Abstract

Writing skill in English is a productive skill that involves several components such as topic, ideas, main ideas, supporting ideas, sentence structure, grammar, diction, and writing technique. University students must be able to compose well-structured and elaborated academic writing. They are urged to create credible writings in the academic field and one of the strategies that can be used is the PLEASE strategy. PLEASE strategy is a writing strategy that has six steps namely: Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End. Therefore, this research aims to find the effect of the PLEASE strategy to improve English writing skills of the university of students in semester 4 at the English Department, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities University of Ibrahimy Situbondo. The findings of this research were drawn by using Z-test. It shows that the PLEASE strategy can significantly improve students’ writing skills. PLEASE strategy can help students to think systematically and critically using all those 6 steps.

Abstract

Pronunciation was one of difficult skill, it made many people confused. This research aimed to determine a solution by using mind mapping phonetic symbol media to eliminate the confusion of pronunciation. The content of mind mapping showed the part of phonetic symbol to study the sound of words. It has helped the understanding of some difference sounds. This research used quantitative true-experimental method by pre-posttest control group design. The tests carried out are validity, reliability, descriptive analysis, and t-test. Subject of this research is 30, it was divided 15 students for experiment group and 15 control group. The sample was taken by using random sampling and applied Slovin formula. While, the data was obtained by using reading test. The value of descriptive analysis there was a raising value which can be seen from mean post-test experiment group 72 it was higher than control group 36.6. And also, the quarrel of normal gain between experiment group and control group showed 75%>28.57%, 3 students from experiment group than a student of control group. Furthermore, the value of t-test was there was an influence to eliminate the confusion of pronunciation by using mind mapping phonetic symbol, it can be seen from the trials that have been tested in SPSS obtaining a t-count value of 8,290 > 1,7, it can be said that H0 is rejected and Ha accepted which it means that There is an influence of mind mapping phonetic symbol media (X) to eliminate the confusion of pronunciation (Y).

Abstract

English children's storybooks are real sources for children's language acquisition. A student's preference for reading books is determined by their teachers, who should be able to convey English subjects via a variety of media, including children's storybooks. The majority of English teachers in elementary schools are graduates of the English Education Study Program (EESP) who have completed the Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) subject. Thus, this study aims to implement an online learning application known as storyweaver.org.in in Teaching English Young Learners (TEYL) subject for EESP who are teachers want-to-be in the future. The qualitative method is employed here. Overall, the findings showed that planning, implementing, and evaluating can be three stages in using storyweaver.org.in in a classroom. Creating and using storybooks occurred to improve Foreign Language skills and cultural customs for young learners who find that storybooks are simple and pleasing methods to learn their culture.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the implementation of role play to improve students’ speaking skill in the grade VIII MTs Al-Ittihad Ketupat Ra’as Sumenep. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of two cycles, each cycle included planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The cycle was stopped when the indicators of success had achieved the completeness of learning set by the school. Completeness of learning for grade VIII subjects is 75%. The results showed students’ increase in the grade VIII MTs Al-Ittihad Ketupat Ra’as Sumenep learning outcomes in each cycle. The increase in learning outcomes was shown in the pre-test results with the percentage of completeness of learning 4,55% and there was an increase in the results of the post-test cycle 1 to 31,82%, and an increase again in the results of the post test cycle 2 to 81,82%. The increase in learning outcomes from the results of the pre-test, post-test cycle I to post-test cycle II was due to improvements in the application of role play after evaluating the learning process activities and learning outcomes. From the results of observations in the learning process of students’ speaking skill in the grade VIII MTs Al-Ittihad Ketupat Ra’as Sumenep, the students showed a good response. It could be concluded that learning using role play strategy in the grade VIII MTs Al-Ittihad Ketupat Ra’as Sumenep could improve the student’s speaking skill.

Abstract

The study was aimed for finding out whether there was a significant correlation between students' habit in listening a song and students’ mastering a vocabulary or not. The research was conducted at the first grade in SMP 11 Ma'arif Bangsalsari Jember. This research useda correlation method, and there were two research variables, students’ habit in listening a song as variable X and students’ mastering a vocabulary as variable Y. The researcher useda random sampling technique. In this research, the researcher gave a test to the students. The result of test showed that the level correlation between a students’ habit in listening a song and mastering a vocabulary was high with sig 0,000 and r count 0,696. It showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ habit in listening a song and students’ mastering a vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to elucidate how SMPN 3 Asembagus class VIII students could benefit from problem-based learning interactions in order to improve their speaking skills in 2023–2024. This study used classroom action research (CAR) as its research approach. They have an extremely small vocabulary, which makes it difficult for them to speak English. As a result, students require an additional teaching strategy known as problem-based learning (PBL) to develop their speaking skills. The objective of this research was to determine how to use problem-based learning as a teaching strategy to improve the speaking skills of students and their academic achievement. The action research was carried out in some manner. These procedures included the pre-test, post-test, and the cycle that starts with planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Methods for gathering data include testing, documentation, and observation. This method was used in exams, in-class activities, observations, documentation, and student evaluations of both themselves and their peers. The study's findings indicated that there had been a quantitative improvement in the students' speaking skills. Additionally, students engaged more fully in the oral instruction and learning process. In summary, the eighth grade students in SMPN 3 Asembagus were able to speak English more fluently and effectively thanks to the great and efficient use of problem-based learning. As a result, the students' speaking skills improved, as is clear from the preceding result, and this strategy contributed favorably to the improvement of speaking skills. This approach is useful for making the process of teaching students to speak English more pleasurable.

Abstract

It was important to teach vocabulary to English young learners, since vocabulary is the starter to master language. However, it was more challenging to teach vocabulary to young learners compared to adult learners. Young learners have short attention span; thus, the teachers need to vary their learning media to make the students excited in learning the new language. One of the learning media that can be used is flashcard. Flashcard was one of media in teaching vocabulary that can help the students actively participate in the class. To find the effectiveness of flashcard, this study employed a pre-experimental research design with one group pre-test and post-test conducting 10 questions of multiple choice. Sampling technique used was total sampling, where all populations became the sample. The object of this research consisted of 36 children in the third grade of class G at MI Taqwa Bondowoso. The method used in this research was quantitative method design. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 21.0. The data showed the average score of pre tests was 65.00 and in post-test was 79.44. Furthermore, the result of t-test showed that the significant 2-tailed was 10.277. It could be concluded that there was significant effect in using a flashcard in teaching vocabulary to young learners.

Abstract

Reading was often considered as a passive skill, while in fact, reading requires the learners to actively read and understand the text by relating to their former knowledge. This pre-experimental study aimed to measure how effective Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) on students’ reading comprehension of of ELT department. TOEFL Reading Comprehension test was used as the instrument to collect the data from the pre-test and post-test score. The resulted of the non-parametric test of Wilcoxon test showed that there was no improvement after the CLT approach was implemented (the p-value is higher than 0.05 indicating that there was no significant effect). Some factors might determine the effectiveness include the student’s readiness in understanding English, and the inappropriate approach to teach reading skill that requires more on accuracy rather than fluency.
