Abstract

Hydrogel wound dressings were developed through cross-linking reactions of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with glutaraldehyde and by the addition of diclofenac sodium and rutin as anti-inflammatory agents. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were added to improve mechanically and release properties. CNC was isolated from pineapple leaf fibers through the ammonium persulfate method resulting in a mixture of rod-like whisker and spherical morphology. The mechanical properties of hydrogels are increasing with the addition of CNC. Hydrogels containing 8% CNC exhibited 7.266 N/mm2 tensile strength, 156.3% maximum strain, and 700.3 N/mm2 elastic modulus. Drug release tests containing sodium diclofenac were done by taking incubated phosphate buffer saline samples in a pH 7.4 environment and showed that all CNC variations tested are controllable for the first 30 min compared to the sample without CNC. Sodium diclofenac is easily eluted from hydrogel due to its polar properties, and all samples almost demonstrated the same release profile. PVA hydrogels showed fluctuating concentrations of diclofenac compared to others. While hydrogels containing rutin showed a controlled release mode, the addition of CNC in PVA resulted in a slower release of rutin, possibly due to the better binding between CNC and rutin. To conclude, CNC has successfully improved the performance of PVA hydrogels, including the drug release properties.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional issue that hampers children's growth, characterized by height below the standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The primary cause is prolonged malnutrition, especially during the first 1,000 days of life—from pregnancy until the child turns two. In Indonesia, stunting has become a national priority due to its long-term impact on human resource quality and the country’s future. According to the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI), national stunting prevalence stands at 21.6%, while West Java reports 20.2%. In Bandung Regency, including Dayeuhkolot area, stunted children are still found, often due to inadequate monitoring during pregnancy and low maternal awareness about nutritional health. Efforts to reduce stunting should not focus only on toddlers but also prioritize early prevention during pregnancy. Maternal health—encompassing nutritional status, blood pressure, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC)—plays a crucial role in determining the risk of delivering low birth weight (LBW) babies, a major stunting risk factor. However, many pregnant women lack knowledge of how to use basic health measurement tools like MUAC tapes, weight scales, and blood pressure monitors. Through this community service program, the team will conduct health education and practical training sessions for pregnant women at Posyandu 08 Melati, Citeureup Village, Dayeuhkolot. The initiative aims to improve maternal health literacy, equip participants with skills to use health tools, and raise early detection awareness for stunting prevention. A participatory, community-based approach will be applied to ensure sustainable impact in line with the government’s national stunting reduction agenda.

Abstract

The increase in the elderly population in Indonesia raises concerns about fall accidents. Many mitigation strategies are available to reduce fall accidents among the elderly. Two main strategies have been widely explored, i.e., fall detection and impact reduction. Despite its disadvantages, fall detection devices remain useful and important for future research. In addition, it is also urgent to address the impact reduction method by providing cushioning to minimize the physical impact on the subject of the fall. This study proposes a wearable safety vest equipped with a pre-impact fall-detection system and an automatically inflating airbag to protect the wearer during a fall. The main contributions of this study are the design and implementation of a lightweight wearable airbag vest for elderly protection, the development of a machine-learning-based pre-impact fall detection, and a quantitative evaluation of impact reduction using accelerometer-based measurements. The proposed safety vest with airbag has been trained, validated, and tested, with the subject achieving fall detection accuracy beyond 90% and the airbag deployment delay of less than 1 second after detection. The experiment results also show that the use of the airbag could reduce the impact shock down to 40-50% based on the accelerometer measurements.
