Abstract

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), global coffee consumption reached 166.35 million 60-kg bags during the 2020–2021 period. Indonesia ranked fifth among coffee-consuming countries, with an estimated consumption of 5 million 60-kg bags. The caffeine content in coffee can have physiological effects such as increased blood pressure and sleep disturbances, which can lead to insomnia. However, research on the effect of coffee consumption on blood pressure and insomnia has shown mixed results. This study aimed to determine the effect of coffee consumption on blood pressure and insomnia in 2ND Semester Nursing students at Yatsi Madani University. This study used a quantitative method with a descriptive correlation design and a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 143 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using a coffee consumption questionnaire, blood pressure measurements using a digital sphygmomanometer, and an insomnia questionnaire. Data analysis used the Spearman Rank test followed by Hierarchical Loglinear Analysis. Bivariate analysis showed no effect of coffee consumption on blood pressure with a p-value of 0.360 (p > 0.05), while coffee consumption did affect insomnia with a p-value of 0.007 (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed no significant effect of coffee consumption on blood pressure (partial chi-square = 1.357; p = 0.852), but a significant effect on insomnia (partial chi-square = 8.576; p = 0.014). Coffee consumption does not affect blood pressure but does affect insomnia in second-semester nursing students at Yatsi Madani University. Future research is suggested to include other relevant variables (such as stress levels, smoking habits, and physical activity) and to expand the scope to a broader group of respondents.
