Abstract

There is a strong correlation between regional development and economic growth. Regional development is expected to lower regional disparity and poverty rate. This research is conducted to investigate the correlation between (1) economic growth and regional development, (2) poverty rate and regional disparity, and (3) the role of government in regional development with a case study in Sleman Regency. This research utilized both primary data, obtained by conducting interviews with local government and secondary data provided by previous research and National Statistical Bureau (BPS) database. This research utilized an evaluative descriptive approach, combined with the utilization of spatial data visualization. This research shows that economic growth and regional development in Sleman Regency mostly occur in the urbanized area. There is unequal revenue distribution between urbanized and less urbanized areas, with some districts in Sleman Regency lagging behind. The analysis of Williamson's Index also shows that Sleman Regency could be categorized as a region with moderate economic disparity. This research underpins the role of local government as coordinator and facilitator in the regional development process.

Abstract

Every region is characterized by the diversity of natural resources and demographic structure. It causes every region may have different comparative advantages. A region could utilize technology if it has limitations on natural resources. This research, therefore, aims to investigate the role of technology development in enhancing regional development in the Yogyakarta Special Region. This research uses three macro indicators, which are economic growth rate, human development index, and poverty index to measure regional development. Data panel is obtained from 4 regencies and 1 municipality in Yogyakarta from 2014 until 2018. The dataset is then analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling in SmartPLS software. GIS Software is also utilized to depict the spatial effect from the dataset modeling. The analysis result shows that Sleman Regency and Yogyakarta Municipality are regions with a high concentration of technology. Bantul Regency, which is adjacent to those two aforementioned regions, is coming behind regarding the concentration of technology. Meanwhile, Kulon Progo and Gunungkidul Regency are deemed as lagging behind those three Regions in Yogyakarta Special Region in terms of technology concentration. However, as shown by this research, technology development and highly educated human resource would not enhance regional development if it is not in line with the demand for technology from the industrial sector within a region.

Abstract

Regional governance on natural resources located in border region concerns on whether stakeholders’ decisions to interact one with another are influenced by their predetermined and assigned social and functional roles. This relationship between roles and interactions reveals whether stakeholders’ embedded capacity and formal authority (proxied by role of each stakeholder) would result in effective management and governance of border region. The paper aims to illuminate specific roles of stakeholders that influence and/or impede their interactions with other stakeholders. Drawing from the case of Mount Ijen bordering between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso in East Java, we analyze whether stakeholders’ roles and interactions are shaped by the specific characteristics of the area within the Mount Ijen region that lead to the emergence of particular governance mode. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The analysis techniques used are pattern matching and stakeholder. Two significant roles are identified: policy creators and facilitators, of which these two were influenced by physical aspects, institutional arrangements and legal binding concerns.
