Abstract

The flag inscribed with the phrase tauḥīd has been claimed by Jihadist-extremism groups to use the narrative hadith as a representation of the flag of the Prophet Muhammad (Liwā' and Rāyah). This phenomenon inspires researchers to carry out in-depth investigations on the history of the hadith, either through micro analysis (isnād) or macro analysis (matn). The purpose of this investigation is to reveal the status and motive for the existence of the phrase tauḥīd on the Prophet's flag. This research uses a qualitative interpretive study to explore the historical-critical paradigm through isnād-cum-matn approach by Harald Motzki. The findings show that the phrase tauḥīd, which is claimed to be part of the symbol of the Prophet's flag, is only the form of insertion (idrāj) by Ḥayyan bin Ubaidillah as “the real common link”. The deviation was carried out as propaganda against the political contestation between the Abbasiyya dynasty and the Umayya dynasty in Egypt. This study’s results supply a new perspective that the religious symbols used as religious identity are not all based on valid sources. Keywords: Prophet’s Flag, Tauḥīd Phrase, Hadith, Isnād-cum-Matn, Political Religion Symbolic

Abstract

Performances of the Qur’an that appear irrelevant to authoritative interpretation discourses, such as the practise of QS. Yūsuf: 4 by a number of Tiktok users, can occasionally be found on social media. This qualitative study employs a field research design to examine these trends by observing and interviewing five Tiktok users as data sources. The researcher describes how Tiktok users practise QS. Yūsuf/12: 4 and investigates its relationship with the function of the verse’s meaning, as well as analyses the motives and sources of their behaviour using the Qur’an Reception approach. According to the findings of the study, Tiktok users perceive QS. Yūsuf/12: 4 functionally with various practises and utilising a variety of media to obtain submission, obedience, appreciation, and even love from the party he desires. This motivation stems from their understanding of the meaning of the phrase “lī sājidīn” in the verse. They claim that such acceptance refers to various interpretive sources as well as formal and informal teachers. Despite the fact that there is a semantic correlation between practise and the meaning of the verse, the intent, purpose, and message of the Prophet Yusuf's story are not represented in their practise. The rise of social media information has influenced this phenomenon, reinforcing the lack of interpretation literacy. The performance of social media users who are dominated by simplistic theological readings must be coloured by strengthening interpretation literacy and authoritative sources so that the dimension of worship in practising the Qur’an is more scientific and can be developed professionally

Abstract

This article examines the practice of implementing QS. Ṭāhā: 39 using bulu perindu as a medium of attraction in Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, which aims to explore the form of practice, the process of transmission and transformation, and its impact on the function of the Qur'an as a guide (hudan). The method used by the author is a qualitative approach with the living Qur'an method, through observation and interviews. It was found that this practice varies, combining the reading of verses with the use of bulu perindu and water, and is influenced by religious stories. Knowledge is transmitted through families, religious teachers, and social media, while the transformation of this practice is seen in the focus of the verses and additional ritual media. The implications show the complex interaction between the sacred text and local culture sometimes showing quite obvious differences with the meaning of the verses specifically intended. The study recommends the formation of a study council so that the practice of the Qur'an remains in accordance with its function as a guide (hudan), but still respects local culture

Abstract

Violence against women remains an escalating phenomenon and a critical issue in contemporary social development. The Qur’an presents numerous verses that directly and indirectly addresses matters of violence, gender relations, and the protection of women. However, many classical exegetical traditions remain influenced by patriarchal constructs, often producing interpretations that are misaligned with principles of justice and gender equity. This article analyzes the feminist Qur’anic hermeneutics of Badriyah Fayumi concerning verses related to violence against women, particularly QS al-Nisā’ [4]:19, QS al-Nisā’ [4]:34, and QS al-Isrā’ [17]:32. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in library research and content analysis, the study examines Fayumi’s major work, Tubuh, Seksualitas, dan Kedaulatan Perempuan. The findings reveal that Fayumi develops a contextual-feminist interpretive framework centered on Maqāṣid al-Syarīʿah, substantive justice, and women lived experiences. Her exegesis rejects the legitimacy of domestic violence, expands the conceptual boundaries of sexual misconduct, and affirms women’s autonomy as moral agents. Fayumi’s contributions offer a significant foundation for constructing a humanistic and progressive Qur’anic interpretation that aligns with gender equality and ethical integrity. This study argues that feminist tafsīr is not a counter-narrative to religion, but rather a revitalization of the Qur’an’s ethical message aimed at fostering a more just society free from gender-based violence.

Abstract

The application of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah in contemporary fatwa issuance has become an important methodological development in Islamic jurisprudence, particularly in addressing emerging issues in family law, finance, healthcare, technology, and environmental governance. This systematic review evaluates how maqāṣid-based reasoning is applied, justified, and methodologically integrated in contemporary fatwa discourse. A comprehensive search of Semantic Scholar using five search strategies identified studies on maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, fatwa formulation, and contemporary Islamic law. After screening 138 deduplicated records, 90 studies met the inclusion criteria. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection and data extraction, while risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using domain-specific criteria and the GRADE framework. The included studies primarily addressed family law (32%), finance (24%), healthcare (10%), technology (8%), food and ḥalāl (6%), environmental governance (4%), and other issues. Findings indicate that the classical five objectives of maqāṣid—ḥifẓ al-dīn, ḥifẓ al-nafs, ḥifẓ al-ʿaql, ḥifẓ al-nasl, and ḥifẓ al-māl—remain the dominant analytical framework, although recent scholarship increasingly recognises ḥifẓ al-bīʾah (environmental preservation) as an emerging objective. Across jurisdictions, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, and Iran, significant tensions persist between formal legal compliance and substantive ethical objectives, while institutional procedures for implementing maqāṣid-based fatwas remain inconsistent. Although maqāṣid al-sharīʿah demonstrates substantial adaptability to contemporary legal challenges, methodological standardisation across fatwa institutions is still limited (very low certainty of evidence). The review recommends developing harmonised methodological guidelines and strengthening institutional coordination to improve the consistency, transparency, and effectiveness of future fatwa formulation.

Abstract

The contemporary ecological crisis is increasingly understood not merely as physical degradation but as a crisis of relation and meaning with measurable psychological consequences. Scholarship on ecological ḥadīṡ has largely remained within juridical-normative or thematic-ethical registers, whereas ecopsychology has developed within a predominantly secular horizon; the two rarely meet. This article proposes and applies an integrative framework, termed Eco-Psycho-Sunnah, which reads the inner objective (al-maqṣid al-nafsī) embedded in classical ḥadīṡ commentary alongside contemporary ecopsychological constructs. Employing a qualitative library-based design and a three-step reading procedure of takhrīj, commentarial reading (qirā’ah sharḥiyyah), and complementary juxtaposition (muqābalah takāmuliyyah), the study analyses six ṣaḥīḥ ecological hadiths across four functional clusters, namely regenerative, conservational, protective, and relational. The results show that classical commentaries, although framed juridically, already encode orientations toward meaning, self-regulation, tranquillity, and compassion that converge with the constructs of meaning in life, self-regulation, restorative experience, and connectedness to nature. The study argues that ecopsychology is not an alien theory imposed upon the Sunnah but a contemporary vocabulary for an inner objective already latent within the commentarial tradition.
