Abstract

Literature study shows that International students experience culture shock both to foreign cultures and to their own local cultures (reverse culture shock). Unfortunately, the study on resistance to reverse culture shock is rather neglected. This paper examines the students’ reverse culture shock in relation to cultural intelligence, the case of international students internship in Japan. The aim is to find out cultural intelligence, resistance to reverse culture shock, and the influence of cultural intelligence on resistance to reverse culture shock. The study uses quantitative methods with SEM-PLS statistical tests, and theoretical approaches to culture shock, reverse culture shock, and cultural intelligence. The results of the study are that international students participating in internships in Japan do not experience culture shock to Indonesian culture as a local culture. Generally, they have a good resistance to the reverse culture shock of their local culture. They do not feel a shock to Indonesian cultures as their local culture after coming back from Japan. They can resist to the reverse culture shock because they have a good cultural intelligence.  Cultural intelligence has a positive influence on the shock to local Indonesian culture. However, not all of them do not have cultural resistance with a 100% intelligence level. A small number experienced local culture shock (reverse culture shock), meaning that a small number of International students experience a slight shock to Indonesian culture.

Abstract

This research explores the differences in presupposition patterns in terms of conditions and usage similarities between Japanese and English. This paper uses comparative analysis, and the results show that there are some similarities and differences between Japanese and English conditional sentences. First, conditional clauses exist in both conditional Japanese and English sentences and these clauses have two parts: the ‘if-clause’ as the situation and the ‘main-clause’ as the result. Second, conditional sentences in both languages have similarities in that they express the possibilities and suppositions of the speakers. Third, conditional sentences in Japanese comprise と (-to), ば (-ba), なら (-nara), and たら (-tara) sentences. Fourth, there are three types of conditional sentences in English, namely the conditional that is true in the present/future tense, untrue in the present/future tense, and untrue in the past tense. Fifth, the conditional sentence in Japanese using -to, -ba, -tara, and -nara can all be used inherently in the predicate of the clause.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal Erwin Smith’s emotional intelligence seen in Shingeki no Kyojin manga. Erwin, the Commander of the Scout Legion, has the ambition and goodwill to protect the human race from the attack of Titans, giant monsters. Golemen’s theory of emotional intelligence was applied to examine Erwin’s ability to control his emotions and his understanding of the emotions of others. A qualitative method was utilized in this research. The data on Erwin’s emotional intelligence were obtained through observation and note-taking techniques. The results show Erwin’s dominant personality traits (ambitious, enthusiastic, and self-confident) contributed to his achievement on all components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Erwin’s emotional intelligence is well-accomplished due to those dominant personality traits, meanwhile his patience and kindness act as the controller and balancer.
