Abstract

Noninvasive genetic sampling is the most reliable approach to collect endangered species which are typically rare and elusive. However, the approach is hampered by poor quality and quantity of DNA amount, and therefore, a pilot study is required. Our current short communication article reports the first noninvasive genetic sampling approach using feces of critically endangered Bawean deer (Axis kuhlii) to test the effect of aging on the amount of DNA extraction. Fecal samples of the Bawean deer were collected from the Bawean Deer Captive Unit in Sangkapura Village, Bawean Island, East Java. The samples were grouped into two different categories, namely: 1) New samples: for feces that had just been expelled for less than a day and 2) Old samples: for feces that were estimated to have been expelled for more than a day. There were 11 New samples and 16 Old samples. The samples were extracted using the QIAGEN Mini Stool Kit. The DNA quantification was carried out by using a fluorometer. The results of the extraction between the two categories were analyzed by the Kruskal Wallis test. The results showed that the mean rank value of the New samples was better (15.27) than the Old samples (13.13). The P value of the Kruskal Wallis test, however, was higher than the Asymp significant value, indicating that there was no meaningful differences (P = 0.49) between the two samples categories. The work described in this short communication article is a preliminary result and an important step in the study of Bawean deer population genetic.

Abstract

Oil palm has become an important export commodity for Indonesia and has been cultivated by both smallholders and large scale companies mainly as monoculture plantations. Research suggests that this massive monoculture practice has led to adverse impacts on natural and social systems. Smallholders encounter difficulties to cope with extreme climate events such as long dry seasons, fluctuating commodity price and long-term tenure insecurity. We argue that oil palm agroforestry (OPAF) could become a promising and realistic alternative to deal with these problems under social forestry (SF) program. To date, OPAF has been adopted by merely small number of smallholders in Indonesia in a limited scale. This article aims at analysing the barriers and factors which influence the decision of smallholders in adopting OPAF. We employ a hybrid method which combines qualitative and quantitative analysis. Binary logistic regression models were constructed to identify factors influencing OPAF adoption. Our findings suggest that education, having side job and relative location of smallholders’ have significantly influenced smallholders’ decision in adopting OPAF. Knowledge gaps especially on the yields and management of OPAF have likely led to low OPAF adoption.

Abstract

Urban forest development is one of the efforts in increasing the quantity of green open space while improving water catchment areas and preventing flooding. The selection of the right urban tree species will help optimize the function of the urban forest. The purpose of this study was to evaluating the tree species suitability in the development of Srengseng Urban Forest. Data collection was done through an inventory of all tree species in the urban forest. Literature studies were conducted to analyze the data, by considering the general criteria for urban tree and some specific criteria of tree species for urban forest with conservation purpose. Based on the suitability analyses, each tree species was grouped into three classes of criterion, i.e., appropriate, quite appropriate, and not appropriate. The results showed that among 53 tree species of 23 different families, 90.56% of the tree species were suitable for the development of the Srengseng Urban Forest.
