Abstract

This paper reports a study of teacher’s attitude on reflective practice-based instruction in teaching English in Indonesian EFL classroom. Teachers are urged to feel reactive and open minded as the prerequisite for being reflective teachers. It is also crucial to EFL teachers due to they are required to teach students about course content and language development. Thus, reflective teaching-based instruction comes as a catalyst of teachers’ professional performance in teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). The study employs a descriptive qualitative study utilizing questionnaire and in-depth interview, taking three teachers as the participant of the study selected through conveniently sampling technique. Then, thematic analysis was used to analyse the findings of data. The result of the study demonstrates that there were marked differences in the way the teachers perceive reflective practice based instruction in their classroom teaching practices. The differences fall into three categories: (1) highly adjusted of reflective practice (HARP), (2) moderately adjusted of reflective practice (MARP), and (3) poorly adjusted of reflective practice (PARP).This study can be beneficial input to enhance understanding and practice of the use of reflective practice-based instruction in EFL classroom, especially in Indonesian context.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the level of student anxiety in speaking English, the factors that cause student anxiety in speaking English, as well as strategies for overcoming student anxiety in speaking English. This research uses a mixed methods research type. Students of SMA Negeri 3 Makassar were chosen as research subjects. Data were collected through the FLCAS survey by Horwitz (1986) and semi-structured interviews. From the findings that will occur it can be concluded that (1) The researcher found that the average level of student anxiety in English was at a moderate anxiety level with a percentage of 42% (2) then the researcher also found that several factors of student anxiety were influenced by Communicative Anxiety, test anxiety and Fear of Negative Evaluation. (3) students' strategies for overcoming their anxiety in speaking English are Preparation, Relaxation, and Positive Thinking.

Abstract

This study in form of qualitative research by using narrative inquiry as a approach  in collecting data, that aim to find out (a) students’ perception  the way their teacher in teaching English using whatsapp, (b) students perception the learning English using whatsapp, (c) students challenges in learning English using whatsapp, and (d) students strategy to overcome their challenges in learning English using whatsapp. The participants of this research consisted of four students in the first grade of X MIA 2 in SMA N 1 Mamasa in 2020/2021 academic year. The instrument in collecting data was interview. The result of the interview analized by using three process, they are data reduction, data display and withdrawal/verification of conclusion. The results show that the students perception of the way their teacher in teaching English using whatsapp were making learning video, giving assignment, reviewing material, unsatisfying explanation, making q and a section, quite good explanation and initiative giving students time to ask. Students’ perception of learning English using whatsapp were Positive and negative perception. Students’s challenges in learning English using whatsapp were bad connection of network, must have internet quota, should have proper phone, not clearly understand, afraid to ask a question to teacher, inappropriate between material and  , phones’ storage is limited, and whatsapp is disorganized. Students’ strategy to overcome their challenges in learning English using whatsapp deleted unneeded files, giving star icon to files, arranging schedule, creating own whatsapp group, back up files, making and commitment for self.
