Abstract

This article begins with explaining the present problems of Acehnese cultural identity, then articulating how the art is usefully employed to solve those difficulties. Relying on post-colonial theories, I formulate the framework that Acehnese art has significant position to handling current cultural problem of Acehnese society. This work offers a cultural resolution of Acehnese present conflict between traditionalist and modernist Muslims, which are represented by Dayah and Muhammadiyah community in Aceh. It is commonly known that Islam is the pride of the Acehnese. To date, there is, however, no certainty about the nature of Islam in Aceh, as heated debate still exists between traditionalist and modernist Muslims upon the nature of Sharia application in the place. This dispute has generated different extreme perspectives upon seeing themselves in the way to treat their cultural identity. Here we establishes that Acehnese art plays great role in bringing togetherness to different groups of Acehnese society, which results in resolving horizontal conflict of Acehnese society. It shows that Acehnese art accommodates to all of different ness of Acehnese communities and, therefore, raises Acehnese collective consciousness.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the passive Islamophobia in the arts and culture subjects on the KTSP and K-13 curriculum of secondary schools. Employing the representation theory, this article explores the relationship between marginality and Islamophobia integrated into the fine arts curriculum. Through content analysis of 2 textbooks for grades VII and VIII, some elements of marginalization in the Islamic cultural values were found. The conception of Indonesian nationality originates from various internal solidarity and contestation between Islamism, Hinduism and secularism in resistance to imperialism. The fallacy in the narrative of the mainstream of Indonesian nationalism seen as deeply rooted in the legacy of Majapahit/Hinduism, which unwittingly calls Indonesia the new Majapahit needs to be straightened out. The construction of cultural nationalism, meanwhile, overrides Islamic culture and identity. This article indicates that the teaching of the nationality of Indonesian culture does not consider the heritage of Islamic arts and culture. The marginality and exclusion of Islamic arts and culture in the construction of Indonesian nationality through the art curriculum and art education policy shows passive Islamophobia internalized therein, instead of the existence of accommodation and respect for Islamic culture.

Abstract

As the earliest Muslims and first known who introduced Islam in Southeast Asia, Dayah community has continuingly played a great role in retaining and spreading the Ash`arite school of theology in the region. Ash`arite theology is a major area of interest within the field of Islamic studies in Southeast Asia. The teachings of Māturīdite kalam have, however, received little attention, in particular its impact on local theology from many scholars. Furthering the legacy of Nasafi’s construction of Southeast Asian theology, this paper is an attempt to unearth Māturīdi’s significance among Southeast Asian Muslims by analyzing the content of dayah’s curriculum, explaining the intellectual network of Māturīdite ulema, and explicating the role of Ahlu al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah consensus along with interviewing several key informants on the issues of Islamic theology. I craft this paper by arguing that Māturīdite kalam has considerable impacts on local theology, e.g., upholding rationality on God’s attributes, and relying on ilm mantiq method in justifying human freedom. This paper has great contributions in advancing the study of Southeast Asian Muslim theology and its relation to the concept of Islamisation of indigenous culture; like the concepts of cosmopolitanism and syncretism, and the finding of Māturīdi’s kalam in Southeast Asia.[Dayah di Aceh, institusi yang paling awal mengenalkan Islam di Asia Tenggara, hingga saat ini masih merupakan aktor yang berperan penting dalam mempertahankan dan menyebarkan mazhab Ash’ariyah di kawasan ini.

Abstract

Great scholars with great number of literature have previously discussed the legacy of the Islamic pilgrimage's role in spreading Islam as the Acehnese identity. However, few references extrapolate the role of Islamic pilgrimage as the mechanism of Acehnese identity formulation. Based on observation of the current site of Rumoh Aceh in Mecca, and extensive reading on Acehnese heritage, I argue that the Islamic pilgrimage (Hajj) played an extremely important role in developing Acehnese civilisation, as it might have worked as the mechanism of creating Acehnese identity among the Southeast Asian neighbours. This article concentrates on the pilgers' route of Malacca straits' role before the invention of steam machine and during the heyday of Acehnese civilisation. This works has significant contribution to raise the awareness of the fact that is believed to be the strong reason why the Acehnese civilisation has become the leading power at that time.

