Abstract

The content of active compounds in methanol extract of kesambi stem bark (Scheleicera oleosa) is known to have good antioxidant activity. Methanol extract of kesambi stem bark contain flavonoid and fenolic compounds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methanol extract of kesambi in inhibiting the oxidation of crude palm oil (CPO). In this study, the extraction of kesambi stem bark was carried out with methanol solvent. Antioxidant activity test of methanol extract of kesambi using the DPPH method. The parameters observed were free fatty acids (FFA) values, acids value, and DOBI (Deterioration of Bleachability Index). The used concentration of natural antioxidant were 200; 400; 600; 800 and 1000 ppm. Based on the results of this study, the natural antioxidant of methanol extract of Kesambi stem bark (Schleichera oleosa) can reduce levels of free fatty acid numbers, acid value, and DOBI value. Actioxidant activity methanol extract of kesambi stem bark shown IC50 42.092 ppm. The lowest FFA levels and acid numbers were obtained from samples with addition of 1000 ppm natural antioxidants with free fatty acid (4.1%), acid value (7.7 mg KOH/g) while the DOBI value increased to 1.331. Furthermore, FFA value meets the CPO quality standard, according to SNI-01-2901-2006. Keywords: Crude palm oil, antioxidant, free fatty acid (FFA), acid value

Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of adding natural antioxidants from ethanolic extract of mango parasite (Dendrophthoe petandra) to oxidation stability of crude palm oil (CPO) during storage. The parameters tested were levels of free fatty acid (FFA), acid values, and deterioration of bleachability index (DOBI). The antioxidant activity of D. petandra extract obtained was IC50 of 6.369 ppm. Concentrations of D. petandra extract range from 200 to 1000 ppm. Based on the results, the ethanolic extract of D. petandra was able to reduce the FFA and acid value and increase the DOBI compared to the negative control. The lowest FFA levels and acid numbers were obtained from samples with addition of 1000 ppm natural antioxidants with FFA of 4.2% and acid value of 7.4 mg KOH/g, while the DOBI value increased to 1.300.

Abstract

Boron analysis by UV-Vis spectrophotometry has been developed through distilling triethoxy borane into the curcumin solution. In the distillation of ester borane, an esterification reaction occurs between borate and ethanol. Validation of isothermal distillation methods by UV-Vis spectrometry needs to be done to obtain specific, accurate, and reproducible results. The distillation for 24 hours at 25°C gave the optimum result. UV-Vis spectrophotometry wavelength was 535 nm. The standard curve was linear in the concentration range of 1-5 ppm (R2 = 0.9995) with a sensitivity of 0.0902 ppm-1, a limit of detection of 0.002±0.001 ppm, the limit of quantification of 0.006±0.001 ppm, and percent recovery of 88%.

Abstract

Plastic waste is a major environmental problem due to its widespread presence and lack of economic value. Pyrolysis is a process that can decompose plastic waste and produce methane gas, liquid, and solid products. This study aimed to investigate the factors that affect methane gas production and the amount of methane gas produced during the pyrolysis of various plastics, including a black plastic bag and plastic with aluminium foil. The results showed that the aluminium foil plastic produced more methane gas than the black bag, with optimal gas content at 7.74% for the aluminium foil plastic and 3.48% for the black bag. The type of plastic, time, and temperature all significantly affected the yield of methane gas produced. In addition, the interaction between variables in plastic type, time and temperature greatly affects the yield of methane gas (CH4) obtained, because the type of plastic F count (2904) is higher than F table 0.05 (4.00), at temperature F count (5449) is greater than F table 0.05 (2.76), when F count (746) is greater than F table 0.05 (2.76). In conclusion, the snack foil produced more methane gas than the black bag because it was made of low-density polyethylene and contained aluminium ions that catalysed the decomposition of the material, resulting in an increase in the amount of methane gas produced. Keywords: Methane gas; Pyrolysis; Plastic; Waste

Abstract

Abstract

Tobacco leaves have great potential as corrosion inhibitors due to the chemical compounds present in tobacco leaf extracts that play a role in inhibiting the corrosion rate, specifically tannins. The objective of this study was to determine the corrosion rate value and efficiency of tobacco leaf extract as an inhibitor on corrosion coupons exposed to a sulfuric acid solution. The initial step involves preparing smooth corrosion coupons and tobacco leaves. The tobacco leaves were prepared by extracting them through a maceration method using ethanol solvent over a 5-day period. A corrosive media solution of 1 M H2SO4 and corrosion coupons measuring 0.1 x 1.3 x 7.65 cm were also prepared. Subsequently, both the corrosion coupons and tobacco leaf extract were soaked in an acidic solution for the initial sample. The highest tannin content was found in the tobacco leaf extract using ethanol solvent (in a ratio of 1:6), yielding 31.35%. At the highest concentration of 800 ppm, the corrosion rate of the tobacco leaf extract was measured at 17.36 mm/year. Additionally, the inhibition efficiency of the tobacco leaf extract in the corrosive medium, a 1 M H2SO4 solution, reached 89.82% at a concentration of 800 ppm, with a soaking time of 5 days.
