Abstract

The characteristics of a building style and its character are shaped by some of its architectural elements. One of these architectural styles is an Art Deco-style building that has its own character. This style first appeared in 1925 and developed until 1940. This European architectural style was adopted in various American buildings due to their condition in the time of the industrial revolution. The modern architectural movement that developed at that time also influenced the art deco style and gave it a modern touch. The Art Deco style in graphic design restores again decorativism but not necessarily in the form of ornaments. Decorative impressions can be achieved through the play of elements geometric, typographic blocks, textures and shades of color. Art Deco style has characteristics that are very distinctive and easily distinguished from other architectural styles. Art deco still exists in the spirit of medan city development as place of research evidenced by the many old buildings that are repurposed as well as new buildings that take the characteristics of Art Deco. One of them is the use of tower elements or one part of the building that rises slightly upwards and gives a magnificent impression.

Abstract

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of stroke in Indonesia, particularly in Medan City, necessitates the development of healthcare facilities that not only focus on curative treatment but also support holistic recovery. However, existing hospital designs remain largely generic and have not specifically integrated the healing environment approach within stroke-specialized hospital typologies. In contrast, stroke patients require long-term rehabilitation and exhibit high sensitivity to environmental quality, demanding a more adaptive and user-centered design approach. This study aims to formulate an architectural design concept for a stroke-specialized hospital in Medan City through a healing environment approach. The method employed is qualitative-descriptive, involving literature review, precedent analysis, and synthesis of therapeutic design principles, including natural lighting, air quality, landscape integration, noise control, and spatial orientation. The novelty of this study lies in the specific integration of healing environment principles into stroke hospital design by considering neurological rehabilitation characteristics, patient mobility patterns, and environment-based recovery stages. The proposed design strategies emphasize the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, biophilic elements, and zoning arrangements that support both physical and psychological therapy. The results are expected to produce a design concept that enhances rehabilitation effectiveness passively by up to 30–40% through the optimization of a therapeutic environment
