Abstract

This study offers insights into the transformation of social media platforms as an alternative to the digital public sphere for Muslim society in Aceh. The communicative action theory by Habermas is used as approach to respond to this challenge. Descriptive quantitative analyses were used to expose religious discourse about Islam amongst young Muslims in Aceh. The results show that WhatsApp has proven to be the most popular among social media platforms. WhatsApp has functioned as a new public sphere for Muslim society in Aceh and has evolved into an essential part of mediated Islamic discourse in the digital era. In this regard, WhatsApp has created a universal public sphere, available to Muslim society as dialogic communication in Aceh. This research concludes that the Muslims in Aceh are not merely users of WhatsApp. They can also be digital preachers who can build individual narratives as a part of the religious struggle to increase their piety.

Abstract

On how digital public sphere distort traditional Islamic public sphere, many scholars are convinced that media's work is inextricably linked with producing false consciousness, in which its audiences' opinions are stirred and engineered for Ideological entrenchment. It is a consensus among scholars that media has the effectivity for the propaganda tools, while significant current media theories concern the role of media in favour of the power interest through the mechanism of algorigma; e.g., Echo chambers and filter bubbles. Based on netnographic data on Aswaja discourse, this paper attempts to unearth the dislocation of Islamic scientific tradition through digital public sphere. This paper argues that digital public sphere has played a significant role in disrupted the traditional Islamic scholarly tradition by instrumentalizing religious discourse to maintain hegemony over minority groups. This paper has an important contribution to understanding the mode of piety and religious practices used for cultural hegemony and the ways media plays its role in constructing and remaking the meaning of religious concepts and piety.

Abstract

Considerable studies have been undertaken on Islamic sects and radicalisation. There is, however, little work on textual analysis of traditionalist book, which is regarded as traditionalist collective identity.  This article is a critical analysis of the term Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah, with special reference to Sirajuddin Abbas’ book. ; I`tiqad Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah. His articulation of the concept Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah plays great role in radicalising traditionalist ideology and providing traditionalist Islamic activists the justification to go against Wahhabism. His interpretation of the concept is, however, strongly rejected by Wahhabis, because of imposing hatred and intolerance against Wahhabism. By using Fairlough’s critical analysis, I studied critically the content of Abbas’s book. Some concepts related to the articulation of Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jama`ah are chosen and analysed to find the role of the book in underlying traditionalist ideology. Then, Abbas’ interpretations of the selected concepts are verified through the method of interview to unearth ideological articulation of Abbas’.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i1.2405

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to evaluate fatwa on the Wahhabite interpretation of the ambiguous verses in the Qur’an given in 2014. Classical Muslim scholars respected the intellectual freedom of the other theological schools as long as their interpretations did not attribute human characteristics to God. However, this intellectual tolerance is not demonstrated by the Ulama Council in Aceh, Indonesia today, which only accepts their interpretation of the Qur’an. Rival interpretations propagated by other ideological groups, such as the Wahhabites, are ruled as blasphemous and deserve public outcries of condemnation. It seems that the Ulama Council in Aceh has instrumentalized the Shari‘a to suppress any ideas that are not in line with the Ash‘arite creed, even though there are other legitimate schools and approaches. Any group that promotes a different view is now liable to public condemnation.
