Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that hit almost all countries, especially in Indonesia, made many people anxious, stressed, and frustrated due to the uncertainty of various aspects of life. Stress is generally a normal condition and does not cause health problems. Aromatherapy balms with the main ingredients of essential oils can be used as an alternative to relax the body and play a role in emotional regulation. This community service is the transfer of knowledge and assistance in training on making aromatherapy balm. The activities included providing information on making balm, followed by a training demonstration on aromatherapy balm. The service activity, carried out on October 25, 2022, resulted in an aromatherapy balm product that was handmade by the present residents, accompanied by a team from UNS Pharmacy D3. This activity has achieved the desired target, namely the ability of the residents of Mojosongo Village to make a small-medium-scale product that has a high value both in terms of use and finances. This mentoring activity is the first step in establishing the independence of the local community to produce aromatherapy balm independently or in groups within the scope of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

Abstract

Paederia foetida Linn. is a rich source of active compounds, yet its antioxidant and cytotoxic properties remain poorly studied. This current research aimed to investigate the chemical profiles of a crude extract derived from P. foetida leaves, its fractionated substances, and their antioxidant and cytotoxic properties on MCF-7 cells, a breast carcinoma cell. Six fractionated substances have been separated in thin layer chromatography (TLC) plate. Five fractions showed antioxidant properties, as indicated by the formation of the yellowish band on the TLC plate after spraying with the DPPH reagent. Furthermore, crude extract of P. foetida leaves and its fractions are also characterized by antioxidant properties against 2, 2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals. F1 fraction exhibited the most potent antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 10.94±2.67 and 50.04±0.48 µg/ml, respectively, toward DPPH and ABTS radicals. Crude extract and all six fractions also varied in their cytotoxic properties against MCF-7 cells, with IC50 values ranging from 410.24±0.30 to 831.57±6.91 µg/ml. F3 fractions showed the strongest cytotoxicity (IC50 value: 410.24±0.30 µg/ml). Methanolic extract and active plant leaf fractions contained flavonoid and phenolic compounds, as measured by aluminum chloride and Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, respectively. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis showed that phenol, flavonoid, alkaloid, limonoid, and steroid were the major compound found in the crude extract and fractions. In conclusion, the present study proved that crude extract of P. foetida leaves and its fractionated substances were potential as antioxidant and cytotoxic agents.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a normal skin flora that can cause several skin diseases such as ulcers, acne, pneumonia, meningitis, and arthritis. Turmeric contains curcumin which has antibacterial activity. The addition of turmeric extract to the scrub formula can inhibit the activity of S. aureus. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of turmeric ethanol extract scrub preparations against S. aureus. The research was conducted experimentally in the laboratory. The extraction process is carried out by soxhletation. Antibacterial activity test was carried out using the scrub well method with various formulas of 1%; 3%; 5%, positive control, and negative control. The results showed that formula 3 with a concentration of 5% turmeric ethanol extract showed the highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus with an inhibition zone of 10.9 mm.

Abstract

Indonesia has a tropical climate, and it causes skin diseases such as acne. One of the bacteria causes acne is Staphylococcus aureus. Acne is caused by clogged skin pores so that oil secretion becomes clogged and then enlarges and dries. Antibacterial agents can be applied to the skin with the help of topical preparations, one of which is lotion. Lotion with kaffir lime leaf oil as the main ingredient contains high flavonoid compounds that have an antibacterial activity that can prevent acne, and chicken leg bone gelatin, contains collagen which can moisturize the skin. This research is experimental laboratory research. Lotion is made with different concentrations of kaffir lime leaf oil 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% w/v. The lotion was tested for physical (organoleptic, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesion, viscosity) and chemical (pH) properties. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by well diffusion method. The research data were processed using SPSS 21 with the Kruskal Wallis Test. The test results showed that the lotion preparation with the strongest antibacterial activity was the preparation with 1.5% kaffir lime leaf oil, with a yield of 11.26 mm. The more composition of kaffir lime leaf oil, the stronger the antibacterial inhibition. The more composition of kaffir lime leaf oil causes the viscosity to decrease, the pH to increase, the adhesive power to decrease, the dispersion power to increase, and the bacterial inhibitory power to increase.
