Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of adding natural antioxidants from ethanolic extract of mango parasite (Dendrophthoe petandra) to oxidation stability of crude palm oil (CPO) during storage. The parameters tested were levels of free fatty acid (FFA), acid values, and deterioration of bleachability index (DOBI). The antioxidant activity of D. petandra extract obtained was IC50 of 6.369 ppm. Concentrations of D. petandra extract range from 200 to 1000 ppm. Based on the results, the ethanolic extract of D. petandra was able to reduce the FFA and acid value and increase the DOBI compared to the negative control. The lowest FFA levels and acid numbers were obtained from samples with addition of 1000 ppm natural antioxidants with FFA of 4.2% and acid value of 7.4 mg KOH/g, while the DOBI value increased to 1.300.

Abstract

Boron analysis by UV-Vis spectrophotometry has been developed through distilling triethoxy borane into the curcumin solution. In the distillation of ester borane, an esterification reaction occurs between borate and ethanol. Validation of isothermal distillation methods by UV-Vis spectrometry needs to be done to obtain specific, accurate, and reproducible results. The distillation for 24 hours at 25°C gave the optimum result. UV-Vis spectrophotometry wavelength was 535 nm. The standard curve was linear in the concentration range of 1-5 ppm (R2 = 0.9995) with a sensitivity of 0.0902 ppm-1, a limit of detection of 0.002±0.001 ppm, the limit of quantification of 0.006±0.001 ppm, and percent recovery of 88%.

Abstract

Research on qualitative test of secondary metabolites compounds and test of lowering cholesterol activity has been done on bidara leaves (ziziphus mauritiana) with methanol extract by maceration methods. The aim of this research was to determine cholesterol-lowering activity of methanol extract on bidara leaves (ziziphus mauritiana). The procedure used was in this study consisted of extraction, phytochemicals screening such as alkaloids, tannins, triterpenoids, flavonoids and saponins, and test of cholesterol lowering activity using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 423 nm. Based on research results, determine cholesterol lowering activity of methanol extract on bidara leaves (ziziphus mauritiana) has proven to reduce cholesterol levels by 80.4598% because of bidara leaves contains of active secondary metabolites such as triterpenoids, tannins and flavanoids.

Abstract

Tobacco leaves have great potential as corrosion inhibitors due to the chemical compounds present in tobacco leaf extracts that play a role in inhibiting the corrosion rate, specifically tannins. The objective of this study was to determine the corrosion rate value and efficiency of tobacco leaf extract as an inhibitor on corrosion coupons exposed to a sulfuric acid solution. The initial step involves preparing smooth corrosion coupons and tobacco leaves. The tobacco leaves were prepared by extracting them through a maceration method using ethanol solvent over a 5-day period. A corrosive media solution of 1 M H2SO4 and corrosion coupons measuring 0.1 x 1.3 x 7.65 cm were also prepared. Subsequently, both the corrosion coupons and tobacco leaf extract were soaked in an acidic solution for the initial sample. The highest tannin content was found in the tobacco leaf extract using ethanol solvent (in a ratio of 1:6), yielding 31.35%. At the highest concentration of 800 ppm, the corrosion rate of the tobacco leaf extract was measured at 17.36 mm/year. Additionally, the inhibition efficiency of the tobacco leaf extract in the corrosive medium, a 1 M H2SO4 solution, reached 89.82% at a concentration of 800 ppm, with a soaking time of 5 days.
