Abstract

Manggarai's Teing Hang rites provide as a live medium for the internalization and expression of ancestral proverbs that govern social values and collective behaviours. The purpose of this study is to uncover the significance of the proverbs used in the Teing Hang ritual and to comprehend how the Manggarai community internalizes these expressions. Data were gathered utilizing a qualitative method incorporating elders, cultural experts, and the younger generation through in-depth interviews and interactive observations. Thematic data analysis was used to identify and comprehend the meaning by utilizing semiotic and pragmatic theories. The data triangulation procedure was also utilized to strengthen the validity and reliability of the research findings. The findings demonstrate that Teing Hang proverbs serve as a tool for ritual communication as well as having deep symbolic connotations that enhance the community's social, spiritual, and cultural relations. Learning to live with these local expressions offers a window into the difficulties the younger generation has upholding traditional norms in the face of globalization. By incorporating local culture into teaching and learning instruction, these findings are expected to contribute to the development of understanding about the importance of preserving culture and language in the modern era.

Abstract

Catechesis, as a contextual faith education, in Indonesia is realized through the Catechesis of the Ummah, which emphasizes social analysis in the light of faith with a practical hermeneutic approach. This approach directs faith education to the act of liberation from injustice. Although successful in involving the people in society, this approach tends to be pragmatic and does not pay attention to the transcendental dimension of faith, namely communion with God. This study aims to evaluate practical hermeneutic approaches in the Catechesis of the Ummah in Indonesia, identify its impact on the appreciation of faith, and offer a more balanced hermeneutic alternative. Through literature review and qualitative content analysis of Church documents, academic works, and pastoral experiences, the research found the dominance of practical hermeneutics, the tendency of the Bible as a moral guide, the lack of faith transformation, and ideally the Ecclesiastical Base Community (KBG) as a forum for catechesis. In conclusion, in order to guarantee a balance of practical and transcendental dimensions, practical hermeneutics needs to be combined with post-hermeneutics. Post-hermeneutics emphasizes the role of the Word of God as a divine revelation that leads to the transformation of life and encourages a personal encounter with Christ, the primary goal of faith education.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital catechesis, especially in dioceses with limited access to in-person faith formation. This study explores the effectiveness of interactive pedagogy within digital catechesis in the Diocese of Ruteng-Flores-NTT during the post-COVID-19 new normal. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were gathered from structured interviews with catechists, clergy, and young Catholics, as well as participant observation of Zoom sessions, WhatsApp discussions, and YouTube content. The findings reveal that interactive digital methods—particularly Zoom-based catechesis—promoted higher engagement, dialogue, and deeper faith reflection, especially among youth. However, structural challenges such as poor internet connectivity and lack of catechist training limited full participation. The study highlights the importance of symbolic language, participatory learning methods, and enhanced digital competencies for catechists. These insights contribute to future strategies for effective and context-sensitive digital catechesis.
