Abstract

Abstract

Sutan Nadal as the main character of this tale became the Prime Minister of Majapahit kingdom in Java. He was known as Gajah Mada. This is interesting to be studied since the origin of Gajah Mada has not been known yet. This Minangkabau classical tale, in Lévi-Strauss structuralism context, should not been put in controversy based on the history and reality. The story, which is believed by certain society and regarded as a true story, could be regarded as a tale by other societies. The sintagmatic relation—relation of characters with others in the story—shows paradigmatic relation—relation of the various characters in the same level. The analysis of the story also found two bundles of relations. They are a bundle of aristocracy relation and a bundle of government relation between Minangkabau and Majapahit kingdom. The analysis of the relation of the characters and bundles of relations reveal the surface structure which shows relations among elements that could be built based on the external characters or empirical characters of the relation, such as family stucture of each characters. The ‘Bujang Jauh’ tale contain the culture of Minangkabau culture which has been extinct. Based on the tale, it is known that a certain society has a whole social system in which all the members have the same tradition and language. Culture is not so simple which is happen instantly. Each society has different culture.

In practice, memes are also used as a means of patriarchal power legitimation through symbolic violence. Through the processing of language and images into symbols, memes are thought to be a tool of men's legitimacy. This article discusses several forms of content of harassment against women in the form of internet memes. First, the memes are analyzed by grasping the meaning of the symbols in them using semiotics' theory. Then, using Pierre Bourdieu's symbolic violence theory: habitus, capital, arenas, and symbolic violence, memes are analyzed to find the factors that cause the appearance of memes with the content of harassment against women. The results indicate that stereotype, gender bias, and mental structure are habitus structure which plays an essential role so that symbolic violence becomes natural for its victims. The internet, as an arena, has become the initial capital for men to dominate. Also, naming and mentioning are forms of symbolic violence against women by forming certain boundaries and categories.

Abstract

Japanese customs in practicing work ethics and upholding the principles of life are outstanding. These outstanding values were due in part to the instilled at an early age. A simple children’s story entitled Kingyo no Otsukai can be used as educational material for children because it portrays the value of Japanese work ethics. The research method applied was a descriptive qualitative method. Art and culture underlie the appreciation of literary work. Literary work is useless if it cannot interpret the goals carried out by the author. Kingyo no Otsukai contributes to children through the values of Japanese work ethics, namely bushido, makoto and ganbatte, also keishan. The connection among these three work ethics is the principle of bushido with optimism in doing everything, plus the spirit of ganbatte (never give up), supported by makoto (honesty and sincerity) to improve one’s abilities with creativity, productivity and innovation (Keishan). The embodiments of the Koinobori celebration in Japanese society are the three goldfish (the Red, the White, and the Striped) in the story. Japanese families with sons will celebrate every May 5th wishing the child success and progress. It is the task of parents or teachers to transfer the value of the work ethics obtained from children’s stories to children.
