Abstract

Working memory is used to process information of our mental representations and new knowledge. In learning English language, students are faced with various kinds of material and instruction that relate to the development of their knowledge and skills. However, extraneous information may overload their cognitive load and inhibit their knowledge and performances. Therefore, the theory of cognitive load effects provides a solution towards the overloading of cognitive capacity by introducing cognitive load effects. Cognitive load theory itself deals with the instructional design methods that use the limited cognitive capacity of learners.  There are three sources or types of cognitive load: the intrinsic load, extraneous load, and germane load. By analyzing an English textbook for class VIII secondary level in Indonesia designed by the Ministry of Education and Culture for distance learning in the Covid-19 pandemic era, this paper points out several cognitive load principles that create a better schema construction and automation that contribute to the decreased cognitive load.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the differing viewpoints of teachers and students regarding classroom participation, material delivery, teaching media, and assessment methods in the adaptive learning era. The study employs quantitative method, which involves the systematic collection and analysis of numerical data through statistical techniques. This study includes 10 teachers and 50 EFL undergraduate students from two universities in Indonesia, using a Likert scale questionnaire to collect data on various aspects of English language learning. The data were analysed using a t-test to find the mean, standards deviation, and p value of the responses in order to ascertained significant differences between the teachers and the students. The results reveal significant disparities between teachers' and students' perceptions across different dimensions of learning. While teachers prioritize delivery strategies and assessment methods, students focus more on delivery modes and traditional assessment types. However, both groups acknowledge the importance of autonomous learning and the effectiveness of diverse teaching media in enhancing engagement and motivation. The findings underscore the need for a balanced approach to learning that integrates both teacher preferences and student needs. Ultimately, understanding and addressing these discrepancies is essential for promoting meaningful and inclusive educational experiences in the adaptive learning era.

Abstract

The use of self-assessment and peer feedback in language learning has gained significant attention due to its potential to foster learner autonomy and improve academic outcomes. However, despite the growing interest, there is limited research on the integration of creative, visual methods, such as photovoice, into these practices, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of using photovoice as a tool for self-assessment and peer feedback, focusing on how this approach can promote self-reflection, critical thinking, and constructive peer interaction. Data was collected from a group of EFL students using a questionnaire, with responses analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that the majority of students feel confident in conducting self-assessment, though comfort with peer feedback is more varied, with some expressing uncertainty. Additionally, photovoice is perceived positively by students, who identify it as an effective means of enhancing reflective skills and self-expression. The study concludes that photovoice offers a promising approach to engaging students in self-assessment and peer feedback, making learning more interactive and reflective. The findings suggest that integrating visual methods into EFL classrooms can foster deeper learner engagement and support the development of evaluative judgment. Future research should investigate the broader applicability of photovoice in diverse EFL contexts and its impact on student autonomy and collaborative learning.
