Abstract

Writing is one of important skill in English subject beside the other skills. To improve the students’ writing skill, we have to know what strategy is the most suitable for the students’. This research used Classroom Action Research. The research was on two cycles with total meetings were seven; three meetings were for tests, and four meetings were for treatment. Each cycle covered the step of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The population of this research was the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Pandu Nusantara in the academic year of 2018/2019 which consisted of 30 students. The average score of pretest was 45. After the implementation of brainswriting strategy in every cycle, the students’ writing skill score were getting better. It can be seen from the research of students’ average score Cycle 1 was 50 and Cycle was 71. It can be concluded that brainswriting strategy can improve students’ writing skill and improve writing classroom into a better situation.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the type of deixis on the main character in the film titled I Leave My Heart in Lebanon. This research is descriptive qualitative research.The data of this research was collected by analysis of the use of language spoken by the main character in the film I Leave My Heart in Lebanon, with the stages: 1) Organizing the data by collects of all the data in the movie that contains of deixis. 2) Categorizing the data into the types based on levinson theory who classified deixis into deixis persona, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social. 3) Analyzing the data which containing five types of deixis. 4) Present the sample of the data that related to the study, the researcher will present the result of the research some of each category. All of the sources taken on the Film I Leave My Heart in Lebanon. Based on data analysis, the researcher found 125 data that indicates the type of deixis. including personal, temporal, spatial, social, and discourse deixis. The deixis in this film are dominated by personal deixis with 102 data.

Abstract

The purpose of this research, namely analyzing  Aisyah : biarkan kami bersaudara movie to find out the type of addressing term used in this movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative method taken from the dialogue spoken by the characters in Aisyah : biarkan kami bersaudara movie. In this movie five addressing terms are found, namely the addressing term using name, addressing term using kinship name, addressing term using intimacy name, addressing term using respect name, and addressing term Using mockery name. Abstract

This research reports the findings of an investment study deixis in an article selected from DetikNews. The aims of this research was to determine the deictic expression contained in the selected article. The methodology used by the researchers is descriptive qualitative and uses content analysis to analyze deictic expressions in the article. These findings of research indicate are three types of deictic expressions found in articles selected from DetikNews, there are personal deixsis, spatial deixis and temporal deixis. Based on the results of the research, it can be found that knowing the deictic expression in the selected article, this will help all those who read the article, will have a better understanding and the points of the article will reach the audience. Keywords: Deixis , DetikNews

Abstract

Individuals use language as a means of communication everywhere and at all times. In today's world, figurative language is often encountered in everyday life, such as in song lyrics. Figurative language is a way of describing something without saying it directly. This research aims to investigate the figurative languages found in the lyrics of the song "Grenade" by analyzing their context and attempting to decipher their meaning. The data tool is song lyrics found on the internet, and the research approach is descriptive qualitative analysis. The results revealed that this album employs figurative language such as metaphor, hyperbole, and repetition. Furthermore, the most figurative words used in the lyrics is hyperbole. Each figurative language's contextual sense is often clarified in relation to the lyric's situation. Keywords: Figurative Language, Song lyrics, Contextual Meaning

Abstract

Descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. This study aimed to investigate nouns and the variety of nouns found in a song entitled Lost in Japan by Shawn Mendes. In collecting the data, the researchers applied three steps, namely selecting one song to be examined, read and elaborate the song lyrics to discover nouns, and classify nouns based on the types. Based on the data analysis, the researchers discovered 16 nouns with seven types of nouns. All nouns can be indicated to more than one type. The results are summarized as follows; 15 common nouns, 1 proper noun, 11 abstract nouns, 5 concrete nouns, 12 countable nouns, 4 uncountable nouns, and 4 compound nouns. Keywords:  Noun, Song lyrics, Types of noun

Abstract

Speaking is an ability that is considered quite important in learning English. The oral presentation is one activity that can be used in learning English to improve students' speaking skills. This study aims to examine the oral presentations conducted by students with the intention that students can improve their speaking also seeks to determine what obstacles students experience when making oral presentations. The researcher applied qualitative research as a research method to collect the data the researcher used observation and field notes as instruments. The data obtained were categorized and analyzed based on several related theories. Regarding the result, it was found that basically, students have a positive response to the implementation of oral presentation. Student perceives that it helps them to evaluate their ability to speak English, increasing motivation, as well as allowing them to think critically in the use of language. Although several aspects must be developed such as student pronunciation. This finding indicates that oral presentations are useful for improving students speaking skills. Keywords:  Oral Presentation, Speaking Skill

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the level of student anxiety with the performance of students speaking in front of the class. This research used a quantitative method in the correlation model. The population in this study was Junior High School, and the sample used for this study was grade 9 students with a total of 32 students. The instruments used are questionnaires and tests. The collected data, both questionnaire scores and speaking test scores, were then analyzed through SPSS. The results of the data significance analysis were 0.990. Hypothesis attempts to explain N.Sig > 5% and for these effects, the null hypothesis in this observation is accepted. This issue suggests that students' anxiety and speaking performance in front of the class are not correlated. It could be concluded that, there is no correlation between student anxiety and students' speaking performance. Based totally on these outcomes, the strength of this correlation is moderate. From the outcomes of this observation, it could be stated that language anxiety hurts students' speaking performance. Consequently, students with low anxiety have a good speaking rating, and students with high anxiety may have a low speaking rating.

Abstract

The study aims to explore the challenges faced by the tenth-grade students in learning to write a recount text through discovery learning using short video. The study used a descriptive qualitative method approach. Hence, the researcher collected the data by using interviews, observations, and document analysis. And then, the participants who participated in this study were 17 students of a senior high school located in Bandung. After gathering the data, the researcher then analyzed and coded them to make interpretations about the findings. The result revealed that the challenges faced by the students in creating a recount text include limited English proficiency. Additionally, it is recommended for further research to explore other areas like factors that may influence the effectiveness of using discovery learning through short videos in teaching writing recount text.