Abstract

Considerable studies have been undertaken on Islamic sects and radicalisation. There is, however, little work on textual analysis of traditionalist book, which is regarded as traditionalist collective identity.  This article is a critical analysis of the term Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah, with special reference to Sirajuddin Abbas’ book. ; I`tiqad Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah. His articulation of the concept Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah plays great role in radicalising traditionalist ideology and providing traditionalist Islamic activists the justification to go against Wahhabism. His interpretation of the concept is, however, strongly rejected by Wahhabis, because of imposing hatred and intolerance against Wahhabism. By using Fairlough’s critical analysis, I studied critically the content of Abbas’s book. Some concepts related to the articulation of Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah are chosen and analysed to find the role of the book in underlying traditionalist ideology. Then, Abbas’ interpretations of the selected concepts are verified through the method of interview to unearth ideological articulation of Abbas’.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i1.2405

Abstract

This article elucidates local theology, which encapsulates in the work of shari’a in Acehnese contexts. The argument of this article is grounded in the Acehnese historical epochs in which Acehnese cultural identity were formulated. I argue that Acehnese shari’a is the set of local rituals, beliefs and ideas as the production of local interpretation of Islam, which responds to local cultural identity. That version of Islam works as local theology, which embodies sacred and divine values and is perceived as local identity and ideology. Building on Tibi’s, Salim’s and Nuim’s argument on shari’a and Hall’s perspective on identity and ideology, I examine the work of shari’a in Acehnese historical times, and its relation to Acehnese culture and ideology. There are four indications that shari’a holds central role in formulating the Acehnese theology, where local cultural identity and ideology are seen as part of Islamic religiosity, namely the process of Islamization of Southeast Asia, the function of local Islamic traditional boarding education (dayah), the distribution of local power, and the work of local arts. Abstract

Studies on art education and culture are a continuing concern within academicians and politicians. Although extensive research has been carried out on the fields, few studies exist, which concern about the use of art education for cultural hegemony. This study concerns about Acehnese culture and identity. During the time of colonisation, imperialist scholar; Snouck Hurgronje had used cultural resources as the instrument to instil false cultural identity for the interest to take control over Aceh. Stepping on the Dutch’s colonialising policies, the central government of Indonesia has, as argued, used art curriculum as a hegemonic media for similar interests. This article discusses the case of art education in Acehnese by analysing the content of the text books recommended by the central government. This work is to demonstrate the representation of Acehnese cultural identity in the “Art and Culture” curriculum of schools in Aceh. I employ Freire, Hall, Apple, and Giroux thoughts to formulate the framework of this article. The aim of this paper is to understand the mechanism of the art curriculum used to nationalise local people and to uncover the scheme of cultural hegemony in Acehnese schools, Indonesia. This work significantly contributes toward understanding the relation between cultural hegemony and education.

Abstract

This article sheds light on thoughts of the Liberal Islam proponents concerning to the way they view about the Islamic law application in Aceh. In doing so, it explains the strategies that liberal Islam takes to disseminate their beliefs among Moslems and then how their positions are criticised among western thinkers in the post modern era. The second part of this work will elucidate their views on the Acehnese Sharia and the way their opinions are countered by traditionalists. Finally, this article will offer some possible solutions for dealing with the divergents of Islamic thought that leads to cultural conflict. The discussion will eventually bring the method of Freire’s conscientizacao as the way out from the cultural conflict.

Abstract

This study offers insights into the transformation of social media platforms as an alternative to the digital public sphere for Muslim society in Aceh. The communicative action theory by Habermas is used as approach to respond to this challenge. Descriptive quantitative analyses were used to expose religious discourse about Islam amongst young Muslims in Aceh. The results show that WhatsApp has proven to be the most popular among social media platforms. WhatsApp has functioned as a new public sphere for Muslim society in Aceh and has evolved into an essential part of mediated Islamic discourse in the digital era. In this regard, WhatsApp has created a universal public sphere, available to Muslim society as dialogic communication in Aceh. This research concludes that the Muslims in Aceh are not merely users of WhatsApp. They can also be digital preachers who can build individual narratives as a part of the religious struggle to increase their piety.
