Abstract

Trademarks are important for business establishments because they express the origin and quality of the companies, but it is not always easy to know and employ linguistic elements to craft good trademarks. Thus, to see the linguistic characteristics and strength of trademarks, the study has an objective to examine the trademarks of selected buffet restaurants at SM Mall of Asia, in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines. The data were taken from nine buffet restaurants. The analysis was done by referring to Shuy’s (2002) linguistic tools and Butters’ (2010) framework. The findings reveal that the linguistic characteristics mainly used by the buffet restaurants were lexicography, phonetics, morphology, and semantics. In terms of lexicography, most trademarks have their etymological meaning and historical development in the dictionaries, except Charaptor and Yakimix, which are coined words. In phonetics, the trademarks have phonetic characteristics of 1-3 syllables. Then the morphological analysis shows that the trademarks consist of noun phrases, affixation, and word formation (clipping). In semantics, five trademarks do not have synonyms and polysemy; three have synonyms, and two have polysemy. In terms of strength, the trademarks were classified from the weak to the strongest as follows: Buffet 101 (descriptive); Cabalen, La Fiesta, Oceana (suggestive); Four Seasons, Vikings (arbitrary); and Charaptor, GEN, Yakimix (fanciful). The findings imply that business owners need to create their companies’ trademarks in arbitrary or fanciful categories.

Abstract

Many studies examine metacognitive strategies in reading. But this study examines the metacognitive strategies employed by Year 12 students at SMAK Syuradikara Ende during extensive reading activities, with the aim of identifying the use of planning, monitoring, and evaluation strategies. This study employed a mixed-methods approach. It combined quantitative data from questionnaires with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. The research participants were 80 students. They were chosen purposively, namely, those who participated in extensive reading activities during classroom learning. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data, whilst the qualitative data were used to explore the students’ reading practices and experiences. The results of the study indicate that students applied metacognitive strategies in varying ways and with varying frequencies. Students frequently used the strategies of visualization, goal-setting, inferring meaning from context, and summarizing. The strategy of visualization was dominant. Contrariwise, two strategies were still used inconsistently: activating prior knowledge and identifying comprehension problems through self-questioning. These findings encourage educators to use metacognitive strategies in extensive reading to improve pupils’ performance and encourage them to overcome difficulties before, during, and after writing. Furthermore, research could investigate the factors influencing the use of these strategies.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Many preschool-aged and out-of-school children at TBM Plus Rumah Literasi Cakrawala NTT, Tanah Merah Village, Central Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, had not yet recognized alphabet letters, numbers 1–10, and basic colors due to limited cognitive stimulation and the lack of appropriate learning methods. This community service program aimed to improve the recognition of letters, numbers, and colors among 15 preschool-aged and out-of-school children. The program was implemented based on Lev Vygotsky’s Cognitive-Psychological Development Theory, particularly the concepts of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), collaboration, and social interaction-based learning. Activities included indoor and outdoor educational games, coloring letters and numbers, paper-hiding games, color recognition using English vocabulary, and songs introducing letters and numbers. The mentoring program was conducted gradually over four weeks. The findings showed that 90% of the participating children were able to recognize letters, numbers, and colors after completing the program. The community service program effectively enhanced children's recognition of letters, numbers, and colors. The results support the effectiveness of social interaction-based learning and scaffolding approaches as proposed by Vygotsky’s theory in improving early childhood cognitive development. Keywords: Preschool Children, Letters, Numbers, and Colors, Vygotsky, Educational Games.
