Abstract

This study aims to determine the process of acculturation of customs, traditions, language, and culinary between Sundanese and Minangkabau tribes in Padang City. The research method used is the historical method through four stages, namely first, heuristics, namely the stage of collecting data in the form of documents or books, articles, journals and interviews. Second, source criticism is testing data by conducting internal and external criticism of data from various sources. Third, interpretation, which is the interpretation of data so that it becomes a meaningful fact. The last stage is historical writing in the form of a thesis. The results show that cultural acculturation includes aspects of language, traditions, food and clothing. This acculturation is supported by marriage between ethnicities, economic relations, similarities in beliefs and views of life resulting in unity. The unity is maintained by individual cultural agents (Sundanese cultural activists in Padang City and groups (Paguyuban Warga Sunda Sumatera Barat, local government, ethnic Minang). The cultural activists agreed to create peace in everyday life according to their respective roles and positions, so that Sundanese culture has social engineering that can build harmony in Padang City.

Abstract

This study discusses the morphology changes of Pekanbaru City during the two decades of the Dutch colonial era (1919-1942).  This study had used historical research methods with a city morphology perspective. The stages had been heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. During that time, Pekanbaru had been developed by the Dutch Colonial Government as an administrative center and trading center. In order to develop that function, the Dutch Colonial Government had built a rubber plantation as a trading commodity at the Pekanbaru Port, which was on the banks of the Siak River. They had also built infrastructure, educational, medical, recreation facilities, etc., so that this city had become attractive to urbanites, resulting in an increase in population. Therefore, a new area of the city had been built to the south so that a morphological transformation had occurred in that city. Thus, in 1919-1942, Pekanbaru had become the administrative center and trade center to support the surrounding plantations.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the condition of religious practices in Minangkabau in the early 20th century through the works of HAMKA. This study uses a historical method approach. Literature review is conducted to obtain primary and secondary sources. From the literature study, books by Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah and other related writings related to the two figures related to the research theme were obtained. HAMKA criticized the practice of tarekat that did not conform to the teachings of the Quran and Hadith, as well as the traditional social system that was not in accordance with Islamic rules, such as in the case of inheritance and communal land. He also brought a new spirit in his preaching with a focus on the spirit of Islamic struggle and unity, as well as criticism of the rigidity of tradition and the importance of education to open up people's perspectives.
