppression of women when it is inscribed with hegemonic masculinity and vice versa. By applying narratology, this research is able to reveal the discursive practices from the combination of masculinities and piety. Khudori is a new kind of character which shares a positive masculinity dreamt by moslem women although his maculinity resembles the non-hegemonic ones. The other kinds of masculinity in this novel that function as a contrast show that the combination of piety and hegemonic masculinity is not desirable. On a structural side, Khudori is created as a part of the structural aspects which serves as a dramatic functionality that fits him best to be a flat character.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Pemerkosaan, Pelaku, Studi Banding, Amerika, Indonesia, Narasi [Although the backgrounds are different - America and Indonesia - such as sociocultural and education levels, the perpetrators of sexual harassment in Audrie & Daisy (2016) and Photocopier (2021) are worth exploring further, with the assumption that first-world texts are different from third-world texts with the discourse of women as subjects and agents. How the shift in narrative focus in the representation of perpetrators of sexual violence from victims to perpetrators, so that the existence of the perpetrators does not become "unidentified is a critical point of view of this study." This qualitative study identifies rape narratives through discourse in the constellation of gender relations between sexual perpetrators and victims or survivors. Comparing the construction of the perpetrator's discourse in the rape narrative with Stuart Hall's theory of representation that examines film narratives and discourses, representations of sociocultural and sexual perpetrators. In Indonesia, male perpetrators, with all their privileges and status, occupy a higher position than female survivors. Perpetrators who are not punished are placed in a higher hierarchy in America. The values of individual autonomy that are upheld in American culture place men in a hegemonic position, while in Indonesia, with its values of social attachment, the narrative is seen as strong in sacrificing women for the benefit of the group. Identifiable discourses not only provide narrative power to rapists but also a sense of not being condemned or sympathetic by the reader.
